Rotterdam, trams, canals, museums, Netherlands
Starting out at the Rotterdam train station, which is where you would probably be arriving when you come to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. There's an excellent Tourist Information counter here where you can get a lot of good advice about the main sites you want to see in your visit.
The tram station out front is quite active with eight different tramlines running through it. You'll quickly reach anywhere in town from the central station.
There are very modern buildings in Rotterdam, and they are well planned with apartments in the downtown area and some parks and you've got the idyllic waterfront with the boat traffic and the apartments around it.
There is a culture history museum. There's an excellent art museum. And that's where we are heading soon in the program, show you a couple of fine museums.
First we walk along Westersingel canal, with parks along the banks of the canal, you've got some ducks quacking by and also it's an outdoor sculpture garden with fountains and benches and a wide promenade that makes for very easy and pleasant walking.
Then we visit a great museum, Boymans van Beuningen, which is one of the major art museums in the Netherlands, an amazing collection that spans from the Renaissance and earlier right up through modern design.
Then, the museum we are heading for next is all about people and culture history called the World Museum and English, or in Dutch, the name is Wereldmuseum.
The city population is 640,000 making it second largest after Amsterdam, but if you include the greater metropolitan area extending to the Hague, population totals 2.5 million. Rotterdam has got 38 skyscrapers and 352 high-rises with many more skyscrapers coming up soon.
There are nine different tramlines operating in Rotterdam, making this a very convenient way to get around, and they are thoroughly modernized. Although, in their beginnings, they were founded in 1878 as horse-drawn trams. In 1904 the first electric trams began service and gradually the horse wagons were phased out. By 1906 there was already five electric tramlines operating and then four more lines began in the next four years. The last horse cars stopped running by 1925. The maximum extent of Rotterdam's tramway network was 25 lines, which was reached in 1930.
Throughout the main cities of Europe, there has been a similar history of trams developing from horse to electric, and then declining, and in recent years, a resurgence in popularity of the system. Currently 40 different Dutch cities have operating tram systems, but only two have metros, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Rotterdam, The Netherlands - A Tour Of The Dutch City
A tour of the Dutch city of #Rotterdam with our guide Hassan Hidare from Rotterdam pages.
???????? Where we stayed in Rotterdam -
Rotterdam, South Holland in the Netherlands is only 25 minutes by train from Schiphol Airport and really easy to reach.
Unlike Amsterdam, the port city of Rotterdam was almost completely destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing during World War II. During the post war reconstruction Rotterdam became known for its groundbreaking architecture.
These building include the 1970’s cube houses designed by architect Piet Blom and the Pauluskerk. One of the old building which survived the war was the Witte Huis or ‘White House’ built in 1898 and was one Europe’s first skyscraper.
As well as the architecture, you can get great food from one of the 100 stalls at the impressive Markthal and you must visit some of the bars on the popular Witte de Withstraat.
So instead of just staying in Amsterdam when visiting the Netherlands you must take a trip to the far less crowded Rotterdam

Rotterdam (/ˈrɒtərdæm/ or /ˌrɒtərˈdæm/; Dutch: [ˌrɔtərˈdɑm] is a city in the Netherlands, located in South Holland, within the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt river delta at the North Sea. Its history goes back to 1270 when a dam was constructed in the Rotte river by people settled around it for safety. In 1340 Rotterdam was granted city rights by the Count of Holland and slowly grew into a major logistic and economic centre. Nowadays it is home to Europe's largest port and has a population of 633,471 (2017, city proper), ranking second in the Netherlands, just behind Amsterdam. The Greater Rijnmond area is home to approximately 1.4 million people and the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Area makes for the 168th most populous urban area in the world. Rotterdam is part of the yet larger Randstad conurbation with a total population of 7,100,000.
The city of Rotterdam is known for the Erasmus University, riverside setting, lively cultural life and its maritime heritage. The near-complete destruction of Rotterdam's city centre during World War II (known as the Rotterdam Blitz) has resulted in a varied architectural landscape including sky-scrapers, which are an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities. Rotterdam is home to some world-famous architecture from renowned architects like Rem Koolhaas, Piet Blom, Ben van Berkel and others. Recently Rotterdam was listed eighth in The Rough Guide Top 10 Cities to Visit and fifth in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2016 and was voted 2015 European City of the Year by the Academy of Urbanism.
The port of Rotterdam is the largest cargo port in Europe and the 10th largest in the world. Rotterdam's logistic success is based on its strategic location on the North Sea, directly at the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse) channel leading into the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta. The rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt give waterway access into the heart of Western Europe, including the highly industrialized Ruhr region. The extensive distribution system including rail, roads, and waterways have earned Rotterdam the nickname Gateway to Europe, and, conversely; Gateway to the World in Europe.

