The clapper bridge crosses the East Dart River and is believed to have been built in the 13th century to enable pack horses to cross the river, carrying tin to the stannary town of Tavistock.
The newer bridge with archways behind was built in the 1780's and is now grade II listed.

Postbridge on Dartmoor Ancient Clapper Bridge

Postbridge is a hamlet in the heart of Dartmoor in the English county of Devon. It is situated on the B3212, between Princetown and Moretonhampstead. On the East Dart river, one of two main tributaries of the River Dart.
Best known for a fine example of an ancient clapper bridge over the river. First recorded in the 14th century, the bridge is believed to have been built in the 13th century to enable pack horses to cross the river, carrying tin to the stannary town of Tavistock. The clapper bridge is still complete, and stands alongside today's structure (in background on video), built in the 1780s.

Postbridge Clapper Bridge
Postbridge Clapper Bridge is a well preserved Medieval clapper bridge across the East Dart River located around the middle of Dartmoor National Park in Devon. It can be found in the village of Postbridge.
The clapper bridge was first recorded in the 14th century however it was probably built in the 13th century. It is thought that Postbridge Clapper Bridge was built so pack horses could cross the East Dart River to carry tin to Tavistock, the stannary town.
A newer bridge, built in 1780, now stands next to the clapper bridge. This new bridge would have originally been an easier crossing for horses but is now used as a bridge for cars. The bridge is part of the B3212, a long road which goes across Dartmoor National Park and beyond from Yelverton to Exeter.
Both bridges are Grade II listed.

The Clapper Bridge, Killeen, Louisburgh
The Bunlahinch clapper bridge.
Near Killeen, Louisburgh, Bunlahinch, County Mayo stands this wonderful prehistoric form of stone bridge. Although this bridge is dated to around the 1840s, this constuction was quite common in pre-historic times. The word Clapper is said to originate in Sussex, England and means plank. Clapper bridges are made from a series of small pillars joined together by stone lintels laid across the top. This bridge is approximately two foot wide and about 150 foot in length.
The name Bunlahinch comes from the Irish Bun na hInse meaning bottom of the river meadow. 27.08.2017
