Why Cuba’s Streets Are Filled With Classic Cars
CUBA: The AMERICAN CLASSIC CARS from the 1950s in HAVANA ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Under dictator Fulgencio Batista in the 1950s, Cuba was a holiday destination for America and the mob and lots of American cars were imported from the US, which is only 90 miles away.
For over 60 years, American economic sanctions made new vehicles virtually unobtainable, which meant that the old Dodges, Chryslers, Fords and Chevrolets from the pre-Castro days are constantly mended and modified to keep them going.
Here's a video of these fabulous classic American cars, most of them battered beyond belief but still plying their trades as cabs on Havana's streets.
Cuba is a Caribbean island nation under communist rule. It has sugar-white beaches and is dotted with tobacco fields, which play a part in the production of the country's legendary cigars. The capital, Havana, is lined with pastel houses, 1950s-era cars and Spanish-colonial architecture in the 16th-century core, Old Havana. Salsa music plays in the dance clubs and cabaret shows are performed at the famed Tropicana.

American Classic Cars in Cuba
Cuba is loaded with Classic American Cars and Boomer Bert of was there in May of 2016 to shoot video and photos of nearly 200 of these beauties! Chevys, Fords, Pontiacs, Buicks, Chryslers, Caddies, Plymouths, Dodges, Studes, Oldsmobiles, and Willys. Even a Kingsway!, an Opel Record and a British built Ford Zephyr.

I visited Havana Cuba this year, and I recorded a lot of video of all those beautiful American Classic Cars driving around in Havana, Cuba. It is a car enthusiast dream over there, to see all those American Muscle Cars driving around in the wild. I made a 5 minute incredible special on Cuba. Catch a short glimpse of the current day Havana, Cuba and the last American cars exported to Cuba -- in the early1960 - beat up, but still running strong! As Detroit automakers battle to survive, their vintage cars in Cuba may outlive them. Lacking access to original car parts Cubans make their own parts or take them from other cars. CUBA: HAVANA: VINTAGE CARS EVENT
Spanish/Italian
Vintage car enthusiasts were in for a treat in the Cuban capital Havana, as some of the capital's finest cars were put on public display.
Havana's Automobile Museum staged a series of events to promote the country's classic cars.
Havana has long been associated with classic cars.
But enthusiasts from around the world were given a rare treat with an outing of some of the city's finest automobilistic examples.
Cars that some would only ever have seen in black and white films were polished and groomed for a display along Havana's sea front.
The owners of the rare examples were all hoping their classics would pass a rigorous series of tests to be allowed to enter a parade from Havana to the city of Varadero.
The event was organised by Havana's Automobile Museum and was aimed at promoting the city's cars.
This man was the lucky owner of one of only five Jaguar Mark 5s that exist on the island.
It was built in 1950.
He found it abandoned in the country and spend two years rebuilding it.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
This car was bought off a person who kept it in the countryside. I worked on it for two years. The reconstruction work has kept as many original features as possible.
SUPER CAPTION: Jorge Gonzalez, Car Owner
Among the crowds who flocked to see the cars were a number of tourists.
This man had come all the way from Italy.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
These cars do not exist in any other part, I've never seen them before. They are superb, and it is a shame for me that they cannot be taken out of Cuba.
SUPER CAPTION: Giorgio, Italian Tourist
The U-S embargo against the island has made the availability of parts for classic cars almost non-existent.
The engines that were at the festivak were for the most part original.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
It is not that they find parts, these parts are the original parts that have been preserved from the automobile.
SUPER CAPTION: Eduardo Mesejo, Director of Automobile Museum
Judges put the cars through a series of examinations to ensure that they would make the journey to Varadero.
For the organisers, the event was a great success.
As the finalists headed off for the slow race to Varadero it was uncertain how many would actually complete the course.
But judging by the smiles of the drivers and the crowds that had come to wave them off, this time, it really was the taking part that mattered more than the winning.
