LEAD IN:
Sometimes referred to as the Siberian Shangri-la, the Russian region of Tuva is both remote and mysterious.
North of Mongolia and surrounded by mountains, after centuries of isolation, Tuva is now being explored by the rest of the world.
STORYLINE:
Tuva is one of 20 republics of the Russian Federation.
The size of Florida, only 300-thousand or so people live in this land of high plains and valleys surrounded by mountain peaks.
The Tuvan people are rightly proud of their Scythian ancestors, whose horses thundered across the Siberian steppe 2,700 years ago.
The Tuvans themselves are just as capable horsemen.
To celebrate the opening of the Arzhan-2 museum a day of traditional Tuvan sports was held in the valley.
Arzhan-2 is an undisturbed royal burial site dating from the Scythian period.
Two races were held - one 15 kilometre ( 9 mile) race for horses under 3 years old and a 25 kilometre (15.5 mile) race for older horses.
Historically Tuvans led a nomadic way of life, moving on horses from one settlement to another and the natural conditions of the republic are perfect for horse riding.
But Arzhan-2 was made entirely of stone.

Stalingrad Battle Museum - Volgograd (Time Lapse)
Time Lapse video of the Stalingrad Battle museum in the city of Volgograd
Stalingrad-Volgograd. They do remember.
Volgograd is a beautiful city,it was almost totally destroyed during the battle of Stalingrad (the cities previous name) in 1942/43. The battle lasted for 200days and was one of the turning points of WW2. Mamayev Kurgan and the Panorama museum tell the story of those 200days.From the bottom to the top of the hill are 200steps but if you you are unable to climb the steps there is vehicle access at the rear with a short level walk to the statue of Mother Russia, you can then descend past the statues and lakes of tears to the bottom. It is a very moving experience. The Panorama museum is also worth a visit and has special exhibits such as Vasili Zaitsevs rifle and the sword of Stalingrad. Throughout the city are other places of rememberance and interest. One sad omission is the fountain of children dancing around a crocodile, it was modelled on a poem by Corny Chukovskiy called 'children don't go walking in Africa'. It once stood infront of the railway station but was removed and never replaced when the area was rebuilt......The label of Gen. Gregori Chuikov should read Gen. Vasili Gregorovich Chuikov....Sorry for the wobbles, I think I need a tripod.

Stalingrad Now
Mamayev kurgan used to be a nameless hill marked on military-topographic maps as a height - 102,0. This hill was the main link in the general system of defence of Stalingrad front. Murom is a historical city in Vladimir Oblast, Russia, situated on the River Oka. The Primary Chronicle ( Повѣсть времѧньныхъ лѣтъ) mentions the settlement as early as 862. It is, thus, one of the oldest cities in Russia. In 900 CE, Murom was an important trading post from the Volga Bulgaria ( or also known as Volga-Kama Bulghar, a state that existed between the 7th - 13th centuries at the confluence of the Volga and Kama Rivers )to the Baltic Sea.
Between 1010 and 1393, it was the capital of a separate principality, whose rulers included Saint Gleb, assassinated in 1015 and canonized in 1071.

Mamayev Kurgan (Мамаев курган) Volgograd Tours - Wolgograd Victory Day Parade #Volgograd
Mamayev Kurgan (Russian: Мамаев курган) is a dominant height overlooking the city of Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) in Southern Russia. The name in Russian means tumulus of Mamai. The formation is dominated by a memorial complex commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad (August 1942 to February 1943). The battle, a hard-fought Soviet victory over Axis forces on the Eastern front of World War II, arguably turned into the bloodiest battle in human history. At the time of its installation in 1967 the statue named The Motherland Calls on Mamayev Kurgan formed the largest free-standing sculpture in the world as of 2016 it is the tallest sculpture of a woman in the world.
After the war, the Soviet authorities commissioned the enormous Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex. Vasily Chuikov, who led Soviet forces at Stalingrad, lies buried at Mamayev Kurgan, the first Marshal of the Soviet Union to be buried outside Moscow. Soviet sniper Vasily Zaytsev was also reburied there in 2006.
The monumental memorial was constructed between 1959 and 1967, and is crowned by a huge allegorical statue of the Motherland on the top of the hill. The monument, designed by Yevgeny Vuchetich, has the full name The Motherland Calls! (Russian: Родина-мать зовёт! Rodina Mat Zovyot!). It consists of a concrete sculpture, 52 metres tall, and 82 metres from the feet to the tip of the 27-metre sword, dominating the skyline of the city of Stalingrad (later renamed Volgograd).
The construction uses concrete, except for the stainless-steel blade of the sword, and is held on its plinth solely by its own weight. The statue is evocative of classical Greek representations of Nike, in particular the flowing drapery, similar to that of the Nike of Samothrace.
Visit Wolgograd formerly known as Stalingrad - We will join the Victory Day Parade in Wolgograd and celebrate 9th of May with the locals. We also going to see the war memorials and war cemetery.
Join us on a wonderful history tour to Russia and Russian culture.
The celebration of Victory Day continued during subsequent years. The war became a topic of great importance in cinema, literature, history lessons at school, the mass media, and the arts. The ritual of the celebration gradually obtained a distinctive character with a number of similar elements: ceremonial meetings, speeches, lectures, receptions and fireworks.
In 2015 around 30 leaders, including those of China and India, attended the 2015 celebration, while Western leaders boycotted the ceremonies because of the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.
