Old Town & Harbor Tour | Dubrovnik Croatia
Dubrovnik Old Town City Harbor
Dubrovnikin vanhan kaupungin muurien varjossa on vilkas satama, josta lähtee risteilyveneitä ja pieniä laivoja läheisille saarille.
One of the oldest sectors of Dubrovnik was constructed around a Late Antique castle by the sea, which stretched landwards a bit more than it does today. It was constructed on the site of the Pre-Romanesque cathedral and the Rector's Palace, thus encircling the city's harbour. The harbour was designed and constructed by engineer Paskoje Miličević in the late 15th century. Notably, the harbour was noticeably painted on the palm of St. Blaise in a triptych painted by the artist Nikola Božidarević around 1500.
The most prominent portion of the harbour are the three enormous arches (the fourth original arch was walled in) of a large arsenal built in the late 12th century and enlarged in the latter part 15th century. The harbour is also the oldest shipyard within the city and is still in use today.
Porporela was built in 1873, next to St. John Fortress. The Kase jetty (Kaše Breakwater) was built in 1485, according to the design of Paskoje Miličević, in order to defend the harbour and protect it from south-eastern winds and waves. The breakwater thus shortened the harbour's bulky chain stretched in the night from the St. John Fortress to St. Luke's tower. It was constructed of huge stone blocks laid over wooden foundations without binder.
Today, the arsenal hosts the City Café and a movie theatre, whereas both the harbour and Porporela have become pleasant promenades and tourist attractions.
Port of Dubrovnik and Gruž Harbor Area
The port of Dubrovnik is situated in the area of Gruz. It is a mainstay on Eastern Mediterranean cruise itineraries, sprinkled among greatest-hits stops like Athens, Venice and so many Greek Isles. Most Eastern Mediterranean cruises set sail from spring through fall, though winter cruising is gaining popularity.
There is a long pier that can accommodated multiple ships at once. Shuttles may be provided to Dubrovnik or you can walk (35 min), take a public bus, or a taxi (approx €10-15). Since Gruz is a ferry and bus terminus also, you will find many facilities and options for getting to old town. Some cruise ships anchor and tender directly to the old town. Port schedule available here h
Gruž (Italian: Gravosa) (also called St. Croce) is a modern-day neighborhood in the greater city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. The main port for Dubrovnik is in Gruž as well as its largest market and the main bus station Libertas. Around 15,000 people currently live in Gruž. While historically a manufacturing and industrial base for Dubrovnik, these days, the primarily residential neighborhood is about 2 km northwest of the more famous Old City.
From the 13th century and greatly through the 16th, Gruž was a far more separate town from Dubrovnik that provided a summer retreat for the inhabitants of the Republic of Ragusa. The shores, like those of Ombla, are populated with a great many stone homes and former summer palaces that are surrounded by cultivated grounds.
Starting in December, 1920, Gruž was the terminus point for the now defunct Dubrovnik tram that ceased running in 1970 following a deadly accident where the tram slipped off its rails and landed in the park in front of Pile Gate. The line has since been replaced by bus routes.
Located in a naturally protected bay, the port is able to accommodate large passenger cruise ships. Ferries run from the port to the Elaphiti Islands and Mljet regularly. There is also a customs building for ferries that are international arrivals, specifically from Bari.
Gruž sits right at the entrance to Port Ombla. It is directly across the water from Cantafigo point, which lacks anchorage points due to the shores and the bottom of the inlet being immersed by banks of mud, deposited during heavy rains. Vessels belonging to Dubrovnik spend their winters at Gruž. Violent squalls descend from the highlands bring the cold, northerly bora, but the waters in the bay of Gruž remain calm.

Dubrovnik, Croatia / Perle der Adria, Kroatien - harbour tour with sailer
Dubrovnik, Croatia, was a trade power in the middle ages. An earthquake 1667 destroyed the city, but the massive city walls resisted and are still visible today. Even the war in 1991 couldn't crush them. Today, Dubrovnik is a famous tourist sight with attractions from many different centuries.

Having a look around the walled harbour in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It was dark and my camera wasn't the best, but I hope you could still see some of the splendour. I especially like the lights from residential houses which can be seen from atop the hill.
Dubrovnik, Croatia- Old Harbor
The Old Harbor of Dubrovnik is full of action. Boats come and go, and passengers from the big cruise ships arrive to see the amazing old walled city on the Adriatic. It's very easy to fall in love with Dubrovnik!

Dubrovnik, Croatia Exploring Croatia's Wonder City
Dubrovnik definitely lives up to it's billing as one of the world's top travel destinations. We got to Croatia's wonder city in the heart of fall which actually meant that we basically had Dubrovnik all to ourselves. Well throughout much of the year Dubrovnik, and Croatia in general, is swarmed with tourists and a mass number of cruise ships, this time of year it's really quiet. It was incredibly nice having the old town all tow ourselves. As you can probably see from the footage, Dubrovnik is actually quite peaceful this time of year.
On our visit to the city, we wandered through the old town, hiked around the city wall, and did quite a bit of photography. I also did a lot of time lapse footage of Dubrovnik to tie it all together I hope you like it.