Rotterdam, Netherlands in 4K (UHD)
Rotterdam is the second largest city in The Netherlands and it is a major port city in the Dutch province of South Holland. Most of the city's architecture is bold, modern and completely reconstructed since the majority of the city was leveled during World War II. The oldest origins of Rotterdam (de Stadsdriehoek or City Triangle) were bombed away, but that large quarters there around survived the war.

Arrival in Rotterdam (1:30), Cube houses (2:00), central library (2:56), Market Hall (3:57), Erasmus Bridge (6:04), Central Station (7:34)
The near-complete destruction of Rotterdam's city centre during World War 2 has resulted in a varied architectural landscape including sky-scrapers, which are an uncommon sight in other Dutch cities. Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe.
Cube houses are a set of 40 innovative houses built in Rotterdam, designed by architect Piet Blom. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest. As residents are disturbed so often by curious passers-by, one owner decided to open a show cube, which is furnished as a normal house, and is making a living out of it. The houses contain three floors. The walls and windows are angled at 54.7 degrees. The total area of the apartment is around 100 square meters, but around a quarter of the space is unusable because of the walls that are under the angled ceilings.
The Market Hall is a residential- and office building with a market hall underneath, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars. The inside of the building is painted with a 11.000 m2 artwork of Arno Coenen, named 'Hoorn des Overvloeds'. The artwork shows strongly enlarged fruits, vegetables, seeds, fish, flowers and insects.
The Erasmus Bridge is a combined cable-stayed and bascule bridge in the centre of Rotterdam, connecting the north and south parts of this city, second largest in the Netherlands. The southernmost span of the bridge has an 89-metre-long (292 ft) bascule bridge for ships that cannot pass under the bridge. The bascule bridge is the largest and heaviest in Western Europe and has the largest panel of its type in the world.
Rotterdam Central Station is the main railway station in Rotterdam. A total reconstruction of the station and its surroundings started in 2004 to cope with an increasing number of trains, for example the high-speed train between Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. The current station building, located at Station Square, was officially opened in March 2014.

Lijnbaan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lijnbaan is the main shopping street of Rotterdam. It was opened in 1953, as the main pedestrian street in the new shopping district, after the old shopping district was completely destroyed during the bombing of Rotterdam by the German Luftwaffe. It was designed by the firm Van den Broek & Bakema led by architects Jo van den Broek and Jacob B. Bakema.
It's a complete car-free zone and has been a testcase for numerous car-free shopping streets around the world.
There are plans to redevelop the street as part of bigger redevelopments of the shopping district. The Beurstraverse (by de Architekten Cie) is an example of these redevelopments.

