Clayton Selected for 2018 NC Main Street Conference!
We got it!
The Town of Clayton and the Clayton Downtown Development Association are excited to announce that we’ve been selected to host the 2018 North Carolina Main Street Conference!
Set to span three days next March, the conference will bring hundreds to Clayton from all over North Carolina – including main street managers, downtown revitalization board members, town planners and elected officials. Joining them will be professionals from fields that affect downtown development, such as design, architecture, historic preservation, landscape architecture and event planning.
In all, we expect 350 to 400 people to come to Clayton next March.
Clayton hosted the conference in 2012, and Mayor Jody McLeod said he is eager to showcase how much our downtown has flourished in the past five years.
“We’re honored that the North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Main Street Center has once again chosen to ‘Think Clayton’ and select us as the home for next year’s conference,” said Mayor Jody McLeod. “Our public art initiatives were just getting started five years ago, and now we’re seeing the impact and value those projects can bring to a downtown. This is a great opportunity for Clayton, and we can’t wait to welcome these guests from all across the state!”
Getting selected to host the N.C. Main Street Conference is no small feat. In fact, there’s quite a rigorous selection process, said Liz Parham, director of the N.C. Department of Commerce Urban Development Division.
“We conduct a comprehensive assessment of a community before we select a host city,” Parham said. “The community must be able to demonstrate and showcase success in their downtown revitalization efforts. They must have quality downtown facilities that can comfortably handle up to 450 participants, committed volunteers, town council and staff support, and good amenities. We feel that Clayton has the right combination of these components for a great conference in 2018.”
Most of the conference activities will be held at The Clayton Center, a historic complex housing our performing arts auditorium and meeting facilities, located in the heart of Downtown Clayton. Attendees will also have plenty of opportunity to tour, shop and dine in Clayton’s vibrant downtown.
Although the conference is organized by the N.C. Main Street staff, the host community has a to-do list as well. There’s a lot of work to do in the next year!! We can’t wait to work with our downtown businesses to help promote them to conference attendees and get them ready for the huge number of visitors.
The N.C. Main Street assists selected communities across the state in restoring economic vitality to their historic downtowns. Using a comprehensive downtown revitalization process developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Main Street encourages economic development within the context of historic preservation.
Main Street staff provides technical assistance, guidance and training for participating communities. While grant funds for specific projects occasionally become available, Main Street is a self-help program, and it is up to local communities to provide the human and financial resources necessary to operate their downtown programs.
New Main Street communities are selected every three years through a competitive application process. Communities must have a certified population under 50,000 and commit to hiring a full-time downtown manager and providing funding for operating the program for an initial three-year period.
Clayton was selected as a Main Street Community in 2006.
The Clayton Downtown Development Association is made up of Town Council-appointed board members who work to preserve the character of the Downtown Clayton area, protect the historic significance of the buildings, facilities, and spaces within Downtown Clayton, educate citizens and business people about the value of the history of Downtown Clayton, promote Downtown Clayton as a place to invest for the preservation and promotion of historic quality, unique features and historic landmarks, serve as a review and advisory committee to the Town of Clayton and implement projects that enhance and protect Downtown Clayton. The CDDA also organizes several special events, including the Town Square Concert Series and the Christmas Village & Tree Lighting.

Clayton Parks Bond Nov. 5th - Municipal Park
Did you know that thanks to your input we have a Parks & Recreation Master Plan to guide our park planning?
It calls for a splash pad, new mountain bike trails, new playgrounds, greenways, a community center improvements, a second dog park, updated athletic fields, picnic shelters, expanded parking and much more?!
On November 5th, Town of Clayton residents have an opportunity to vote on $18 million in general obligation bonds that are essential in making that plan work! A general obligation bond is the least expensive financing option available to the Town. The bond projects will be funded through the Town of Clayton's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) utilizing our current tax rate. In the addition to the bond, staff is working to leverage every Town dollar with grants, sponsorships and partnerships.
Election Day: Tuesday, November 5, 2019
Early Voting Oct 16-Nov 2
Voter Registration Ends Oct 11
Below is a list of Parks & Recreation projects highlighted in the Capital Improvement Plan. With passage of the bond, projects are slated to begin in 2020 with a target completion by 2026.
