Beautiful Moscow. VDNKh - The Main Entrance Arch
The imposing 104-foot arch was built to the plans drawn up by Innokenty Mel'chakov in 1954.
The Central Arch of the 1954 revamped The Economic Achievement Exhibition is completely surrounded by a farmer-driver and a farm-girl, and decorated with wheatsheaves.
The design was by Sergei Orlov - Which statue of Moscow city-founder Yuri Dolgoruky stands in pride of place on the city's main street, too.
In fact the continuation of the theme of wheat and grain runs through the entire design of the exhibition. Sheaves and grains are found within the décor of almost all pavilions, in the design of the fountains, and even in the casting of the lampposts.

RUSSIA: THE FATHERLAND-ALL RUSSIA ALLIANCE
Russian/Nat
A powerful new Russian political alliance has called for the sweeping powers of the Russian presidency to be divided up.
The Fatherland-All Russia alliance, forged by Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, former Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov and a group of regional governors, proposed weakening the presidency in favour of giving more power to parliament and the prime minister.
Fatherland-All Russia released its entire platform on Saturday, saying it opposes a return to a fully state-controlled economy but advocates greater government regulation over business.
On behalf of the new bloc, former prime minister Yevgeny Primakov announced the unanimous approval of the federal list of candidates for the State Duma.
Primakov promised no return to Soviet-style curbs on individual freedoms.
The ex-prime minister also ruled out re-nationalising industries privatised during President Yeltsin's leadership.
Fatherland-All Russia is expected to do well in December's elections for the lower house of parliament.
Both Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and Primakov are topping the polls as prospective candidates in next year's presidential election, although both have been coy about running.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Our bloc has all it takes to win. Every one of us is a professional in his own sphere. And these kind of people, the professionals will be put forward as our candidates for Duma elections.
SUPER CAPTION: Yevgeny Primakov, Former Russian Prime Minister
The Fatherland-All Russia alliance is a powerful threat to President Boris Yeltsin, who was a key architect behind Russia's current constitution, which gives the president broad powers.
His opponents and observers say that leaves power in Russia too unbalanced and have long urged amending the constitution.
Yeltsin is barred by law from seeking a third term in the election.
But there has been speculation that Kremlin aides are plotting to keep the 68-year old president in power to preserve their own clout and benefits.
With the Yeltsin regime increasingly isolated and in the midst of a scandal over allegations of massive money laundering, Fatherland officials reiterated their intention to guarantee the security of Yeltsin and his family after he leaves office.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
It is not meant to be a guarantee to Yeltsin personally. Clearly, if Russia aspires to become a real democracy it should learn to respect the leaders it elects - even after their term is over.
SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Yastrzhembsky, Fatherland spokesman
With other parties talking of a Ceaucescu-type scenario for the Russian president, his best bet may be to back the man he sacked earlier this year.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW MAYOR LUZHKOV LAUNCHES OWN POLITICAL MOVEMENT
Russian/Nat
Accusing the government of servility to foreign advisers, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov launched his own political movement, in an apparently bid to support his likely presidential bid in 2000.
Luzhkov, who often exploits Russians' nationalism, was particularly outspoken about the country's alleged subjection to the West.
He said foreigners had infiltrated the management of the country, taking advantage of Russia's yawning foreign debt.
Under Luzhkov's administration, Moscow was transformed into Russia's only boomtown - at least until the current economic crisis hit.
But it is unclear how much support Luzhkov can muster in the impoverished hinterlands, which often resent Moscow's relative prosperity and special status.
The stunning announcement from Russia's politically-ambitious mayor came with characteristic secretiveness, his aides deciding at the last minute to bar the press from all but the opening remarks.
He has said that his movement, called Fatherland, would advocate free-market principles yet preserve a strong state sector in the economy.
So far, Luzhkov has not said outright that he would run for president in the 2000 election, but he hinted he planned to join the race.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
We discussed whether we would participate in the year 2000 presidential elections as well as in the State Duma elections and in the regional elections. We don't hide the fact that we want power -- power to rule. If a movement is created that does not pretend to want power, then you would ask how could it ever realise its goals? We discussed power being well-formed and open. We discussed the principles of power, that it should serve the people, not command or dictate them.
SUPERCAPTION: Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov
Luzhkov said the current government gave too much power to foreign investors, who took advantage of Russia's vast foreign debt.
Russia owes at least 200 (b) billion U-S dollars in foreign debt, including some inherited from the Soviet Union.
International creditors have offered billions of dollars in aid, but only if Russia reforms its economic practices.

STORYLINE:
Russians voted on Sunday in a parliamentary election where the only question is the size of the majority that President Vladimir Putin's party will win.
Polls opened at 8 o'clock in the morning local time all over Russia (0500 GMT), stretching eight time zones.
The Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov casting his vote, told reporters; The next Duma still has very much work to do. If we are to move forward their main task is to strengthen social policies and the real development of the economy.
The election follows months of increasingly acidic rhetoric against the West and efforts to stifle opponents.
Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov described the elections as complex, irresponsible and dirty.
If under Yeltsin there were two methods to rig the ballot, one through intimidation, the second by falsifying the ballot papers, now they have invented at least 15 methods of attracting and deceiving the voters, he told reporters after voting in Moscow.
A huge win for Vladimir Putin's United Russia party could pave the way for him to stay at the country's helm once his presidential term expires in the spring.
Putin is constitutionally prohibited from running for a third consecutive term as president in March.
But he clearly wants to keep his hand on the helm in Russia, and has raised the prospect of becoming prime minister; many supporters have suggested his becoming a national leader, though what duties and powers that would entail remain unclear.
He has said that a strong showing for the party on Sunday would give him the moral right to ensure that politicians continue his policies.
The vote is the first national ballot under new election laws that have been widely criticised as marginalising opposition forces.
All the seats will be awarded proportionately to how much of the vote a party receives; in previous elections, half the seats were chosen among candidates contesting a specific district, which allowed a few mavericks to get in.
The new laws also say a party must receive at least 7 percent of the national vote to get any seats - up from the previous 5 percent.
Although the election results were seen as a foregone conclusion, voter turnout appeared substantial.
An hour before polls closed in Far Eastern Kamchatka, nine hours ahead of Moscow, officials reported turnout above 53 percent, about 2 percentage points higher than in the 2003 Duma elections.
But international organisations are not able to watch as closely as they had hoped.
