Mall Road is the main street in Shimla, the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, India. Constructed during British colonial rule, the Mall road is located a level below the ridge. The offices of municipal corporation, fire service, and police headquarters are located here. Automobiles, except emergency vehicles are not allowed on this road. For this reason, locals and tourists are often found strolling on this road in the evenings.
Mall road has a number of showrooms, department stores, shops, restaurants and cafes. A Himachal emporium that offers handicraft products of Himachal Pradesh like locally designed woolen clothes, branded clothes, pottery items, and jewellery is also located here

Reminiscent of colonial times, Shimla is a lovely hill station with its Victorian structures, ancient temples, stone churches and the ever so busy Mall Road. All of this, surrounded by the snow peaked Himalayas.
Established as the British summer capital in the year 1817, Shimla was a favourite with the Sahebs from the time of the Raj. You will find symbols of this era scattered all through the town in places like Annadale, the Viceregal Lodge and the glorious Georgian houses. Make a visit to The Gaiety Theatre that still holds performances or the state museum that displays ‘Company Paintings’ to really understand what we are talking about.
The Mall Road is the hub of all activity with a vibrant line up of shops and restaurants. Head to Lakkar Bazaar for a quintessential mountain bazaar experience.
If you find the main area a tad too commercialized, walk off just a little and you will be pleasantly surprised with charming little stone churches, gothic turrets and spires and beautiful wooden cottages. If you really want to get away from all chatter then Shimla also offers serene trekking routes and getaways at close distance such as Kasauli, Chail or Naldera.
Shimla offers awesome views of the snow topped mountains and on a clear day, you can spend hours staring at the peaks, changing colour as the day ends.
Toy Train
You will absolutely love the toy train that slowly goes up the mountains, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayan scenery.
The Mall
Meet the locals as they catch up over evening tea and gossip at ‘Scandal Point’. This is the indisputable hub of Shimla, bustling with restaurants, cafes and shops.
Shopping
You will enjoy some great local mountain shopping here. Pick up wooden wares at the Lakkar Bazaar, shawls, scarves and colourful socks from emporia at the Mall, or silver trinkets and miniature Buddhist paintings from Tibetan shops.
Viceregal Lodge
This lodge is a Baronial mansion, which is now a symbol of colonial Shimla, built in Elizabethan style.

Shimla City Tour Drive India - Kufri, Mall Road, Jakhu *HD*
Shimla, India: The video shows the popular tourist attractions of Shimla - Mall Road, Jakhu Temple, Kufri, Toy Train. It also captures the scenic panoramic beauty of the wonderful hill station by a drive through city towards Kufri route.
Shimla , Simla, is the capital city of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, located in northern India. Shimla acts as a hub for India's tourism sector.
In 1864, Shimla was officially designated the summer capital of British India, succeeding Murree, northeast of Rawalpindi. After independence, Lahore was given to Pakistan and Shimla became the capital of Punjab and was later the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
After reorganisation, the Mahasu district and its major portion was merged with Shimla. Its name is derived from the goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali. Shimla historically contained the 19 hill states of Baghal, Baghat, Balsan, Bashahr, Bhajji, Bija, Darkoti, Dhami, Jubal, Keonthal, Kumharsain, Kunihar, Kuthar, Mahlog, Mangal, Nalagarh (Hindur), Sangri and Tharoch.
Shimla is home to a number of colleges and research institutions as well as multiple temples and palaces. The city's buildings are styled in the Tudorbethan and neo-Gothic architectures dating from the colonial era.
Owing to its steep terrain, Shimla hosts the mountain biking race MTB Himalaya, which started in 2005 and is regarded as the biggest event of its kind in South Asia

Shimla (Hindi:शिमला)
Simla is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. It is a very popular holiday-retreat during the summer months and is well-known for its Victorian architecture, which is reflected in certain areas of the Mall and The Ridge. It is also a famous holiday spot for honeymoon.
There are quite a few theories regarding the origin of the word Shimla. Locals insist that the name originates from Shyamali Devi, a re-incarnation of the fearsome Goddess Kali.
Shimla has a population of around 145,000. Most of the residents are from the Pahadi community (the natives of Himachal Pradesh), but there is also a sizable minority from Punjab and Sindh, who moved to Shimla during the partition. As a result, the languages spoken in Shimla include Hindi, Punjabi, Pahadi and English which serves as a lingua-franca.
Shimla's cool climate is the precise reason why it is such a popular summer retreat. Located at an altitude of approximately 2200m above sea level, the region has a hilly terrain and is covered by dense evergreen forests. A few visitors choose to visit Shimla during spring or autumn, when the place is less crowded and the views are too spectacular for words.
By train :
The nearest broad gauge head is at Kalka - a four- to seven-hour journey from Delhi. After that, take the mountain train from Kalka to Shimla.
By Road :
It takes only 2 hours from Kalka to Shimla by taxi.
If hiring a private taxi, ensure that the driver has experience driving in hilly regions and is not deprived of sleep.
By plane :
Shimla has its own airport at a place known as Jubbarhatti (IATA code:SLV), 22 km away, a distance which, owing to the difficulties of the mountainous terrain, poor condition of road surfaces, and the increasing traffic congestion, often takes hours to traverse by car from Shimla. The airport has severe limitations imposed both by its elevation at 1,546 metres above sea level and by the shortness of its single runway (1,230 m) which ends in precipice at either end, and it can accommodate only turboprop Dornier aircraft; jets such as Airbus A310, 320s and Boeing 737s can all land at the larger Chandigarh (IATA code:IXC) airport. The Chandigarh Airport, located at a distance of 120 km from Shimla along far better roads and at an elevation of only 308 metres above sea level, offers far better flight options. Major airlines including Indian , Jet Airways and Air Deccan operate flights to Delhi, Jammu, and Mumbai. Most of the flights to Mumbai require a stop-over in Delhi. Tip, confirm the flights till the very last moment, bad weather often delays flights during the winter fog.
After landing at the airport, take a pre-paid taxi to minimize hassle. Chandigarh is a good four-hour drive away, so stop for a bite on the Kalka-Shimla highway.

