Sea Kayaking in Nerja: Burriana beach to Maro
Kayaking is similar despite the water body right? Well, this is the assumption many people make which is not true. Here is a breakdown of the types of kayakingWhitewater kayakingTouring kayakingSurf kayakingSit-on-top kayakingSport kayakingSea kayakingIn Nerja, the lovers of the sport enjoy sea kayaking owing to the pristine, crystal clear water, the waterfalls around every corner you turn, kayak friendly coves and sea caves which reflect different stone colours. This is in addition to an unperturbed underwater landscape that is clearly visible from your kayak.Sea kayaking is done in the open expanse of the ocean or sea and is favoured for the waters unpredictability. As such, sea kayaks are built with two sealed bulkheads: In the bow and the stern. Kayaking in the sea is a practised skill that requires you to be fit and strong. The kayaks are heavy ranging from 15-19 feet in length with the ability to surmount sizeable waves because of their aerodynamics.Nerjas Kayaking treasuresThe Acantilados de Maro Cerro Gordo Natural ParkThis is a natural park which is home to some of the most untouched virgin territory. This is because it is highly protected and features the best beaches on the coastPlaya del CanueloCantarijjanLa Caleta de MaroLas Calas del PinoYour kayaking adventures will be within the confines of the park but it provides more than enough playing ground, even more than you can cover in a day.Playa del CanueloCantarijjanLa Caleta de MaroLas Calas del PinoThe Beach at MaroOne of the favourite spots on the Eastern Costa del Sol for kayakers visiting Nerja is the beach at Maro. This is because there are kayaks rented out by the hour by an activity firm known as the Salamandra. Understandably, you may not have your kayak with you especially if you are a visitor and this service comes in handy. The terrain at the beach in Maro is peppered with waterfalls, rugged landscape and the water is azure blue with clear views of the life underwater. The WeatherAs always, sea kayaking is best enjoyed during the summer time and it offers great sporting activities for all age demographics. Children can learn the sport as the water is not rough while the elderly can enjoy a slower pace of exploring the secluded coves and beaches that Nerja has to offer which are only accessible by kayak. For the fitter sporty demographic, you can kayak from Burriana beach to Maro using a local company known as Educare Aventura. The company is aptly located at the end of Burriana beach and they provide safety equipment, a brief instructions course, and guides. The route will take approximately 3-5 hours. For alternative routes, you can rent a canoe and go exploring for yourself. There is the option of longer routes or a route that takes you to the caves where you can dive and explore the inner chambers of the coves and sea cavesSea kayaking is a great way to enjoy the water, challenge yourself physically and make lasting memories of your time in timeless Nerja.
Sea Kayaking Almería (Cabo de Gata) with TRAK Kayak
Antonio and Manolo spent a few days paddling in the Nature Reserve of Cabo de Gata in Almeria. It is a well known sea kayaking destination in Spain, full of caves. Almería is especially convenient in winter when the weather in that part of Southern Spain is much warmer than in the rest of the country. See the full chronicle of the trip here

THE GLOWING BIO BAY IN VIEQUES PUERTO RICO
Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show.
Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn't sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera.
The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these little guys live in. Here in Vieques, Puerto Rico, you are not allowed to swim, or use gasoline. Nearby light pollution has to be kept to a minimum, and there give Bio Bay some days off now and again to recover. This is probably why it remains the brightest in the world. High Five for sustainable eco tourism. I wish everywhere was this forward thinking.
This was one of my best travel experiences. Like I said, it's worth the trip!

