CRHnews - Listening Bench on Chelmsford's Memory Lane (Laptops/Towers)
ONLY VIEWABLE ON LAPTOP COMPUTERS DUE TO BLUSTERY WINDY CONDITIONS WHICH MESS UP SMARTPHONES
At the capital of Essex where Marconi opened the world's first wireless factory which made SOS equipment for Titanic, the city of Chelmsford has installed its first Listening Bench - thanks to Essex Record Office, and, of course the generous Heritage Lottery Fund.
The solar powered bench plays clips of recordings from the Essex Sound and Video Archive – covering topics such as the First and Second World Wars, shopping, and even a BBC Essex piece on the opening of the Meadows.
The Listening Bench was officially declared open by Beyond the Beehive/Essex Girl and Chelmsford-born author Elizabeth Woodcraft, on a bright, but very blustery Tuesday afternoon, July 18, 2017.
Chelmsford Mayor Cllr Duncan Lumley, was joined on the civic front by Chairman of Essex County Council Cllr John Aldridge, of Writtle, as well as relatives of one of the interviewees featured on the bench.
# The Essex Sound and Video Archive at the Essex Record Office has received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to run our project, You Are Hear: sound and a sense of place.
The project will digitise and catalogue some of the audio and video recordings held in the Archive, and then help people learn about them, engage with them, and enjoy them.
Over the next three years, we will be taking our recordings into every corner of Essex, helping people develop their sense of place by increasing their appreciation for the sounds of the county, past and present.
Want to know more? Sign up to receive updates on the project; read all our blog posts; or get in touch with Sarah-Joy Maddeaux, You Are Hear Project Officer: 033301 32467 or sarahjoy.maddeaux[@]essex.gov.uk

Inspired by the life of Rock legend Marc Bolan, 20th Century Boy is a dazzling stage musical telling the tragic story about one of Britain’s greatest rock stars who tragically died in a car crash just two weeks before his 30th birthday in 1977.
Featuring some of the greatest pop songs ever written, 20th Century Boy tells the story of Marc Bolan and his band T.Rex from his early teens in the sixties in North London, where he was trying anything to be famous, first through fashion and then through his skill as a songwriter, exposing some of the myths and taking the audience on a tearful, yet joyful journey through Marc's fascinating life.
Bolan lived life at breakneck speed and when success came, it was massive, leading to a string of number one hits, an army of obsessive fans and the band to be called ‘bigger than The Beatles’ by the British media.
The musical is packed with 24 of Marc’s legendary hits performed ‘live’ on stage and recreating the awesome sound of the 70s. A glorious story and celebration of glam rock at its colourful best!
Rocker, poet, electric warrior, king of glam and godfather of punk, Bolan was arguably the biggest rock star the UK had ever seen.
Featuring the smash hits; Get It On, Ride A White Swan, Metal Guru, I Love To Boogie, Hot Love, 20th Century Boy and many many more.

CRHnews - Battle of Britain fighter pilot 100 NOT OUT
* Narrated by John 'The Voice' Rhodes, star of stage, screen and spotlight at the Civic Theatre, Chelmsford.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN WAR HERO PILOT, 100, HONOURED WITH SPECIAL BIRTHDAY FLYOVER BY THE RED ARROWS
By Sam Lock for MailOnLine
Published September 20, 2018
Flight Lieutenant Maurice Mounsdon is one of the last surviving heroes of the glorious Few, whose daring and bravery saved Britain from Nazi tyranny.
It's been years since the Battle of Britain war hero has been back in a plane and even longer since he joined the RAF in 1940 as a 20-year-old just before the Second World War.
Now aged 100 - frail and unable to walk unaided - he celebrated the milestone with a nod to his military past as the Red Arrows - elite pilots from the modern age - paid tribute to the former pilot with a spectacular skyline display.
Mr Mounsdon was shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf 109 over Colchester, but not before he had made two confirmed kills of German bombers and fighters, two probable kills and damaged two other fighters.
'I was badly burnt but I rolled the aircraft over and came down by parachute from 14,000ft,' he explained.
