Kleopatra Kapısı diğer adıyla Deniz Kapısı; Kleopatra Kapısı, Tarsus'un girişindedir. Bizans Döneminde inşa edilen kent surlarının Dağ Kapısı, Adana Kapısı ve Deniz Kapısı bulunuyordu. Evliya Çelebi Seyahatnamesinde Tarsus'u anlatırken bu kapı için İskele kapısı ismini takmıştır. Kapının yapımında Horasan harcı kullanılmıştır. Kapının kenarı at nalı şeklinde ve yerden yüksekliği 6.17 m, derinliği ise 6.18 m. dir. Tarsus'un 18. Yüzyıl sonlarına kadar oldukça sağlam üç kapılı surları, 1835 yılında Mısırlı İbrahim Paşa tarafından yıktırılmış ve sadece iki ayak üzerinde tek kemerli deniz kapısı kalmıştır. Mısır'ın ünlü kraliçesi Kleopatra' nın sevgilisi Romalı General Antonius ile Tarsus’ta buluşmak üzere geldiklerinde, o zamanın limanı olan Gözlü Kule'de büyük bir törenle karşılanmışlar ve Deniz Kapısından şehre geldiği söylenir. Bu nedenle Deniz Kapısına Kleopatra Kapısı da denir.
Tarsus'un tarihi çok eski yıllara 8000 yıl öncesine dayanmaktadır.MÖ 4 yüzyıldan kalma sikkeler üzerinde Heraklesin resmi bulunmaktadır. Tarsus özellikle dinler tarihi açısından temel taşlardan biridir. Bunların yanı sıra dünyanın ilk kanalizasyonlu Tarihi Roma Yolu, Roma hamamı'da Tarsus'tadır. Kleopatra Kapısı da şehrin en eski kalıntıları arasındadır.

Mersin Turkey | 2019

Mersin is a port city in southern Turkey on the Mediterranean coast. It’s a gateway to Tarsus, a nearby Christian pilgrimage destination where St. Paul’s Well commemorates the saint’s birthplace. Nearby is Cleopatra’s Gate, one of the remaining ruins of the old Roman defensive walls. In the city, the Mersin Museum exhibits archaeological artifacts and sculptures from nearby burial mounds and excavations.

Ancient road uncovered in Turkey’s Tarsus

Works at an archaeological site in the southern province of Mersin’s historical Tarsus district have unearthed an ancient road.

In a written statement, Tarsus Museum Director Mehmet Çavuş said drainage work in the field had revealed an ancient road built using the polygonal technique.

Çavuş said a number of shops and terra-cotta jacking pipes were also discovered uncovered at the western section of the ancient road.

“The basalt ancient road is 215 meters away from the historical Cleopatra Gate, known as the naval gate. It was one of the main arterial roads providing access to Mersin. The road has the same features as the Ancient Street, which was discovered in the center of Tarsus during excavations carried out between 1993 and 2003,” he added.

The current building was built in 1862. The current church building serves as a museum, and in its gardens there are remains and examples of columns and Christian gravestones with Syriac writing. There is a wall surrounding the building and the garden, and there is a fee of 5₺ to enter.
