✏︎ Since we are in Vietnam's capital, Hanoi, it only made sense to go all-in on a Vietnamese street food tour, which is why we had booked the popular food blogger/street food tourer, Mark Lowerson, who made the whole experience worthy of an A+.
Mark had amazing knowledge of the whole Vietnamese food culture and how everything works, which is also why our outlook on local street food was completely turned on its head.
After having toured some hidden gems in the old town of Hanoi, we were no longer reluctant of eating street food from otherwise dodgy places when compared to Western standards.
If you are going to Hanoi, you need to explore the food of Vietnam with Mark. He's is such a chill guy.

✏︎ As we decided to head for Sapa in the Northwestern region of Vietnam, we had to figure out how to get there. However it wasn't hard to pick the most intriguing solution, as we found out there are night trains from Hanoi to Lao Cai which is the train station closest to Sapa.
We booked a VIP cabin, which means we have a 2 berth cabin all to ourselves. You can also book a bed in a 4 berth cabin, but those were simply too small for comfort if you ask us.
The whole experience was great. Of course it's not easy to get a proper nights sleep, but it's a great way to save both money and time, as the train removes the need to accommodation elsewhere. If you are going to Sapa from Hanoi this is very much recommendable.

✏︎ Honestly, we don't know where to start. We just went on the most incredible Halong Bay cruise that it was almost too good to be true.
After careful and thorough research we landed on the Paradise Elegance cruise, where we went all-in on the biggest room available. We got the Captain's View Terrace, which was 1 of only 2 out of a total of 31 cabins.
We felt like celebrities and billionaires with our own terrace, corner suite, bathtub and an overall marvellous boat that could easily compete with one of those multi-million dollars superyacht off the french riviera. In other words, we had a once in a life experience that needs to be on everybody's bucket list.
Literally everything on the cruise was above and beyond right from the service, food to accommodation. If you are looking to experience a first class Halong Bay cruise the Paradise Elegance if probably your best pick.

✏︎ Hanoi, Vietnam, is one of the most unique places we have ever had the pleasure of visiting.
This place has so much to offer in so many different ways that it's hard to figure out where to start. The diversity of people, places, cafés, restaurants, bars, shops, architecture is just mind blowing.
The old quarter of Hanoi is a fairly small area of Hanoi, but we have spent several full days in the area without getting the feeling that now we have seen it all. Because we haven't. It would take much longer than that.
If you are one of those people who keep a bucket list the old quarter of Hanoi should definitely be on it. At least that's our opinion.

Things to do in HANOI, Vietnam (Mostly For Free!!) | Old Quarter
We’re visiting Hanoi, Vietnam for a short trip and are about to find out some of the best things to do, the variety of cuisines and the breathtaking Halong Bay over the next few days.
What we ate in Hanoi:
The city can easily be splitted into 3 quarters: Old Quarter, French Quarter and Ba Dinh.
The most hectic one would be the Old Quarter. This is where you’ll find most of the eateries, accommodations and shopping! It is all located within a labyrinth of narrow streets, packed with motorbikes zipping back and forth from every direction. Although intimidating, it does add some adventure to the trip.
Right next to it is the French Quarter; a calmer and more classy part of the city. This is where all the government offices, embassies, luxury hotels and the famous Hanoi Opera House is located.
And finally there’s Ba Dinh, the historical part of Hanoi. Explore museums, the ancient citadel and the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum; all within walking distance.

✏︎ Sapa is a fairly small town in the mountain region of North Vietnam. This is a unique oasis for anybody who appreciates pristine nature and incredibly scenery. And that is something we do, which is why have planned four days in this amazing landscape.
On our first day we set out on a 12-13 km hike with the lovely local villager, Soo, who led us through the, at times, quite challenging trekking terrain of Sapa.
If you are going to Sapa, it's a good idea to hire a local guide for yourself rather than going with a group of other tourists. When you have the guide for yourself you learn much more as you can ask all the questions you want. It also makes the experience much more authentic.
One thing we learned however, though, was that all these village people who follows you as you hike through the mountains, are only following you for one reason, namely to sell you their stuff. Of course, you don't have to buy anything from them although they are quite persuasive, but we felt that we should buy something, as these people are dirt poor. 1 US dollar literally means the world to them.

RIDING VIETNAM'S SCENIC NORTH WEST MOUNTAINS Adventure Oz
Day 8 on the Top Gear Tour with Vietnam Motorbike Tours! Epic riding in the remote north west of Vietnam, and its corners, climbs, corners, descents and more corners as we explore the Moc Chau plateau. It's pure bucket list riding and the best way to see the real Vietnam. There are thousands of beautiful valleys across Vietnam and we stayed in one of them last night. But no rest for the wicked, it's time to endure the daily commute as our slave driver issues the order. And what a way to commute. Mist covered mountains, terraced rice fields, cool mountain air. Tough life for Vietnam Motorbike Tours, but someone has to do it. This is the perfect way to see the real Vietnam.
Alrighty then, day eight. What's on the agenda? According to our itinerary, we leave the green embrace of Mai Chau valley in the morning. With the mists rising off the paddy fields, we hit the road and head higher into the northwest mountains. Check. What else? As we arrive on the Moc Chau plateau the trees fade away to reveal acres of tea plantations. This area is famous for its excellent brew. Okay, well I coffee but I don't mind riding past tea plantations. What else? The temperatures drop as we ride higher. The landscape becomes barren and bare, making it appear isolated and remote. Indeed, this part of Vietnam was a special semi-autonomous zone until the late 20th century. It's certainly a day of elevation changes with Vietnam Motorbike Tours and I suspect we are riding up and down this plateau throughout the day. Exceptional views, picturesque valleys. Loving it. And now yet another word from our culturally inappropriate sponsor. Lets see if the guys are happy with the trip so far or plotting a class action lawsuit.
Plenty of water in Vietnam. And there are plenty of dams too, many of these generate hydroelectricity and around 70% of Vietnam's electricity is generated that way. And somewhere around here is the biggest hydoelectric scheme in Indochina. We are riding in the dry season with Vietnam Motorbike Tours but it still rains occasionally. Over the 10 day trip we just got some light rain for one morning. Apparently they guys get asked a lot about when is the best time to ride Vietnam, and it actually doesn't matter that much. Weather patterns vary a lot from north to south, and the guys based themselves kind of in the middle at Nha Trang because it offers the best year round riding. And they vary the destinations to suit. For example the monsoonal storms up north mean tours like ours that finish in Hanoi are only run for a few months of the year. Corners, corners and more corners. I figure we are climbing the plateau again and it's hard to keep your eyes on the road with views like this. Another awesome day with Vietnam Motorbike Tours and we pull into another classy hotel in Son La, a highland town with a real buzz. Stick around for more adventures in the real vietnam.
