Alishan National Scenic Area (阿里山国家风景区) | Travel Guide
Alishan is world-famous for having “five wonders; and they are Alishan Forest Railway, the forest trail, sunrise, sunset and Sea of clouds. This national park is considered the most representative of Taiwan’s tourist destinations both domestically and globally.
Alishan National Scenic Area also known as Mount Ali. It is a very popular tourist attraction in Taiwan, very famous for the production of high mountain tea and for the iconic sea of clouds.
A vantage spot over 2,600 meters above sea level, way higher than the clouds in fact, is the best place to enjoy these two natural attractions.
You need to wake up at 03:30 a.m. if you want to see the sunrise. Highly recommend you to take about 20 minute to walk to the Mt. Ogasawara Viewing Point小笠原山秘境(2488 above sea level) for better view. The scenery is so unforgettable. The atmosphere of people waiting for sunrise is great.
Alishan Forest Recreation Area is at the 89K point of the Alishan Highway and at the end of the Alishan Mountain Railway. Alishan itself doesn’t have a peak and it is actually composed of 18 mountains such as Jialun Mountain, Zhu Mountain, and Data Mountain etc.
A sea of clouds is an overcast layer of clouds, viewed from above, with a relatively uniform top which shows undulations of very different lengths resembling waves. A sea of fog is formed from stratus clouds or fog and does not show undulations.
In both cases, the phenomenon looks very similar to the open ocean. The comparison is even more complete if some mountain peaks rise above the clouds, thus resembling islands.
Greater Tashan Trail (大塔山) The Greater Tashan is the highest of the Tashan peaks, at 2663 m. Depending on the weather, you will either have a wide vista from the observation platform at the top, or will admire a sea of clouds. A good trail leads up to the peak and takes about 1½-2 hours going up from its entry point nearby the Two Sisters Pond, a bit less going down again. The trail is blissfully free of tour groups due to its medium difficulty, with some quite steep stairs on the way, but it should be doable for anyone in decent walking shape. Bring something to drink and appropriate sun protection, as even if Alishan village is cloudy, the peak can still bask in full sun due to its higher altitude.
The Alishan Sacred Tree is one of the most notable Alishan attractions. The tree is located at the Sacred Tree (Shenmu) Railway Station with an elevation over 2000 meters above sea level. The Sacred Tree is known as Shenmu in Mandarin with an age over 3,000 years. This giant tree and dozens of younger generations of giant trees are one of the top five Alishan must-see sceneries along with sunrise, sunset, forest railway, and sea of clouds.
Ciyun Temple is one of the best places in Alishan to view the cloud sea, the red clouds of evening and the sunset.

Alishan is world-famous for having “five wonders; and they are Alishan Forest Railway, the forest trail, sunrise, sunset and Sea of clouds. This national park is considered the most representative of Taiwan’s tourist destinations both domestically and globally.
The sacred tree is a red cypress which has been guarded by the Tsou for generations, and later widely known during the Japanese colonial period in 1945. The tree is the tallest and the most imposing one in Taiwan with a height of 53 meters, a trunk of 4.66 meters in diameter, and a circumference of 23 meters. The sacred tree was vigor and able to withstand typhoons and earthquakes over the years. However, it was struck by lightning and burned on the inside in 1956. The Forestry Bureau decided to cut and lay the giant tree in 1998 due to its slant in 1997. Nowadays, visitors may see a pavilion built alongside of the sacred tree.
Many Alishan hiking trails will bring you to the Alishan Sacred Tree. Enjoy a healthy forestry journey hiking the sacred tree plank, more than 36 noted giant trees can be seen. Most of them are over 1000 or 2000 years old. Indulge an interesting Alishan travel exploring the age of each giant tree!
Even if breathtaking views are common in Alishan region; these five wonders are still considered the main reason for many travelers to visit Alishan each year.
Ciyun Temple is one of the best places in Alishan to view the cloud sea, the red clouds of evening and the sunset.
From here, Alishan settlement and Tashan can also be seen. The earliest trail from the temple to the sacred tree starts at the temple. Strolling along it at dusk, the sunset glow and the golden cloud sea create a beautiful sight.
The sunset is as stunning as the sunrise and is best viewed on a deck near the Cihyun Temple.

HsinChu Taiwan - an evening POV
HsinChu has been one of my MOST traveled place in Taiwan.
I visit Taiwan, HsinChu to be precise and I am loving it every moment.
Travel to the city of HsinChu with me in this video.
From the minute I arrived at the Tao Yuan Airport, I would take their iconic yellow taxi from Tao Yuan airport all the way to HsinChu city. Along the highway, enjoying every sight and scenery from the taxi.
I would arrive Hsin Chu in the evening and hence you realise this is the video I filmed immediately I got off my luggage into the room, changed out my sneakers and walked out to the street of Hsin Chu. I started off from BeiDa Road where my hotel resides and headed towards DongMen Street where the famous ChengHuang temple resides. That's where all the great local taiwanese food and munchies are aloof everywhere, every corner of HsinChu.
Explore with me in this short video of HsinChu Taiwan ( city walkabout ) and experience real feeling of Taiwan, HsinChu. You will love it as much as I do !
Love the peace and tranquility in this city and just a question, do you love this place too ?
