FAST EDDIE - a short documentary film (2017) by Greig Stott
Short version for my documentary film FAST EDDIE.
** An official selection for the Ironstar International Short Film Festival 2017
WINNER Local Talent Award **
Fast Eddie Lafferty - the harmonica playing busker and well known face on the streets of Dundee, Scotland - has been playing the harmonica since he was 7 years old, nearly 50 years of playing the harp. This is Fast Eddie and the streets are his stage.
Fast Eddie is a tremendously heart warming and inspiring piece of documentary by Greig Stott and I'm so glad it was made to highlight such a pure human being. Eddie, for those that don't know him, is a local treasure in Dundee, busking in the city centre playing his harmonica , he's a staple of the city's positive image and a big part of the community. It's difficult to see - or rather hear before you see - this man without a smile leaking onto your face because he is an inspiring role model and the film showcases his generosity, his story and struggle and the impressive free spirit that he is... After the UK the Future for 4 Nations Mary McGregor RCN at RIC 2013
RIC 2013 conference held a number of workshops including a discussion on after the UK: the future for 4 nations in which 3 speakers led off including Mary McGregor from the RCN and a Dundee RIC member. Prior to her talk on the subject she had to correct a mistake in one of the introductory remarks and said I'm not a member of the Royal College of Nursing, I'm a member of the Republican Communist Network! to the amusement of the workshop participants!
Mary has been politically active for around 40 years and over the course of that time and membership of 3 political parties has changed and developed her views which she sees as a necessary thing for people on the Left to do in the struggle for ideas and the way forward for the Left. You come across people on the left who will stick with the same old shibbolehs and mantras decade in and decade out never changing their thinking even in the light of objective reality. For me this is a distinctly un-Marxist approach. For me there must be two battles fought simultaneously: the battle against our ruling class and capitalism and the battle for ideas amongst ourselves. She supports neither Scottish nor British nationalism but self-determination, republicanism and internationalism. Clearly this is a million miles away from what Salmond has on offer. The politics of the SNP government is just as wedded to capitalism and imperialism as the parties of Westminster. Mary goes on to criticise the SNP's commitment to the continued role of the monarchy and hence the Crown Powers i.e. the monarch's ability to overturn a democratic decision taken in parliament, the Bank of England, NATO etc and lack of will to stand up to pressure from big business and e.g. the recent climbdown over Grangemouth. Not everyone who is an SNP voter or even member necessarily agrees with their leadership. There are quite a lot of left-wing and progressive members of the SNP who see it as a vehicle to first of all get independence to then make it easier to get the progressive Scotland they want and there are plenty of members who are critical of their own leadership. However one conference delegate took offence and heckled Mary who handled the interruption quite generously. Then she continues. She talks about the predictable Westminster scaremongering. She is opposed to both Westminster's imperialist agenda and the SNP leadership's proposals which largely supports the continuance of many of Westminster's policies although she earlier acknowledges that the SNP have made some social democratic reforms but not on the scale that Scotland really needs and its commitment to big business makes it unlikely it would be able to sustain those reforms long term. The SNP Holyrood government's current strategy is designed to develop a wannabe Scottish ruling class in order to seek a Scottish junior managerial buy out within the UK and the current global corporate and US/British imperial order. This is why the SNP's proposals are nor based on genuine political self-determination for Scotland but on winning the minimal powers which would permit the Scottish ruling class to enhance its bargaining position Basically the radical view of independence is that whilst independence is desirable it is not an end in itself and for it to be beneficial you need to get rid of imperialism and the influence of big business, the influence of NATO and the US government, the Crown Powers, the influence of the Bank of England, the City of London, the EU bureaucracy for real Scottish self-determination.
