Newcastle 500: Your guide to Family Friendly Supercar events

Circus workshops, pushcart races and giant inflatables are just some of the great things happening for families in Hunter Street Mall and Civic Park over the Supercars Newcastle 500 weekend!

The family-friendly events are part of the ‘Enjoy Newcastle’ program, supported by the City of Newcastle, to create a festival atmosphere for all experience in the city centre.

Beginning on Thursday 21 November at Civic Park, with all 26 Supercars drivers on hand for a signing event, and a live broadcast of “Trackside” on Fox Sports.

These free activities are a great opportunity for locals to see what’s on offer in the Mall and for event-goers to step outside the precinct and get a taste of local life.

In Civic Park you’ll find a super-sized Newcastle-themed Monopoly board, a monster truck slide, jumping castles, obstacle course and an auto-race simulator. There’s also a dedicated under-six years play area and an adrenalin-rush obstacle course suited to both big kids and adults alike.

Coffs Harbour

Coffs Harbour, in Australia, is a coastal city located on the north coast of New South Wales about 540 km (340 mi) north of Sydney, and 390 km (240 mi) south of Brisbane. Its population was 45,580 in 2011 with the greater region having a population of 70,990 in 2012.[3]
Coffs Harbour won an international Bloom award for population 20,001 - 75,000 in 2002.[4] In addition an Enhancement of the Landscape in 2004 from the same organisation.[5] Coffs Harbour's economy was once based mainly on bananas, now being superseded by blueberries as well as tourism and fishing. The wider region is known as the Bananacoast. [6]
The city has a campus of Southern Cross University, a public[7] and a private hospital, several radio stations, and three major shopping centres. Coffs Harbour is near numerous national parks, including a marine national park. There are regular passenger flights each day to Sydney and Melbourne departing from Coffs Harbour Airport.[8] Coffs Harbour is also accessible by road, by NSW TrainLink trains, and by regular bus services.[9]

Coffs Harbour was the hub for a thriving banana industry. One of the biggest attractions is the Big Banana, one of the first of Australia's Big Things (it celebrated its 40th birthday in 2005), with the World's Largest Banana celebrating the region's best known export. There is also a popular underwater diving spot on a small natural reef.[vague]
The Coffs Harbour Jetty is an historically important timber wharf where coastal shipping once moved the timber from the hinterland. The jetty area is the subject of current planning[when?] by Council and consultants to develop a cultural precinct and rejuvenated residential area.
Nearby, the Solitary Islands Marine Park preserves a diverse underwater ecosystem that mirrors the terrestrial biodiversity, covering the southern limit of northern tropical species and the northern limits of the southern temperate species. Muttonbird Island is accessible by walking along the breakwater from the harbour, with the nature reserve protecting a significant wedge-tailed shearwater breeding site. The Muttonbird Island footpath leads to a viewing platform where whales are often spotted between June and November.

The town's water supply comes from the nearby Orara River at Cochranes Pool and is supplemented by the Nymboida River. The city hosts the Coffs Harbour Regional Botanic Garden.

Man stabbed '18 times in 25 seconds' on train

A security camera shows the moment Lee Pomeroy was stabbed 18 times in 25 seconds, on a train from Guildford to London in January.

The Old Bailey sat in silence during the graphic clip of the quick and frenzied attack on a train from Guildford to Waterloo.

The 51-year-old was stabbed by fellow passenger Darren Pencille on 4 January.

Sydney West Fire

Fire crews are battling a large blaze at a factory in Sydney's west.

The blaze started around 9am in Fariola Street, Silverwater, and local crews are attempting to bring it under control.

Plumes of black smoke can be seen from around ten kilometres away. Fire crews may evacuate nearby properties if the blaze spreads.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A NSW Fire Brigades spokesman said the incident is on-going and further updates will follow.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation Presentation 2014

Christmas has come early for 17 charities across regional NSW, each receiving a share of more than $800,000 funding from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation for local community projects.

The charities were formally presented with their cheques today in a special event on the rooftop of Newcastle Permanent.

Charitable Foundation Chairman Michael Slater said many not-for-profit organisations rely on corporate philanthropic support to offer their programs and services to the community and the Charitable Foundation is proud to be able to help make this a reality.

“The real recipients of this funding are the people in need that these charities help; the men, women and children who now have access to services, programs and projects to help improve their lives,” Mr Slater said.

“Locally in the Hunter, this funding will support 11 new community projects and initiatives that focus on community health and wellbeing, youth development and mentoring, social inclusiveness and training and education.

“Christmas is a time to say thanks and the Charitable Foundation would also like to acknowledge the staff and volunteers of these charities who work tirelessly all year to support the more disadvantaged members of our community,” Mr Slater said.

Some of the local charities to receive funding include the Autoimmune Resource and Research Centre, United Hospital Auxiliary – Mater Hospital, Hunter Youth Mentor Collaborative, Family Insight and PCYC Nelson Bay.

Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation distributes more than $1.5 million annually to local not-for-profit organisations in the Hunter, New England, Central West, Central Coast, Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast.

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting from the sudden release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes can range in size from those that are so weak that they cannot be felt to those violent enough to toss people around and destroy whole cities. The seismicity, or seismic activity, of an area is the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time. The word tremor is also used for non-earthquake seismic rumbling.
At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and displacing or disrupting the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides, and occasionally volcanic activity.
In its most general sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic event—whether natural or caused by humans—that generates seismic waves. Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by other events such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests. An earthquake's point of initial rupture is called its focus or hypocenter. The epicenter is the point at ground level directly above the hypocenter.

The goal is that students learn to create sequential graphics that tell a narrative, with children's rights as the theme.