Municipal Park off Stallings Street in Downtown Clayton is the Town’s first and oldest park, with many of its current features dating back to the early 1980’s. The Master Plan calls for an updated playground, a possible splash pad, updated athletic fields, a community stage with large green space, picnic shelters, updated restrooms and a walking trail that will connect into the popular Mountain-to-Sea Trail.
East Clayton Community Park, located on Glen Laurel Road, is currently home to a disc golf course, and soccer, baseball, multipurpose fields and the upcoming Harmony Playground. The Capital Improvement Plan is proposing to design and construct artificial turf practice fields, light practice fields, pave existing gravel parking, expand parking and update existing restrooms. It also calls for adding birthday party sized picnic shelters.
Clayton Community Park opened almost 20 years ago to meet the needs of our growing community and is easily one of our most popular parks. Proposed improvements include a new playground, updated restrooms, additional walking trails, expanded tennis courts, additional picnic shelters, a dog park and expanded parking.
The Clayton Community Center is currently home to a basketball gym, art, pottery and group fitness room as well as flexible childcare space. The Master Plan calls for possible building expansions and other improvements such as additional fitness equipment areas, outdoor sports courts, shade for the existing playground, and expanded parking.
All-Star Park located on Front Street near the Clayton Post Office is home to a picnic shelter, bathrooms, an outdoor basketball court and a playground. Improvements call for shade over the existing playground.
Town Square is on Main Street in the heart of Downtown Clayton just across from Town Hall. Here the Town and various community organizations including the Clayton Downtown Development Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and Clayton Rotary host annual events like the Town Square Concert series, free movie nights, the Shindig, Mondo Roots Music & Art Festival and much more. A permanent stage in this location along with improved parking would reduce annual expenses and make this public space more suited to hosting events.
Horne Square, just down Main Street from Town Square, is another hub of activity and was always envisioned as a gathering place. Improvements to increase parking, a possible fountain/splash pad and enlarged event space would help this public square to better host gatherings like the weekly Saturday Clayton Farm and Community Market, Last Friday and other events.

The town of Clayton
Concord is the largest city in Contra Costa County, California, USA, and the 202nd largest in the U.S. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 121,780. Originally founded in 1869 as the community of Todos Santos by Salvio Pacheco, the name was changed to Concord within months. The city is a major regional suburban East Bay center within the San Francisco Bay Area, and is located just 31 miles (50 km) east of San Francisco. In terms of travelling distance on the ground, it is 29 miles (47 km) northeast of San Francisco, 22 miles (35 km) northeast from Oakland, 65 miles (105 km) southwest of Sacramento, and 51 miles (82 km) north of San Jose. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 30.1 square miles (78.1 km≤), all of it land. The focal point of downtown Concord is Todos Santos Plaza, which encompasses an entire city block and is known for its farmers market, free summer concerts, and large number of surrounding restaurants. Much of the area immediately around downtown has recently been redeveloped, with new high-density apartment and condominium projects to take advantage of the close proximity to public transportation and the vibrant area surrounding the park. Despite this, some crime and homelessness remain issues in the downtown area. To the north and east of downtown is the older residential area of Concord, with many homes dating back to before World War II. In the far northern edge of town is a primarily industrial area, dominated by the Tesoro Golden Eagle refinery (which is actually not located within city limits). The southeastern area of the city, centered along Clayton Road, is primarily residential and was mostly developed in the 1960s and 1970s. In the southwest area of the city is the primarily Latino neighborhood known as Four Corners, centered around the intersection of Monument Boulevard and Oak Grove Road. Concord is bordered on the west by Pleasant Hill and the unincorporated community of Pacheco, on the south by Walnut Creek, on the southeast by Clayton, on the northeast by Pittsburg and the unincorporated community of Bay Point, and on the north by the unincorporated community of Clyde. Though it shares no border with Concord, Martinez (the county seat) is located almost immediately adjacent to Concord on the northwest.
Snow - March 12, 2017 - Clayton, NC
A weak, quick-moving system rolled across the state and gave a quick, late-season coating of snow to western and central North Carolina. I ended up with approximately 0.3 of snow accumulation at my location just north of Clayton, NC. Some lucky locations got over 1.0 in the North Carolina Sandhills.
