The Classic Museum - Hamilton NZ: Classic Restos Series 35
On the North Island of New Zealand is one of the top tourist attractions in the region. Local Hamilton businessman Tom Andrews from an early age had a fascination with cars and the Chevrolet Corvette, in particular, his expanding collection of classic cars, bikes and motoring memorabilia over the years saw his home became too small (I think we can all relate to this ). The solution was to build a purpose-built building to house his collection, over two stories that now displays over 100 classic cars, bikes and his extensive collection of motoring memorabilia, even the foyer of the building is a replica of a US 50's Diner.
Fletch talks with museum curator Stan Richardson about the collection and walks through the museum, highlighting cars that are rare examples and those that have a unique story. A massive collection of classics from around the world and worthy of a visit next time you're in New Zealand.

The Hillsborough Holden Museum in New Zealand: Classic Restos - Series 37
In the North Island of New Zealand at New Plymouth Fletch visits the massive Hillsborough Holden Museum and talks with owners and creators Steve and Joy Fabish.
Steve began the collection after completing a nut and bolt restoration of a 1977 HX Holden GTS Monaro that has pride of place in the collection today. Their collection has grown over 22 years and created the need to build a purpose-built, state of the art museum facility.
Today the collection of Holdens is massive, and Fletch talks with Steve about some of the vehicles on display. First up is a 1972 HQ Ute, then a 1949 FX Holden the oldest registered Holden in New Zealand, a1980 HZ Ute fully restored with a couple of later model additions. Then a couple of iconic Holden classics, a 1953 48/215 sedan purchased from Orange in NSW, still in immaculate condition that it was purchased in with only 80,000 miles on the clock, and finally a 1964 EH Holden Sedan in original condition, this car was called 'Australia's own car' and sold in excess of 250,000 vehicles back then.
Holden New Zealand and GM International have recognised the efforts of Steve & Joy Fabish and their Hillsborough Museum and donated the latest model Holden to add their museum display, a V6 VXR Commodore.
Fletch suggests that this museum is a must see if you are visiting New Zealand.

Bill Richardson's Transport World - Invercargill NZ - Classic Restos Series 33
Proof of Invercargill's title of the Classic Automotive hub of New Zealand is Fletch's' next stop at Bill Richardson Transport World. An Automotive Museum featuring 150 Vintage trucks, cars and transport memorabilia. Local transport company operator, Bill Richardson's love of trucks, is on display and his daughter Jocelyn talks of her father's love of vehicles and in particular his trucks and the legacy that is being continued today by his family. Graham one of the museum curators takes Fletch on a tour of just a few of the many museum highlights including a 1940 Dodge RX70 Texaco Truck, the most well know and photographed vehicle in the museum. But it's not all trucks; there is an impressive line of early Ford vehicles including a 1904 Ford AC through to a 1922 Doctors Coupe, the museum boasts 7 of the 8 models that preceded the Model T Ford, all on display in magnificently restored condition. One of the museum feature displays is a complete replica of Henry Ford's first workshop featuring a replica of the 1896 Ford Quadricycle built in 1963. The tour continues with an array of engines, petrol bowsers and transport vehicles, a hugely impressive display in Invercargill in New Zealand's Southland.

Visiting Museum to see Milo
Went up to the Birdwood Motor Museum to see Roothy deliver Milo to her new home.
He's a super friendly guy, makes time for everyone. Milo is an awesome Landcruiser with a lot of history. It's great to see that it's going to be preserved at this museum.
NZ Museum Visit! The National Toy and Transport Museum, Wanaka (South Island)
One of the largest private collections of cars in the Southern Hemisphere, this museum combines toys, cars and trucks in frankly mind-blogging numbers. Favourite vehicles lurking within include a Nissan BE-1, Hino four-axle fire engine, Singer SM1500, Vauxhall E-type, Mitsuoka Viewt, Leyland P76, Austin Allegro and Princess and a Mitsubishi 1100F. I also discover a Borgward Isabella, Hansa and Goliath from Germany.
I did visit on a particularly grotty day, when many exhibits were sadly being stored outside while a new building is created. I was also at something of a low ebb, hence the general levels of grumpiness. I'm better now. Thank you.

The Backyard British Car Museum.
Tucked away in the sunny Hawkes Bay is possibly the largest collection of British, (and one or two non British) cars in the world. Over 450 cars on display along with all sorts of memorabilia and a Dennis fire engine with a working hand turned siren.
Definitely the quirkiest museum I've ever visited.

New Zealand Classic Car & Hot Rod Festival: Classic Restos Series 33
Fletch is back in New Zealand for KUMEU, the 37th Annual Classic Car & Hot Rod Festival located west of Auckland NZ. This event continues to grow in popularity bringing together over 3,000 vehicles.
Fletch talks with owners of a diverse collection of classic cars including some that are not quite classics, like Daniel's 1961 Plymouth Belvedere that is a real eye catcher but not for the right reasons. The car in unrestored condition is a collection of Plymouth and other manufacturers parts into what he refers to as kaleidoscope of panels, something quite unusual. Then we see a real classic, a beautifully presented 1972 Holden HQ Premier Sedan owned by Renne. The VW Fraternity are well represented in NZ, and John's 1967 Kombi Split Window Micro Bus is a beautiful example, enthusiast Allan shows Fletch a pair of Ford Cortina's 1968 &1980 Models that to the naked eye look well presented other than they both boast V8 Chevrolet engines.
Steve's story is one of a labour of love, rescuing his 1938 Chevrolet Flatback from a swamp and undertaking the complete restoration himself, learning numerous skills along the way. Two other restorations featured include Peter and his 1945 Chevrolet 6 Cylinder Truck and a rather unusual modified Citroen with a V8 Engine amongst many other modifications. They share the passion for all things automotive in NZ and Fletch is back with more in Part 2 of his visit to NZ next week.