Rotterdam is world famous mainly because of the port, but in the last decade Rotterdam has grown into a bustling but welcoming metropole. Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands with 600.000 inhabitants and 1.200.000 in greater Rotterdam.
Rotterdam is famous for its festivals , offers a great nightlife, and has lot of shops which are open 7 days a week! In addition, Rotterdam is well known for its modern architecture which you can find throughout the city. The Erasmus Bridge and the Cube houses are great examples of this modern industrial design. All sights in Rotterdam can be reached by means of the quick and cheap public transport system.
Rotterdam is also home to a big aquarium in the Rotterdam Zoo, the Euromast panorama tower, the antique Steamship ss Rotterdam and Spido harbour tours. The harbour city also offers world class museums like Boijmans - Van Beuningen and the World Arts Museum. Most attractions have special facilities for kids as well.
Rotterdam is world famous for its modern architecture which you can find anywhere within the city. Rotterdam is thus home to many design museums and leading architectural firms which are involved in the design of famous buildings and bridges in major cities around the globe. Rotterdam is constantly working on ambitious new architectural projects in and around the city to remain the number one city of modern architecture. This vibrant city is constantly changing and you can feel and see these changes all around.
Once you leave the Central Station you will understand why Rotterdam is called the Dutch capital of modern architecture. The brand new Rotterdam Central Station is an architectural highlight and the Millennium Tower opposite to Rotterdam Central Station has the looks of the Empire State building in New York. The Delftse Poort building hast been the tallest office building in the Netherlands for a decade, but it has been surpassed by the impressive Maas Tower. In 2020, the impressive Zalmhaven Tower, will take the lead in the race of the tallest building of the Netherlands. This 215-meter tall residential skyscraper is located in the Maritime Quarters of Rotterdam. In the heart of Rotterdam city centre you can't miss the extraordinary Cube Houses and the Market Hall. The Brug (Bridge) office building is another architectural highlight of Rotterdam, because it is built at a height of 25 meters above an existing historic plant. The Shipping and Transport College is located in a stunning periscope shaped building! And don't forget to visit the UNESCO site Van Nelle Factory.
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Its Museum District houses the Van Gogh Museum, works by Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, and modern art at the Stedelijk. Cycling is key to the city’s character, and there are numerous bike paths.
Museums are the main tourist attraction in Amsterdam. Everyone knows the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum, but there is much more. Amsterdam has over seventy museums which attract millions of visitors each year.
Coffeeshops in Holland are allowed to sell small amounts of cannabis and are strictly regulated and taxed. Furthermore, coffeeshops must not sell to anyone under 18 and they must not sell more than 5g to any customer. Hard drugs are strictly prohibited.
Rotterdam vs Amsterdam - Tourism
Amsterdam and Rotterdam are the two largest cities in The Netherlands and offer tourists a variety of hidden and not so hidden treasures. While the Amsterdam tourist seeks comfort in many cliches such as the Red Light District and the coffeeshops, the Rotterdam tourist spends its time culturally and intellectually developing itself. From cube houses to the Erasmus bridge, Rotterdam astounds one tourist after the other. Don’t be too quick to choose Holland’s capital over Europe’s port; judge for yourself, which tourist do you think will survive evolution in the end?
Mockumentary made for the course New Media Production about the Rotterdam tourist vs the Amsterdam tourist.
Snow in Rotterdam
There was some great snow in Rotterdam for a couple of days. I was travelling through the city and was able to film some areas.
Hope you enjoy the scene!

