United Kingdom (UK) Travel Guide - City Hall in Cardiff
Take a tour of Cardiff City Hall in Cardiff, United Kingdom -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Cardiff City Hall is a cornerstone of civic engagement in the United Kingdom.
The magisterial clock tower looms above a sprawling plaza, lovely gardens, and charming streets.
Inside the four-faced tower are three bells that continue to chime the hour for the city's people.
The fifth structure to hold this honor, the current hall was erected in the early 1900's.
This building exemplifies the popular Edwardian architectural style of the time.
From any angle, Cardiff City Hall reflects the austerity of what it represents.

UK: CARDIFF: PRIME MINISTER TONY BLAIR ARRIVES AT CITY HALL
English/Nat
European Union leaders met in Cardiff on Monday to discuss political and economic reforms aimed at preparing the 15-nation community for a single currency.
The also will also be discussing ways of expanding its membership in central and eastern Europe.
But the summit is unlikely to take any key decisions.
Britain wants leaders to focus on how the community can be made to work for its 360 (m) million citizens, many of whom see Brussels as a remote but powerful influence on their daily lives.
The British Prime Minister Tony Blair had these words of support for England's captain Glen Hoddle.
SOUNDBITE:
Whatever it is he's got a really tough job. My job is tough from time to time, but his job is extremely tough. I think the best thing is to leave the team selection in the hands of the coach and whatever the team selection is to give him a hundred per cent backing.

UK: CARDIFF: EU LEADERS SUMMIT (1)
English/Nat
European Union leaders are in Cardiff on Monday to discuss economic and political change in Europe, and also the inclusion of new members to the Union.
During the talks, Britain warned fellow E-U leaders that financial turmoil in Asia poses the greatest risk to the world economy and called for determined action to curb unemployment.
The crisis in Kosovo was also on the agenda and demonstration took place outside the summit meeting in Cardiff's City Hall, demanding strong action against Serbian President Milosevic.
E-U leaders have spent the morning in closed session at Cardiff City Hall.
Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair warned fellow European leaders at the talks that financial turmoil in Asia poses the greatest risk to the world economy.
He said it is vital that Europe formally adopts action plans on curbing unemployment and broad economic guidelines to address low-inflation and low-deficit policies.
Furthermore, the president of the European Parliament warned the E-U leaders plans to enlarge the E-U could be delayed because of the need to reform the 15-nation group's institutions and budget.
The countries waiting to be admitted into the E-U include Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Estonia, who had hoped to have been able to qualify for inclusion by the year 2002.
The major E-U institutions are struggling to cope with the existing 15-nation Union and it is feared that a decision-making gridlock will occur when new countries join.
Early debate on the so-called Agenda 2000 package suggests that some of the wealthier nations -- Germany, Austria, Sweden and the Netherlands -- already think they pay too much money into Brussels' coffers.
Agenda 2000 is expected to be under discussion by the E-U leaders in their afternoon session on Monday.
Meanwhile, while the E-U took a break from their discussions on Monday morning, a group of demonstrators gathered outside Cardiff's City Hall to protest against Serbia's aggression against the besieged province of Kosovo.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
So why we came here was to ask, to appeal on European countries to back those measures of the Contact group and to really back them with force - because that is the only way you can deter Serbia.

NATO fighter planes have put on a massive show of strength in the Balkan region on Monday in a bid to step up pressure on President Milosovec to withdraw his army from the Serbian province of Kosovo.
Commanders of Determined Falcon said afterwards that the exercise went like clockwork.
In Cardiff, German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel said that there is a chance that Russia may be able to convince Serbia to back down when President Milosovec visits Russian President Yeltsin in Moscow on Tuesday.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
We wait for the result of the discussions which are today in Moscow between President Yeltsin, Foreign Minister Primakov and President Milosovec and we hope that they are able to overcome the difficulties. At the forefront we need a political and diplomatic solution and no military intervention. Military intervention only if we are not able to find a political and diplomatic solution.
SUPER CAPTION: Klaus Kinkel, German Foreign Minister
However, the outcome looks uncertain as Russia has protested on Monday that it had not been properly informed of the NATO exercise and has broken with other big powers on applying sanctions to force Milosovec to comply.

Top best places to visit in Cardiff, Wales
Cardiff is the capital and largest city of Wales and the tenth largest city in the United Kingdom.
Cardiff, City of Arcades, is famous for Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary indoor shopping arcades but it’s also a national financial and cultural hub.
The center of the town is situated around Cardiff Castle.
This is a medieval castle built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of the 3rd century Roman fort.
Nowadays, unique arcades and major pedestrian streets around the castle make a great atmosphere to relax and to do shopping in style.
The castle is surrounded by two parks, where you can find the City Hall, National Museum and many more impressive buildings.
At the back of town hall are the Alexandra Gardens whose center contains the beautiful National War Memorial of Wales.
Close to the Castle is also the Millennium Stadium, a must see arena for any sport lover.
One of the most popular spots among tourists and residents is Cardiff Bay.
This area is full of restaurants, bars, notable buildings and amazing views.
The first place to go here is the futuristic Wales Millennium Centre for opera, theater, gallery and tourist information.
The next landmarks to see are:
The former headquarters of the Dock Company, the Pierhead Building.
And, standing just next to it, the Senedd, home to the National Assembly for Wales.
You can also take a lovely 2km walk with the harbor on one side of the path and the sea on the other.
There are many castles just outside of the city that are worth visiting. Castell Coch is one of them.
The first stronghold on the site was built by the Normans in the 11th century, and the most recent walls comes from the 19th century.
8 miles outside of Cardiff is a small town Caerphilly which is know for its medieval castle.
The fortification, which was constructed in the 13th century, is surrounded by extensive artificial lakes.
This picturesque citadel is the second largest castle in Britain.

Let's Visit Cardiff, Wales
Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, offers a lot of great sights to check out from its historic downtown centre to its harbour as well as the beautiful Cardiff Castle, dating back to the days of William the Conqueror. I check out Bute Park along with Cardiff Castle (including the Norman Keep), some of the downtown area, Cardiff City Hall, and then finish off over at Mermaid Quay located along the harbour.
