How to be a Tanner / Leerlooier #02
TVGreen's Time Machine presents The Tanner from the series Claim to Fame
The small country of the Netherlands has a big name in leather. Rotterdam is the leather port of the world. Hides from all over are traded there, even before the cargo has been loaded onto the docks.
The Schueler's have tanned in this vat for a very long time, and before that it was also used; for churning butter. Peter Schueler says about his leather: Good leather is what my grandfather made. It used to outlast five horses.
Today, one horse gets five sets of tackle. When he learned the trade from his father, the leather was still being tanned with vegetable matter. Now, his tannery is converted to modern methods. Tradition is important to us, but you can't make a living with it, he says sensibly.
Cowhide isn't used anymore, only calfskin, which is made as thin as possible. The skins destined for clothing may not stretch at all, but must be supple. Sheep or goatskin is used for this. Sheepskin isn't so strong, but it's perfect for clothing, since it's light and supple. Everybody knows nappa and suede. The needle foot feverishly speeds along the seams to have the newest colours and designs ready for the dealer. The circle is finally closed.
