Wild & Magical Tofino - British Columbia
On the last leg of our adventure, the GCAT crew enjoyed the small town of Tofino.
Tofino sits on a narrow peninsula bordered by Pacific Rim National Park Reserve to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west, north and east in a geographical region called Clayoquot Sound. The town lies in the centre of a United Nations World Biosphere Reserve, an ecologically significant area that supports many uncommon plant and animal species.
Tourism is the mainstay of the local economy with outdoor recreation, such as whale watching, surfing, kayaking and beachcombing attracting thousands of visitors every year.
We enjoyed the scenery and breathtaking atmosphere of miles of sandy beaches, stands of massive old-growth cedars and a seascape dotted with lush, green islands. There are a ton of other things to do in Tofino as well including cultural adventures, bear and wolf watching tours, heli-tours, camping, great dining and pampering spas.
Rediscover new beginnings in this wild, magical place.
You'll be amazed how Tofino's force of nature can move you.

Clayoquot Sound: Behind the Bloom
In June, Clayoquot Sound was faced with a toxic algal bloom. These are made much worse by nutrient loading from salmon farm sewage. It’s time to remove salmon farms from the coastal waters of British Columbia. You can help! Please send a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today.

Wolves at Your Door - Clayoquot Sound, Vancouver Island
Wolves, black bears and cougars are year-round inhabitants of the Tofino area.
Carnivores and people have co-existed on the west coast for many years with little conflict. Wolves are valued and connected to the people of the west coast through spiritual and cultural identity. They also play an essential ecological role in checking the growth of herbivore populations and as a result, entire ecosystems can be altered by an increase or decrease in carnivore numbers.
Wolves have become more abundant in Clayoquot Sound and are an astounding animal to witness in the wild. But they can be difficult to see as they are still rare and keep moving in their quest for food. The good news is that they live along the shoreline all year long.
The GCAT crew just had to encounter this!
So we decided to take the safest type of viewing opportunity -- a wildlife viewing tour by boat with the Browning Pass Charters. It took some great planning from our guide and skipper, Mike White, but we managed to catch some wolves feeding. We even got to see some bald eagles. It was awesome.
This is one tour you have just got to experience!
And don't forget your camera.

Clayoquot Sound is known world wide for its environmental activism. In Canada, it is a hotspot for intense activism and direct action blockading. The Tla-o-qui-aht first nations people, of the 5,000 year old village of Opitsaht on Meares Island, were the first in Canada to establish a blockade in 1980. Direct action blockading was the only way to keep the chainsaws out of the 22,000 acres of pristine ancient growth rainforest on Meares Island. The Tla-o-qui-aht, along with a core group of concerned citizens of the area (who formed a grassroots environmental group known as the Friends of Clayoquot Sound) initiated the era of direct action through blockading that is still very much alive and well today. The largest civil disobedience act in Canadian history took place in Clayoquot Sound in 1993. Nearly 900 people were arrested for participating in a massive blockade (a peace camp) and refusing to obey court orders to disband and remove themselves from the effort. Unfortunately, the Clayoquot ancient growth rainforest is still under major threat today. Plans are in the works to remove much of the last stands of pristine ancient growth.
