Celebrating the East Building Twentieth-Century Art Series, Part 2: Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920)
David Gariff, senior lecturer, National Gallery of Art. Born in northern Italy, Amedeo Modigliani moved to Paris in 1906 at the age of 21 to immerse himself in the art of the day. His hero, Paul Cézanne, died the same year, and a retrospective in 1907 impressed the young artist: in his pocket he kept a picture of Cézanne’s Boy in a Red Waistcoat. Like Pablo Picasso, to whom he often compared himself, Modigliani was drawn to non-Western art, including Khmer and Egyptian works. As part of the series Celebrating the East Building: 20th-Century Art, this presentation by senior lecturer David Gariff on July 12, 2018, at the National Gallery of Art, discusses portraits of Modigliani’s fellow painter Chaim Soutine; Léon Bakst, designer for Serge Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes; and Renée Kisling, wife of the painter Moïse Kisling. Most of the paintings referenced were acquired by Chester Dale, a founding benefactor of the National Gallery of Art, whose 1963 bequest transformed the museum’s modern art collection. His wife Maud mounted exhibitions of Modigliani’s work and published one of the first scholarly monographs on the artist in 1929. This presentation was part of the series Celebrating the East Building: 20th-Century Art.

O BISPO DO ROSARIO TRAILER
BISPO DO ROSÁRIO is a docudrama about the life and art of the brasilian artist Arthur Bispo do Rosário who for 50 years lived in the desperate asylum the Colonia Juliano Moreira - a psychiatric hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Until his death in 1989 his art was almost completely unknown as Bispo refused to be separeted from the works he produced. He had never intended to be an artist but only to follow the voice of God that had toldd him he should reconstruct the world and present it to Him on his death.
The first exhibition of Bispos art took place in Rio de Janeiro just after his death and was so sucessful and polemical that this same exhibition was invited to be shown in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Porto Alegre and the Stokolm-Kulturhuset in Sweden(1991). His embroiders, miniatures and windows(assemblages) were in the Modern Art Museum (MAM) of Rio de Janeiro and Bispo now is considered one of Brazils most important artists. His works are representing Brazil in The Venice Art Bienal 95.
BISPO DO ROSÁRIO tells the story of this artist, his art and relationship with the probationary psychologist Rosangela Maria, taking as its viewpoint Bispos imagination.
In 1981, Rosângela Maria takes up the challenge of facing Bispos reluctance to submittinghimself for treatment. Little by little she wins his affection and confidence. Bispo tells her of his life before the asylum and develops deep feelings for her: he says she is the most important person in his life and keeper of everything he has.
The time Bispo spend as a mariner and boxing champion in the Navy is artistically documented on wood miniatures of ships and embroideries on cloth. He tells Rosângela he visit many countries and to represent this passsage of his life he embroiders, on bedclothes, using the thread of the hospitals uniform, the names, flags and others information from those countries. Because of Bispos passion for the Miss Universe parade he also embroidered bands for each country with historical references.
Secretly Bispo builds scenary in which to play out Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, the story of an impossible love, with Rosângela. Fragments of this play are used to express their emotional involment and Bispos fantasies.
