Rescue workers raced against the clock Tuesday - trying to pull survivors and bodies after a five-story apartment building collapsed into a mountain of rubble in a poor New Delhi neighborhood.
Officials say that dozens of people were killed -- scores more were injured.
The 15-year-old building housed hundreds of people. Residents say they heard what sounded like a rumble of thunder -- and then floors started falling on top of one another.
SOT: AP Reporter -- It happened during dinner time, that is why there were so many injuries.
Authorities say emergency efforts were hampered because rescue vehicles had difficulty navigating the narrow alleyways.
The cause of the collapse is unknown -- but one official said the building may have been weakened by water damage following monsoon rains. Residents also say the landlord was illegally constructing an additional floor on the building.
Police have filed charges against the owner of the building -- who has not been seen since the building fell in on itself.
