Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is the center of Chile's largest and the most densely populated conurbation. The city is entirely located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706 ft) above sea level.
Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

Huffington Post:
Capital city of Chile, Santiago is a place that took me by surprise. In regards to capital cities in South America, I have heard people rave about the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, but rarely about Santiago, the capital of Chile. My travels in Chile took me from the coast, inland to Santiago and prior to arriving in Santiago, I had another mishap when withdrawing money and was moping my way into Santiago. Upon leaving the bus terminal in Santiago, I was impressed initially with the towering, impressive old structures, and enormous avenues of Chile's capital city. Checked into a great hostel in the Yungay, Brasil area of Santiago and went exploring.
Travels through Chile:
First day, I met up with a friend and we went to do one of the best things to do in Santiago, Chile, and that is to get above the city and see the incredible view and mountains via San Cristobal Hill. In Spanish, Cerro San Cristobal is one of the big mounds in the center of Santiago Chile and you can walk the incline path to the top for a warm, but gentle hike.
The Coast of Chile:
From the top of Cerro San Cristobal, you get an amazing view over all of Santiago including the other cerro, Santa Lucia.

Trekking Chile – Cerro Provincia 2,750 m/ 9,022 ft in a day - Mars Bars needed!
It was a big surprise to find Cerro Provincia - a fully-fledged 2,750 m/ 9,022 ft mountain - sitting on the doorstep of Chile's vibrant modern Capital City - Santiago. Santiago sits in a basin surrounded by the Chilean Andes and Coastal Range so it should not really be a surprise. What was great was how close and accessible these mountains are in terms of getting there, and their scale. They are large without being intimidating.
Many hikes in South America start around 3,000 metres and require altitude acclimatisation. Happily, Cerro Provincia does not, loaning itself to a more casual climb. Preparation is still key. Mountains deserve respect. Do your research on local conditions and pack accordingly. Here water is in short supply and overnight temperatures at the summit, in summer, can nudge zero.
Cerro Provincia is an ideal day, or weekend Hike. It's a big day out - over 2,000 m of total ascent, depending on the trail you select. If you are fit you can pop up for the day and be back in time for a typically late South American dinner - the thought of the fabulous food, and superb Chilean wine, keep you focused at the end of the long day.
And then there's the shopping! Santiago caters to all budgets - the local artesanal jewllery is fabulous, So, head thee to Santiago for a Chliean tasting platter - hiking, food, wine and shopping.

Santiago, Chile and surroundings Music Tour - Unravel Travel TV
Chile is a long, narrow country that extends from the Andes Mountains to the Pacific Ocean on the southwest side of South America, from latitude 17° 30' S in the Altiplano to 56° 30' S at the far end of continental Chile and 90° S in its Antarctic territory.
Chile has a unique geography: its territory includes Easter Island, in Polynesia, 3,700 km from the mainland, as well as territory in Antarctica (Chile Antártico, 1,250,000 km2). Continental and insular Chile, which includes the mainland and offshore islands and archipelagos, covers 756,096 km2.
Chile's main territory is roughly twice the size of Germany and consists of a strip of land 4,200 km long and 90 to 440 km wide. In the far south, the land is transected by hundreds of islands and fiords.
Santiago is the country's capital and largest city in terms of population and employment, with 6,061,185 inhabitants as of the 2002 census. Located on parallel 33° S, at roughly the same latitude as Buenos Aires and Montevideo, Santiago is the country's main political, economic, cultural and industrial center. It is the gateway to Chile and one of the most modern capital cities on the continent.

Alternative City-Tour in Santiago de Chile...
We have changed our name to CITY TREKKING GUIDE !!!
If you are looking for an exceptional tour through the city of Santiago de Chile, meeting the chilean culture, this is where you'll find it.
Come and experience the real spirit of life in the capital of Chile !!
You'll see very typical places as well as some more common sights by ambling down the streets and using the same public transportation as the natives.
Ultimate Chile Trip - Patagonia W Trek, Valparaiso, Elqui Valley and Atacama Desert
Our big adventure starts in the south with the W Trek in Patagonia and finishes in the north with a tour of the world's most sophisticated telescope, the VLT. In between, we visit the colourful city of Valparaiso to stay in a shipping container, Pisco Elqui, the birthplace of the brandy called Pisco and San Pedro De Atacama where a rain storm wiped out the road and caused a state of emergency.
Themes of nature, stars abound in this country so as an alternative to San Pedro De Atacama we went to see the hand of the Desert outside of Antofagasta and watched the stars in a dark sky reserve.
The stars in the Atacama are different from anywhere else we have seen them, they feel close like you can touch them. It's an amazing experience and worth traveling to Chile for!

What to visit in Santiago
Visit Santiago is a part of the
#patagonia #trip : a #travel video through #argentinia and #chile
5 October 2017
Our Patagonia Trip started in #Santiago. I know Santiago is not part of Patagonia. However we had to pick up the mobile home in Santiago.
After landing on the Santiago Airport and reaching our hotel we had half a day to spend in Santiago. We decided to walk to the center of Santiago. Walking is a good way to visit Santiago. Santiago counts 4 million citizens, but the highlights are reachable by foot.
After an excellent lunch in a local restaurant we walked to the Centre Gabriela Mistral. Most of the people think that it is an ugly building. So do I. Via the Av Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins we reached the Plaza Vicuña Mackenna. You may climb the Cerro Santa Lucia to have a nice view over Santiago. We didn’t.
We walked through some car free streets to the Plaza de Armas. On the Plaza de Armas is a lot of activity what is really nice to see. You also find the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago at the Plaza de Armas. We did not enter the #Cathedral but continued to the Mercado Central. A market is always a highlight to visit in a city, so also in Santiago.
On our way back we entered the Catedral Metropolitana de Santiago at the Plaza de Armas. For us, it was enough Santiago. We walked back to the hotel and had a dinner on a roof terrace with an excellent view on Santiago and the Andes mountains.
