Paleokastritsa is one of the most popular resorts of Corfu, situated on the west coast of the island. It is located about 30 km from the capital Corfu Town, surrounded by green hills on the background of brilliant blue sea. It is considered to be the most beautiful resort of Corfu. It consists of six different bays and beaches with crystal blue sea water. Situated aobove, on the mountain, Bella Vista belvedere point overlooks the famous Paleokastritsa resort view with its magnificent bays and the famous monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Above the main coast on a hillside full of wild trees and olive trees facing the deep blue sea stand this monastery who was built around 12th century. Inside there are a museum with Byzantine and post Byzantine icons. Outside the monastery, a canon is still preserved bearing the coat of Arms of Romanof (Romanov), probably since the 1799 from the short presence of Russians.
Paleokastritsa is chiefly memorable for the exceptional scenery along with the superb beaches. You can swim at six different secluded sand and fine pebble beach enclosed by tall cliffs, wooded headlands, olive groves, lemon and cypress trees and lush hilly countryside. Favourite walks are up to the promontory farthest west to find the charming Paleokastritsa monastery. You can reach on foot Agios Spyridon Bay with its immense beach, or by water-taxi. There are plenty of boat trips from Paleokastritsa beaches, the most famous being the Yellow Submarine and Nautilus, boats in which can be see the underwater world. Add variety to holidays in Paleokastritsa by visiting Lakones and other hillside villages, where you will find quiet traditional Corfu charm and memorable country taverns. The rock in the sea visible near the horizon is considered to be the mythical petrified ship of Odysseus. Enjoy a great holiday...
Corfu City - part 1 / Πόλη της Κέρκυρας
Corfu is a city and a former municipality on the island of Corfu, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality of Corfu island. It is the capital of the island and of the Corfu regional unit. The city also serves as a capital for the region of the Ionian Islands. The city (population 24,838 in 2011) is a major tourist attraction, and has played an important role since antiquity. The ancient city of Corfu, known as Korkyra, took part in the Battle of Sybota which was a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War, and, according to Thucydides, the largest naval battle between Greek city states until that time. Thucydides also reports that Korkyra was one of the three great naval powers of fifth century BC Greece, along with Athens and Corinth.Medieval castles punctuating strategic locations across the city are a legacy of struggles in the Middle Ages against invasions by pirates and the Ottomans. The city has become known since the Middle Ages as Kastropolis (Castle City) because of its two castles. From 1386 to 1797, Corfu was ruled by Venetian nobility; much of the city reflects this era when the island belonged to the Republic of Venice, with multi-storied buildings on narrow lanes. The Old Town of Corfu has clear Venetian influence. The city was subjected to four notable sieges in 1537, 1571, 1573 and 1716, in which the strength of the city defenses asserted itself time after time, mainly because of the effectiveness of the powerful Venetian fortifications. Will Durant claimed that Corfu owed to the Republic of Venice the fact that it was the only part of Greece never conquered by the Ottomans.

Corfu, Greece - Corfu Town - AtlasVisual
Corfu Video Map:
Corfu town is Venice and Naples, a touch of France and more than a dash of England, apart of course from being Greek' - Countess Flamburiari. This quote perfectly describes Corfu Town. Throughout Corfu's history, it was under Italian, French and English rule. The town today reflects that history in amazingly varied architecture, beautiful squares, statues, a fortress and a palace. It is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Greece.
The Liston Esplanade is the central square of Corfu Town and the largest square in the Balkans. It became a public square under French rule, and it resembles a flower filled French garden today. It is surrounded by beautiful buildings, inspired by the Rue do Rivoli in Paris. You will find the most luxurious cafes and shopping around the square. Also bordering the square is the fortress. It was built between the 6th and 19th centuries. Today, one of the buildings in the center of the fortress is a music school -- there are nightly concerts held here during the summer.
Other notable sights are: the Town Hall Square, the Square of the Saints, the Ionian Academy and the Palace of Saint Michael & Saint George. The neighborhoods of Kanoni (ruins of the ancient city are found here) and Mandouki are also great places to wander around.

A video tour of Corfu Town and the South of Corfu from The Greek Islands Club
Our visit to the South of Corfu begins as the plane approaches the runway over one of Corfu's most famous landmarks; the tiny islet of Pontokonisi which sits adjacent to Vlaherna, with it's tiny 12th centaury church and surly one of the island most photographed views. After a short tour of some of the sights located around the centre of Corfu town, with its narrow streets and elegant café's we head south a few kilometres to the Achileon Palace built in 1892 Elisabeth von Wiltelsbach, Empress of Austria. The Place was bought in 1907 by Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany and on the coastal road to our next destination; you will see the distinctive Kaiser Bridge as you leave the area of Perama.
The Village of Moraitika and its less developed neighbour Mesongi can be found as the road clings to the waters edge just before the road bears right and heads inland. Most of Moraiticas bars and Tavernas line the main road whilst quieter spots can be found on the road which lead down to Moraitikas sandy beach. A small river divides the two villages, which is home to a fleet of fishing boats. Mesongi has a much more laid back atmosphere and a right hand turn at the mouth of the river will lead you along the beach front which becomes increasingly quiet the further South you get.
At the opposite side of the island can be found one f the most unspoilt areas Corfu has to offer. Halikounis (or Chalikounis) beach is quiet most of the season and forms a barrier between the sea and the Korison Lake, which stretches down to our next destination of St Georges South.
Not to be confused with the three other costal villages of the same name, this one is the most southerly (if you discount the one new Kavos) and has three distinctively different beach areas. As you enter the village, turn left to find a narrow sandy beach backed by cliffs and the odd Taverna. Back past the church and the harbour, the beach becomes wider and busier before widening out as it heads back towards Halikounis. Just a short walk from the car parking will provide you with your own piece of beach.
Our visit finishes with the more northerly Agios Gordis, which can be found around a half hour drive from Corfu town. Unusually the village has no coast road but has a boardwalk stretching of either side of the small beach side parking area. Tavernas and bars can be found overlooking the beach, which are backed by outstanding rock formations. Sit back, and watch some of the best sunsets available from Corfu
