Oberlahnstein: medieval fortifications on the Rhine | Germany #9
A visit to Oberlahnstein. This medieval town, which is now part of Lahnstein, was heavily fortified during the middle ages due to its strategic position on the Rhine. There are three castles in the town's vicinity: Schloss Martinsburg on the edge of town, Burg Lahneck on the hill overlooking the town, and Schloss Stolzenfels on the opposite bank of the Rhine. Some stretches of the medieval city wall including towers have been preserved. Other historic buildings include the church of St Martin, the old town hall, and the old toll house on the Lahn.

Burg Rheinfels (Rheinfels Castle) medieval ruins on the Rhine River, Germany
Perched on the highest point above the town of Sankt Goar (St. Goar), it is actually a fairly easy and very pleasurable walk from the town to get to Burg Rheinfels. Not overly strenuous, it offers beautiful views of both the town below and the vast Rhine River Valley.
We began our visit there by doing a very enjoyable visit to Sankt Goar, (which you can see in another video here:
)
then began our equally enjoyable walk up to the castle. Since it doesn't tire you out, there is plenty of energy left to spend many hours at this fascinating ruin.
The history of the castle dates back to roughly to the year 1245, when work began by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen. After several expansions, it was the largest fortress in the Middle Rhein Valley between Koblenz and Mainz. It is considered to be the largest castle on the Rhine, though much of it is now in ruins. Some of the outer buildings are now a luxury hotel, restaurant (where we had a delicious lunch to come with our view)

Ehrenbreitstein Fort, Koblenz (cable car, views & lift down), Germany - 24th August, 2014
Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (German: Festung Ehrenbreitstein) is a fortress on the mountain of the same name on the east bank of the Rhine opposite the town of Koblenz in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Occupying the position of an earlier fortress destroyed by the French in 1801, it was built as the backbone of the regional fortification system, Festung Koblenz, by Prussia between 1817 and 1828 and guarded the middle Rhine region, an area that had been invaded by French troops repeatedly before. The Prussian fortress was never attacked.
Since 2002, Ehrenbreitstein has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
This film features: views of the fort from the opposite bank on the Rhine; the cable car ride up to the fort; views around the fort; views from the fort over the Koblenz area; the lift down from the fort; and views of the fort from beneath.

Germany: Würzburg - Fortress Marienberg
Marienberg Fortress (Festung Marienberg) is a prominent landmark on the left bank of the Main river in Würzburg, in the Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. The mighty Fortress Marienberg is a symbol of Würzburg and served as a home of the local prince-bishops for nearly five centuries. It has been a fort since ancient times. Most of the current structures originally were built in Renaissance and Baroque styles between the 16th and 18th centuries. After Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden conquered the area in 1631 during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was reconstructed as a Baroque residence. After it ceased to serve as residence of the Bishops of Würzburg, the fortress saw repeated action in the wars of the late 18th and 19th centuries. Festung Marienberg was severely damaged by British bombs in March 1945 and only fully rebuilt in 1990. Today, it houses two museums.

St. Goar, Loreley, Mittelrhein - Germany HD Travel Channel
St. Goar is located below the dangerous rapids on the left bank of the middle Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Anyone who drives from the Hunsrück via Simmern to St. Goar sees first the Cat and the Mouse Castle, before taking the road down to the Rhine. Both castles are part of the sister town St.Goarshausen.
The construction of Maus Castle (Mouse Castle), under the original name of St. Peterseck, was started by the Archbishop Bohemond II of Trier in 1356 and lasted 30 years. It served to enforce the Rhine toll rights and to defend the borders of the territory of Trier against the Counts of Katzenelenbogen. In the late 14th Century it served temporarily residence of the Electors. Maus Castle is now privately owned, but guided tours are offered during the summer months.
The Katz Castle (Cat Castle), originally named Castle Neukatzenelnbogen after the builder, the Count of Katzenelenbogen, who built the castle in 1371 as a toll castle for the ships sailing downstream. Today Katz Castle is owned by Japanese proprietors and was place of action for the second of the Yoko Tsuno comic series - The organ of the devil.
In 1245, after St. Goar had received city rights, Count Diether V of Katzenelenbogen erected on the left bank Rheinfels Castle as toll Castle for ships sailing upstream. In the 17th Century the castle has been expanded to the largest fortification in the Middle Rhine Valley. 1794, the castle was surrendered without a fight to the French revolutionary troops and shortly thereafter blown up.
Rheinfels Castle is the biggest castle complex at the Rhine and sits enthroned as landmark above the city of St. Goar. Today, Rheinfels Castle is an attractive tourist destination and houses the Romantic Hotel Rheinfels Castle.
The settlement in this area started in Roman times. The foundation of the city dates back to the Holy Goar who settled here in 511 AD to Christianize the rural population. At that time, he built a hermitage, hospice and a chapel from which the monastery Sankt Goar emerged.

AmaWaterways Excursion to Koblenz, Germany on Prague to Paris River Cruise on Rhine & Mosel Rivers
AmaWaterways Excursion to Koblenz, Germany during Prague to Paris River Cruise on the Main, Rhine and Mosel Rivers documented by travel filmmaker Clint Denn. Koblenz is a German city situated on both banks of the Rhine at its confluence with the Moselle, where the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) and its monument (Emperor William I on horseback) are situated. As Koblenz was one of the military posts established by Drusus about 8 BC, the town celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 1992. The name Koblenz originates from Latin (ad) confluentes, confluence or (at the) merging of rivers. Subsequently it was Covelenz and Cobelenz. In the local dialect the name is Kowelenz. After Mainz and Ludwigshafen am Rhein, it is the third largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate, with a population of c. 106,000 (2006). Koblenz lies in the Rhineland, 92 kilometers (57 mi) southeast of Cologne by rail.
Around 1000 BC, early fortifications were erected on the Festung Ehrenbreitstein hill on the opposite side of the Moselle. In 55 BC, Roman troops commanded by Julius Caesar reached the Rhine and built a bridge between Koblenz and Andernach. About 9 BC, the Castellum apud Confluentes, was one of the military posts established by Drusus. Remains of a large bridge built in 49 AD by the Romans are still visible. The Romans built two castles as protection for the bridge, one in 9 AD and another in the 2nd century, the latter being destroyed by the Franks in 259. North of Koblenz was a temple of Mercury and Rosmerta (a Gallo-Roman deity), which remained in use up to the 5th century.
