MUSEUMS AND RUINS - MERIDA, MEXICO
Merida is the home of the Mundo del Maya Museo (or the big honking Mayan Museum) which also has ample air-conditioning and is a sweet little nip out of the heat of the city. There are also plenty of contemporary art galleries on the main park - all with free entry and a sweet little walking tour that meets daily at 9:30AM on the square for a bilingual history of the town. Also free.
After beaching in Tulum and Playa and Holbox it was really nice to get back to some city things - like art and history and brain stimulation.

Merida Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Mérida – Welcome to the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. While much of the peninsula is famed for its resorts, Mérida is the epicentre of Yucatan culture, history and pride.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Mérida:
The peaceful paradise, #Mérida, features a blend of colonial houses and Mayan ruins between which the city shares its heritage. Begin your #vacation at Plaza Grande and #explore the surrounding pastel streets filled with architectural treasures and cool parks.
Mérida’s many museums cover everything from Yucatan song to the folk arts of Mexico. The Museum of The City of Mérida charts the rich and sometimes turbulent history of Yucatan’s capital. #Visit the Yucatan’s Anthropology and History Museum and nearby, the Great Museum of the Mayan World which creates a striking contrast to Mérida’s historic streetscapes.
Mérida is surrounded by ancient Mayan cities such as Dzibilchaltun, Mayapan, Uxmal, and Chichén Itza. The Yucatan Peninsula has an incredible network of over 6000 cenotes. Some, such as the Sacred Cenote of Chichén Itza, were considered portals to the afterlife.
Mérida is undoubtedly one of the coolest and most cultural cities in Mexico.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

Merida Mexico City Tour - Hidden Gems, Yucatan Food and More… | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids
Welcome to Merida which is a truly beautiful travel destination, inside and out.
Nicknamed the ciudad blanca (white city), you certainly do see some white structures while roaming around the grid-like streets of this charming colonial city. Yet we find that the white buildings are actually outnumbered by colorful pastel architecture, adding much vibrancy to Merida’s colonial look.
But it’s Merida’s culture that shines through even brighter. Perhaps that helps to explain why Merida is the only city that has been twice selected to serve as the American Capital of Culture (2000, 2017). You can find culture oozing all throughout Merida, whether admiring ancient Mayan artwork at a museum or simply soaking in the local culture that’s abundant within the swinging doors of Merida’s cantinas. The many cultural things to do in Merida and even the city’s daily cultural events are a big appeal to Yucatan’s largest city.
Here's some of the things you can do while visiting Merida:
- Take the Free Walking Tour
- Discover the Mayan World at the Gran Museo de Mundo Maya Merida
- Wander through the Lucas de Galvez Market Merida
- Attend One Of Merida’s Annual Festivals
- Experience Pok a Pok: Representation of the Mayan Ball Game
- Cruise the Famed Paseo de Montejo, Merida
- Explore Merida by Horse & Carriage
- Relax & Connect Among Mexico’s Most Pleasant Plazas
- Discover Local Yucatan Cuisine in Merida.
We did this at the Merida Mansion and it was a great cultural experience!

MAYAN RUINS OF DZIBILCHALTHUN- MERIDA, MEXICO
Dzibichalthun (zee-bee-shell-tune) is a little town with a denote and ruin and a Mayan museum about 30 minutes from Merida by collectivo. We went to check it out with some friends. The cenote was closed to our chagrin, but the rest was amazing. We capped it all off with an ice cream back in town.
Soho Art Gallery ~ Merida, Mexico
I love Merida, Mexico. I've been here now for almost 4 months and there is a lot to take in.
In this episode, I share a gallery that is just around the corner from me that did a charity event. The owner, Adele was warm and welcoming as she saw my new face come into her gallery.
There is something to do pretty much every single night in this city and much of it is free in the parks around town. The city is beautiful and safe. Touted as one of the safest cities in Mexico and I can vouch for that. I love it here and the weather ain't bad either lol

