Cyrene (Libya) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Cyrene in Libya.
Cyrene, or, the ‘Athens of Africa’, is an ancient city on the slopes of the green mountain of Kyrenaika, a coastal region in eastern Libya.A kind of natural canyon connects the lower city with the upper city that originated later. In the rock walls of the canyons, on the same level as the lower city, are a number of well preserved caves in which the Greeks had their baths. These bathing places contained niches and annexes and were supplied with water by the Apollon Spring. The Forum became the centre of city life, built above a Greek agora and surrounded by temples and monuments. Like that of the Greek Ship Monument that was erected following a successful battle at sea, with the winged goddess of victory, Nike, on the bow of a stone ship. The ruins of Cyrene have survived for thousands of years and continue to fascinate with all the intriguing mystique of antiquity.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain

Libya Commentary 7: Shahhat (Cyrene)
In his seventh installment, filmmaker Matthew Millan travels to the spectacular ancient city of Cyrene, bordering the modern town of Shahat. Cyrene was founded by Greek settlers in the 5th century BCE, and quickly became one of the greatest centers of philosophy in North Africa. The city and the surrounding territory was officially transformed into a Roman province by 74 BCE. It would stay an important urban center until 272 CE when an earthquake severely damaged it. After the earthquake, the city declined until it was completely abandoned by the 4th century CE.
Once an absolutely beautiful site, it has sadly become neglected over the years. Trash litters the once lush fountains, and statues have long since been vandalized, their heads removed by various groups, from the Ottomans to the Italians.
Still these ruins are some of the best and most extensive in the Classical World. It is my sincere hope that one day soon they can be restored and preserved, for the belong not just to the Libyan people, but to the whole of humanity.

LIBYA - The hidden Treasures - Archaeological Site of Sabratha
EMAD TV
presents
LIBYA - The Hidden Treasures -
Archaeological Site of Sabratha.
It lies on the Mediterranean coast about 65km west of Tripoli.
The extant archaeological site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
Sabratha's port was established, perhaps about 500 BC, as a Phoenician trading-post that served as a coastal outlet for the products of the African hinterland.
Sabratha became part of the short-lived Numidian Kingdom of Massinissa before being Romanized and rebuilt in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.
The Emperor Septimus Severus was born nearby in Leptis Magna, and Sabratha reached its monumental peak during the rule of the Severans.
The city was badly damaged by earthquakes during the 4th century, particularly the quake of AD 365.
It was rebuilt on a more modest scale by Byzantine governors.
Within a hundred years of the Arab conquest of the maghreb, trade had shifted to other ports and Sabratha dwindled to a village.