After independence, the city became the capital of Punjab and was later named the capital of Himachal Pradesh. It is the principal commercial, cultural and educational centre of the state.
Small hamlets were recorded prior to 1815 when British forces took control of the area. The climatic conditions attracted the British to establish the city in the dense forests of Himalayas. As the summer capital, Shimla hosted many important political meetings including the Simla Accord of 1914 and the Simla Conference of 1945. After independence, the state of Himachal Pradesh came into being in 1948 as a result of integration of 28 princely states. Even after independence, the city remained an important political centre, hosting the Simla Agreement of 1972. After reorganisation of state of Himachal Pradesh, the existing Mahasu district was named Shimla. Its name is derived from the goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali.
Shimla is home to a number of buildings that are styled in the Tudorbethan and neo-Gothic architectures dating from the colonial era, as well as multiple temples and churches. The colonial architecture and churches, the temples and the natural environment of the city attracts tourists. Attractions include the Viceroy Lodge, the Christ Church, the Jakhoo Temple, the Mall Road and the Ridge, which together form the city centre. The Kalka–Shimla Railway line built by the British, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also a major tourist attraction. Owing to its steep terrain, Shimla hosts the mountain biking race MTB Himalaya, which started in 2005 and is regarded as the biggest event of its kind in South Asia. Shopping in Shimla Reloaded
This video was taken during my visit to Chandigarh-Shimla in March 2017.
There are many shopping places in Shimla that will take care of your demands and taste. A judicious shopper would definitely find Shimla shopping an enjoyable experience.
One of the most popular places to go to for shopping is at the Mall road in Shimla. This place is the shopping hub and commercial center of Shimla. One can find small souvenirs and knick-knacks here along with handicrafts and other artifacts that Shimla is famous for. You can buy the famous Himachali caps that are available in almost any shop. These caps come in various colors and designs and also have intricate designs embroidered on them. You can buy a variety of these caps, as they are very affordable and absolutely comfortable.
Yet another item that tops a shopper's list in Shimla are the woolen shawls that are available very easily in every shop in Shimla. These shawls come in different shapes and sizes and the variety of colors is huge. The shawls come in different kinds of wool also. One can find mirror work, thread work, sequins and embroidery decorating these shawls. Apart from shawls, you can always pick up colorful gloves, sweaters and socks, which are not found anywhere else in India and are exclusive of Shimla.
Another popular shopping place is the Lower Bazaar, which is also known as the Subzi Mandi. This place is absolutely chaotic yet full of life. There are endless mazes of narrow lanes merging into one another and just when you think there is a dead end ahead, you find another lane full of shops selling just about anything you can think of! Local craftsmen make beautiful walking sticks by carving wood in different designs and shapes. You could one of those and use it while you walk along the woods. This is available in Lakkar Bazaar (lakkad means wood), which is quite famous for wooden souvenirs.

Queen of Hills Shimla is a capital of Himachal Pradesh surrounded by its natural beauty is one of the recognized tourist spot in India. Three are many tourist places to visit in and around Shimla like Indian Institute of Advance Studies, Glen, Ridge, Mall Road, Lakkar bazaar, Jakhu Temple Fagu, Kufri, chail etc.
For this reason, the locals — and tourists — are often found strolling on this road in the evenings.
Mall road has a number of showrooms, department stores, shops, restaurants and cafes. A Himachal emporium that offers handicraft products of Himachal Pradesh like locally designed woolen cloths, branded cloths, pottery items. There are at least three books shops including one that sells old books.
Scandal point is where the Mall road joins Ridge road on the west side. The name arose from the commotion caused by the supposed elopement of a British lady with an Indian Maharaja. The story goes that the then Maharaja of Patiala had eloped with the daughter of the British Viceroy. This had led to the Maharaja being banished from entering Shimla by the British authorities. He countered the move by setting himself a new summer capital -- now famous hill resort of Chail, 45 km from Shimla. The most prominent feature of the point today is a statue of the Indian freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai (no relation to the scandal)
Apart from it, Shimla has number of precious places where everyone wants to go for at least one time. Some places are the Ridge, Jakhoo Hill & Temple, Summer Hill, Colonial Homes, Christ Church, Prospect Hill, State Museum, Viceroy Lodge, Tara Devi Temple etc. Although these spots are old but the value of these places are the same and will be forever.