Paseo de Montejo is a notable avenue of Mérida, México. It is named after Francisco de Montejo, the Spanish conquistador who founded the city in 1542, and is the location of some of the most iconic buildings and monuments of the city. Inspired by the French boulevard, the avenue is flanked by trees and has several roundabouts along its course. Many beautiful mansions were built along the avenue by wealthy Yucatecans of the 19th century.
It extends north from the city center (the Santa Ana District) and connects into highway 231 just south of the Mayan Museum (Gran Museo Maya). Its length of over 6 km makes it one of the longest avenues of the city.
Mérida is the capital and largest city in Yucatan state in Mexico, as well as the largest city of the Yucatán Peninsula. The city is located in the northwest part of the state, about 35 kilometres (22 miles) off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. According to the 2015 census, the population of Mérida was 892,363, ranking 14th among the most populous Mexican cities.
It is an imposing monument, fourteen meters high, the work of the Colombian sculptor Rómulo Rozo, located in one of the roundabouts of Paseo Montejo, at the junction with Campo Deportivo Avenue and it is, without a doubt, one of the monuments most emblematic of the contemporary Mérida.
Monument to the Fatherland is considered an example of neoindigenist or neomaya architecture and consists of an imposing stone monolith in the shape of a hemicycle that occupies a quarter of a hectare, sculpted in its relief to tell key moments of the history of the Mexican nation, from the time pre-Hispanic and until the first decades of the twentieth century, and even the history of the State of Yucatan in particular. In it, stone, water, fire and metal merge. It is said to be the only monument that was carved in stone directly into the world in the 20th century.
The works began in 1945 and was inaugurated on April 15, 1956. Worked in quarry stone, it evokes representative facts of Mexican history: the colony, independence, reform and revolution. The origin of the work is somewhat uncertain, since it is said that it was the result of a contest organized by the then University of Yucatan to make a monument to the flag, a project that in the hands of the master Rozo evolved to what we now know.
It consists of a central semicircle with two ramps, a staircase and a fountain, with a total external diameter that reaches 40 meters. On the facade of the monument facing north, in the lower concave part, there is a water mirror with a stone parapet that imitates Lake Texcoco, with a reproduction of the events that gave rise to the national emblem: an eagle fighting against a snake, on a cactus, symbol of the foundation of Tenochtitlán, the origin of the Aztec culture. In this part of the façade and around it, the monument shows the shields of the 31 States of the Republic and that of the Federal District.
Gonzalo Guerrero was a Spanish sailor and one of the first Europeans to settle in sine of an indigenous culture. He dies fighting against the Spanish conquerors under Pedro de Alvarado . Controversial character because he was acculturated and became a Mayan chief during the conquest of Yucatan, especially war against the conquerors, for what was known as El Renegado by his Spanish compatriots, while in Mexico they call him Father of Miscegenation

Museum Peon Contreras, Dos Mundos by Carina Dumais. Merida, Mexico. 2010
In preparation for this exhibition I went to Mexico (October 2009). I kept two conferences, where the plans for the exhibition are presented, including an explanation of my work, the theme of the exhibition, and the techniques I use.
Additionally, I started my research into the Mayan culture, the traditions and their integration at this time. I used, inter alia, through photography, heard the stories and observed the customs and rituals of the contemporary Maya. The end of the Mayan calendar in 2012 today attracts worldwide attention. This creates a confusing picture in which legends of past and present are playing a role. Is the future a new culture, and what shapes and stories may all think? This I have studied and incorporated into my Art.
All models in my art are real Maya people I've photographed in Merida.

Merida Yucatan Mexico: Down Town video
Merida Yucatan Mexico: Down Town HD video:
The current Governmental Palace was preceded by the Casas Reales or Royal Houses, which were seat to the colonial government. Administrative and government business was carried out there, but it also served as home to the Crown representatives and governors. It was named Palacio de Gobierno after the Independence. As the XIXth century came to a close the old building was destroyed and a new one was erected. It was inaugurated on September 15th, 1892. It was supposed to house all offices pertaining to the executive power. The neoclassic Palacio is two stories high and extends over a quadrangular surface of a little over 137 feet, front and depth. Inside, a central courtyard of great dimensions stands out. It also has 27 murals that were painted between 1971 and 1978 by yucatecan artist Fernando Castro Pacheco. These are distributed in both floors, in the corridors, the Salón de la Historia and the stairwell, and are considered the most important modern pictoric work in Yucatán because of their content and skill. The Governmental Palace is not only a real museum but also sums up the political life of the state.
Iglesia Catedral
It was built 19 years after the founding of Mérida, in 1561, when king Felipe II requested the capital's church be set up as cathedral and assigned to San IIdelfonso, archbishop of Toledo. It became the first cathedral in America built on solid ground. The architectural style is Moorish, for the towers and inside; the façade is Renaissance. It has baroque altarpieces on some walls. Its sober façade has a semicircular arch where the main door Puerta del Perdón or Foregiveness Gate is located. It is flanked by statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The clockwork for the enormous clock was built in London (1731). It told time until 1871.
Casa de Montejo
Following his father's orders, Francisco de Montejo y León El Mozo had this house built between 1543 and 1549. It was to become this conquering family's dwelling place. Its façade, the only part of the house that hasn't been altered, is considered the most valuable jewel of architectural Plateresque art in the country. Cut in stone, the original statues of figures and mythological beings catch the eye.
Plaza Grande
To get acquainted with Mérida you must start at the Plaza Grande. For over three centuries, the Plaza Grande (as locals call it) has been the heart where the city's political, ecclesiastical and civilian life beats. Even though it is a silent witness to the history that has been written around it, important events have taken place at this square, such as the execution of indigenous leader Jacinto Canek and the federalist's combats.
Palacio Municipal
City Hall was built during Santiago Aguirre's term in office (1734-1736). Here is where the Independence of Yucatán from Spain was decided, and where the public holidays of 16 de Septiembre and 5 de Mayo were celebrated until 1892, when the modern Governmental Palace was inaugurated. Its façade has been modified several times in the course of the years. For example, in 1871 the first clock in Mérida was placed here. The oldest coat of arms of the city, which once adorned the eastern wall of Ciudadela de San Benito, that no longer exists, is fitted on the wall by the staircase. The elevated courtyard at the back is what remains of the Mayan pyramid of Bakluum-Chaam.