What To Do In Rotterdam, The Netherlands
This video is a city guide and city tour of Rotterdam. You'll see my top 5 highlights of one of the most modern cities in Europe.
Above all, Rotterdam is a city with vision. It was very nearly completely destroyed during World War II and chose to see the devastating loss as an opportunity to innovate and build anew. The city was a blank slate for architects and artists. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of war, this Dutch city has become a city of the future. Rotterdam is a centre for design, art, architecture, and sustainability. Locals joke that you should take a photo of the skyline today because it won't be the same tomorrow.
The Floating Forest is a great symbol of all that Rotterdam cultivates and inspires. It's an art installation of twenty live trees floating in the harbour. Rotterdam has the largest harbour in Europe and you can't talk about the city without reference to the water. The trees are recycled from the city's 'tree bank.' With all the new construction, trees are sometimes cut down in the march of progress. Now, instead of being chopped, they are moved to a tree bank for further use and enjoyment. The trees float in recycled sea buoys that are filled with fresh water to sustain the trees. The artist, Jorge Bakker, hopes the public art will get people talking about the relationship between the city dweller and nature. In this time of climate change and urbanization, this is relevant not only to Rotterdam but the entire world.
The Erasmus Bridge - Erasmusbrug, in Dutch - is the graceful link between northern and southern Rotterdam. Locals adore this steel-cabled suspension bridge and lovingly refer to it as 'the swan.'
Nearby the bridge, and across from the Fenix Food Factory, is Hotel New York. This is the former head office of the Holland America Line - the first shipping and passenger ship connecting the Netherlands and the United States. It was also the first connection between the two continents.
The newest architectural gem of Rotterdam is the Market Hall (Markthal). It's the first covered market in the Netherlands and is a masterful example of innovative multi-use space. Inside you'll find food vendors, shops, restaurants, parking for 1200 cars and over 200 residential apartments. The exterior is plain grey stone so as to draw attention to the interior which is dominated by the massive painting on the ceiling. Covering 11,000 square metres, it's the largest painting in the world and is known as the Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam.
Just across from the Markthal are the world-famous, iconic cube houses. Conceived and designed in the 1970s to solve the dilemma of housing above a pedestrian bridge, these atypical homes show, again, how Rotterdam answers limitation with innovation. The cube houses are meant to represent an abstract forest and are tilted at an angle that gives excellent views of the surrounding area. Ironically, however, because of the slanted walls and ceilings, only a quarter of the interior space is actually usable.
Looking around, it's easy to see why Rotterdam feels futuristic and is leading the way for green living and modern design. Have you visited Rotterdam? I'd love to hear your impressions so please leave a comment down below.

Arriving in Rotterdam: How to Register at City Hall?
Jane has found a house in Rotterdam. Since she intends on staying for more than 4 months, she has to register at the City Hall of the Municipality. After registration, Jane will receive a Dutch Citizen Number (BSN), which is necessary would she want to be employed or to request certain services.
Note: If Jane lives in Schiedam or Capelle a/d IJssel, she is NOT a resident of Rotterdam. She can find out how to make an appointment for registration at these City Halls, and what to bring, on the website (
So, let's get to the registration at the City Hall of Rotterdam. Jane cannot drop by the City Hall spontaneously. Instead: she has to make an appointment. There are two ways to go here:
1. The first option is to make an appointment for one of the One Stop Shops organized by EUR, which are held several days in Summer, Fall and Winter on campus.
2. Can’t make it to the One Stop Shop? Jane should make an appointment to visit the City Hall via 14010 or the municipal website. However: she should take into account waiting times
Note: that there is but one situation in which Jane has to visit the City Hall and can’t be registered during the one stop shop. This is when Jane lives in Rotterdam, but within a postal zone that requires a permit of residence (aka the HVV). Jane can check this requirement filling out her postal code on the website of the municipality: The International Office website allows her to book a special appointment for HVV registration at the City Hall.
Whether Jane goes to the Rotterdam City Hall, or attends the One Stop Shops on campus: she has to be well-prepared taking the required documents for Municipal registration. That is:
1. A fully completed and signed registration form to be downloaded and printed from the EUR website;
2. A valid passport or valid identity card, and a hard copy thereof;
3. An original and a hard copy of a filled in and undersigned tenancy agreement or rental contract (provided by your landlord) which was signed less than three months ago. Only in case he is sub-renting: the original and a hard copy of a filled in and undersigned declaration by the main occupant.
4. Her long stay visa (MVV) or IND approval letter (downloaded from Osiris) (non-EU/EEA students only) [original and hardcopy!]
5. If applicable: A copy of passport or ID from the main occupant of the apartment.
To register at City Hall at the One Stop Shops, Jane needs to register on the website ( as she cannot just drop by randomly. The EURs’ website shows the exact dates and locations of where the One Stop Shops will be held.
Good luck and see you there Jane!
