The Clearwater-Pipestone chain of lakes is an extraordinary water system with over 70 miles of water. It consists of eleven lakes and two rivers that are connected together. Due to its overall narrowness, many islands, sheltered bays, and winding rivers, it can be fished even in rough weather.
The Clearwater-Pipestone Chain of Lakes is located between Lake of the Woods to the west and Rainy Lake to the southeast. Our waters flow into the northwest arm of Rainy Lake via the Footprint River.

Duhu Lake Recreation Sites is in British Columbia near the Alaska Highway. It's a free rustic camping area provided by the BC government. It's dry camping in the wilderness. It was a great stop for us on our trip to Alaska.

The History of Clearwater Lake Lodge

Clearwater Lake Lodge was originally started in 1915 by Charlie and Petra Boostrom. They chose the west end of Clearwater Lake because they believed that views of the palisades were the best on the Gunflint Trail. The main lodge was finished in 1926 and had 14 rooms. They owned and operated the lodge till 1946 when they sold it for $45,000. It has had several owners since then and is now owned by Carl Clark and Adam Van Tassell. The Van Tassell family lives on site and are the full time caretakers of the property. The lodge is the oldest and largest free standing hand-hewn whole log structure in the region and is listed on the National Historic Registry. Clearwater Lodge has been in the resort and outfitting business since 1915(97 years) and is the oldest resort on the Gunflint Trail and the original outfitter of the area.

Clearwater River BC White Water Kayaking Summer 2015
In the summer of 2015, I kayaked on the Clearwater River near Clearwater, British Columbia. I was very impressed, and I'll definitely go back.
I did three sections of this river: From below Kettle to the town of Clearwater, from a few miles upstream of Kettle to a little before Kettle, and about a 3 miles section that included Sabretooth.
I drove there from my home in Washington. The country is beautiful all the way from the US Border on Highway 97 to the town of Clearwater and beyond.
I camped at the North Thompson River Campground.
The Clearwater gets much higher each year than the level it was at when I was there. So, you could catch it at the level in this video every year if your schedule is flexible. It's just a matter of waiting for the river to get down to that level, or whatever level you prefer. 2015 was a dry year so it dropped sooner than normal.
One funny that happened was I lost my boat on the way to the put-in. The guy I was with suggested I leave my boat at a fork in the trail and check out the put-in just below Kettle. I decided that put-in was within my ability, so I walked back to get my boat, but I couldn't find where I'd left it. After a while I walked back to the put-in where my partner was waiting for me. He told me to look further up the trail. I followed that advice and found the boat. He didn't act impatient, but he must have been wondering about me.
I launched at that put-in three different times, and each time I had some trouble, so I started using a friendlier put-in slightly downstream. I think of peeling out of an eddy as a beginner move, but an eddy like that one will always be hard for me. I probably acted like a deer in the head lights and didn't paddle hard when I needed to.
On this trip, I didn't do anything other than kayak and sometimes mountain bike the shuttles. However, this area has lots of different recreational opportunities. I've been up to Clearwater Lake on another trip, and it's big and beautiful.

Leaving Lilloet the Highway 99 follows the valley of the Cayoosh Creek, with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. Then the highway reaches the Duffey Lake, with snowed- capped peaks at the background, including Mt Rohr. Before Whistler there is a lake with forest-covered mountains. Passed Whistler the highway is named Sea to Sky. A first stop is at the Brandywine Falls, with a 70-m/230-ft drop into a canyon. Next stop can be at the Shannon Falls near Squamish, a popular picnic spot during the weekend. From then on the highway reaches the sea, with continual views of the coast until arrive at the outskirts of Vancouver.