Costa Rica Rios - Week Of Rivers Kayak (Low Water)
888 434-0776 | UK: 0800 612 8718 | International: +1 920 434-7485 | CostaRicaRios.com
Your Costa Rica Rios guide will greet you at the Juan Santamaria International airport in San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO) upon your arrival. After leaving the airport, we begin the journey to Villa Florencia and our headquarters in Turrialba, about a two hour drive through orchards, small towns and beautiful coffee fields
Upon arrival in Turrialba you will settle into your home away from home: comfortable accommodations with tropical courtyard, volcano views, swimming pool and jacuzzi and relaxing hammock area. This evening you will enjoy a delicious and authentic Costa Rican meal prepared by the local chefs. This will be a great opportunity to practice your high school Spanish, as you enjoy your head guide’s company at dinner. The remainder of the evening is spent relaxing and getting ready for the week ahead.
Kayak Pejiballe
After breakfast, we outfit you with your paddling gear from our wide selection. We start out at the Rio Pejibaye, a calm jungle river with clear water and spectacular scenery. This river is an excellent introduction to Costa Rican whitewater with two distinct sections. The Lower Pejibaye is class II/III with fun surf waves and deep pools for practice. The Upper Pejibaye or Taos section is class III/IV with creek like features and steeper rapids. Both are equally scenic and allow plenty of time to get warmed up for the upcoming week.
Kayak Sarapiqui
We will hit the road just after breakfast and travel to the Sarapiquí River, located on the north side of the Caribbean lowlands. The Sarapiquí is often referred to as the “Jewel of Costa Rica” with clear water, deep pools and excellent whitewater. There are 3 distinct sections on this river that we paddle, generally the more difficult whitewater is located upstream while the lower sections provide fantastic opportunities to practice and improve in the warm tropical water and sunshine. Paddlers sometimes have a difficult time with this section of river because they are so distracted by the beautiful scenery. Tonight we will lodge near the town of Puerto Viejo, Sarapiquí, close to the river, enjoying a jungle setting and the use of a swimming pool.
Kayak Sarapiqui
The second day on the Sarapiqui, we put in upstream at La Virgen or San Miguel section. These sections have much to offer paddlers of all ability levels. There are some exciting class III+ rapids and class IV rapids on the San Miguel section, and some fun play waves to practice your moves. Make sure you have had your morning coffee before getting on the river. This section will very much depend on water levels!!!
Kayak Upper Upper Pacuare
Today we travel to the remote and absolutely beautiful mountains of the Pacuare headwaters. This rarely paddled section of river starts with class II and III rapids and progresses in difficulty as we continue downstream. Not a problem for class III paddlers as there is a small road following the river during the first several kilometers – a quick shuttle gives plenty of opportunities for surfing the friendly waves again and again. Experienced paddlers will love the steep rapids and super-fun play spots of the Upper-Upper Pacuare. Class II paddlers might head back to the Pejibaye River today to practice their skills and have a few lessons from our expert guides.
Kayak Lower Pacuare To The Jungle Lodge
This 24 kilometer (17 miles) class III/IV section is your paddling gem for the next two days. This is the most popular run on the Pacuare, often said to be one of the top five river sections in the world. We will put-in a bit higher than other groups and enjoy an additional 4 kilometers of whitewater and rapids as we paddle to the riverside Jungle Lodge. To spend a night along the shores of the Pacuare River is an experience every person should enjoy at least once in their lives. We light the camp with candles and prepare delicious tropical cuisine in our kitchen with all amenities. The camp is complete with flush toilets, showers, raised platform cabins with real beds and fully landscaped grounds. The whitewater on the first day is class II and III; fun surf waves and rolling rapids abound.
Kayak Lower Pacuare
After a delicious breakfast we launch and begin preparing for the action downstream. There are about 3 kilometers of warm-up rapids before we enter Huacas canyon and the first of several class IV rapids. The river then opens up as we play and paddle mostly class III whitewater until Cimarrones, a steep and technical class IV drop. There are still 5 more kilometers of whitewater action before we arrive in the Caribbean flatland town of Siquirres where we take out. Class II/III paddlers will experience all these thrilling class III and IV rapids in a guided raft or shredder. We then return to Turrialba for an evening goodbye fiesta at our headquarters.

Late October Kings
Late in the season the weather gets unpredictable, but that didn't keep kayaks off the water. Cobia were no-shows, but I managed to find other fish in the windy conditions. Surprisingly clear water made the trip enjoyable, despite an early brush with a Man-O-War that brought some discomfort when a wave sloshed it into the kayak.

Crystal clear water at the Packery channel.
When the wind and the surf falls into the right place, we get blue water in the Texas Coast. I went to the packer channel some time some time last year, I took the kayaks out and fish all day. Didn't catch a damn thing! Decided to go out for a swim, the water was too clean to not recorded and post about it!
