You can spend the day on a boat crouse around the canals, experiencing the city by horse and carriage or taking a
lovely stroll around the many canals.
Delft was established in 1246 and is famous for its Delft Blue ceramics inspired by Chinese porcelain brought to The
Netherlands by the Dutch Oost India Company.
The famous painter Jan Vermeer was born in Delft where he lived and worked his whole life.
Willem of Orange, the first king of the Netherlands took up residence in Delft in 1572 and is buried in the New Church
at the main square like all of the Dutch Royal family is buried to date.

HOLLAND: Delft city - view from church tower [HD]
The church tower of the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) in Delft is the second highest in the Netherlands (108,75 metres, 356.79 ft), after the Domtoren in Utrecht. It offers a perfect view across Delft and its surroundings. In good weather, you can easily see Rotterdam and The Hague from the top. The tower has 376 steps and reaches a height of 85 metres (278.87 ft), so it is only appropriate for visitors with good physical fitness. There is no lift.
The church was completed in 1496.
The city of Delft is primarily known for its historic town centre with canals; also for the painter Vermeer, Delft Blue pottery (Delftware), the Delft University of Technology, and its association with the Dutch royal family, the House of Orange-Nassau.

Starting with a visit to Haarlem, then to Leiden, doing a few day trips out from there. Then to Delft for three more nights and excursions to The Hague, political capital of the nation.
Then to Rotterdam the great modern city of the Netherlands, continuing to Utrecht, a university town with a large historic center and then to Maastricht in the southern part of the country. I'll also be going up to the Alkmaar cheese market which is a lot of fun.

Traveling between cities was so easy because the Netherlands has got perhaps the best train system in Europe. It's phenomenal. The trains are clean, fast, frequent and not expensive. This is a small country, so the cities are relatively close together, you can get from one to the next and 15 or 30 minutes usually. This superb rail service in itself makes a good reason to visit this country, shift for it really does eliminate some of those logistical problems of travel, just getting around. It is so easy with these trains.
Some call it Holland, but the country is The Netherlands. Holland is two provinces in the Netherlands.

On Saturday I took another half-day tour out of Amsterdam. First I visited the historic town of Delft. Next there was a very brief stop at The Hague. The tour concluded at Madurodam, a miniature park of scale model replicas of famous Dutch castles, public buildings and places.

The Nieuwe Kerk (English: New Church) is a Protestant church in the city of Delft in the Netherlands. The building is located on Delft Market Square (Markt), opposite to the City Hall. In 1584, William the Silent was entombed here in a mausoleum designed by Hendrick and Pieter de Keyser. Since then members of the House of Orange-Nassau have been entombed in the royal crypt. The latest are Queen Juliana and her husband Prince Bernhard in 2004. The private royal family crypt is not open to the public. The church tower (109m) is the second highest in the Netherlands, after the Domtoren in Utrecht.
