East Hill Lift in Hastings (A railway up a cliff)?!
East Hill Lift
The United Kingdom's steepest funicular railway is not only a structure of national importance but also a source of immense local pride.
The East Hill Lift provides access to Hastings Country Park which overlooks the Old Town and Rock-a-Nore. It was in the country park that Hastings resident John Logie Baird, the inventor of television, got the inspiration which led to his first TV experiments.
The lift provides views over the Stade, home to the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe.

Legacy of the Railway
The United Kingdom's steepest funicular railway is not only a structure of national importance but also a source of immense local pride.
It casts a welcoming shadow over Europe's largest beach launched fishing fleet and provides thousands of residents and visitors easy access to the Hastings Country Park and some of the most spectacular vantage points over the town.
It's become an enduring symbol of the unique charm and character of Hastings, a symbol powerful and true enough to withstand two world wars and the fast-changing tides of a turbulent century.
Planning of the Railway
This was fraught with unexpected pitfalls and seemingly insurmountable problems.
Although the town's council successfully bought the land, the original owner, the Reverend Sayer-Milward, had retained a covenant through which he could prevent any construction work.
This setback was quickly compounded by the submission of a major petition from people at High Wickham protesting against any proposed development.
The Council responded with a petition of its own in which 500 residents offered their support for the idea of a cliff railway. This created the impetus for a series of complex negotiations with Sayer-Milward which, after many arduous months, concluded with him granting approval in 1898.
Construction of the Railway
If the Council had found the planning process to be tough, it was nothing compared to the nightmare of the actual construction.
Deep faults in the rocks made it extremely difficult to safely evacuate the shaft and construction workers faced all manner of hidden hazards and perils.
In the Summer of 1902 the opening of the railway had to be delayed because one of the carriages (containing several Council officials) was derailed just fifteen yards from its apex.
Despite all of this, on August 10 1902, the railway finally opened and the first chapter of a one hundred year story had been written.

Hastings West Hill Cliff Railway 1989
A visit to Hastings in East Sussex included a ride up and down the 6ft (1,829mm) gauge West Hill Cliff Railway. In its 500ft length it climbs 170ft at a gradient of 33%.
British Trains 24 - 10.25 inch Gauge Hastings Miniature Railway featuring fighting Seagulls
Today, the Hastings Miniature Railway was running, and as I never got to ride on it in all my 45 odd years of visiting the town, today was the day I finally got to ride on it
In it we see the diesel steam loco, the representation of a class 47 47834 and an American styled locomotive
Also fighting seagulls and fishing boats

In Hastings, there are two-Cliff Railways. We drive with the East Hill Lift.
The length is 267 feet - The track width is 5 ft.
Supposedly be 78% steep railway. but I doubt at.
The miniature railway runs from the East Hill Lift to the amusement park. 1948 it was opened. In 2011 she was re-opened. The gauge is 10 1/4inch. I guess the length is 500 m (0,3 miles).

Hastings East Hill Cliff Railway 2010
A short video taken on Tuesday 27th July 2010 showing the funicular East Hill Cliff Railway, or East Hill Lift located in the English seaside town of Hastings in East Sussex. It provides access to Hastings Country Park via the East Hill, which overlooks the Old Town and Rock-a-Nore, an area to the east of Hastings. The line provides views over the Stade, home to the largest beach launched fishing fleet in Europe. The line is owned and operated by Hastings Borough Council and has the following technical parameters:
Length: 267 feet (81 m)
Gradient: 78%
Cars: 2
Capacity: 16 passengers per car
Configuration: Double track
Gauge: 5 feet (1.5 m)
Traction: Electricity
The line was opened in 1903 by Hastings Borough Council. The line was originally operated on the water balance principle, and the twin towers of the upper station contained water tanks for this purpose. The line was modernised between 1973 and 1976, during which time it was converted to electric operation and new cars were provided. The line was shut in June 2007 because of an incident where a fault in a control panel caused the cars to fail to stop at the correct point, resulting in damage to both cars and stations. In 2008, Hastings Borough Council decided on a major refurbishment involving new cars and new control and safety systems, together with repairs to the damaged stations. The line reopened in March 2010. Following the closure of lines in Broadstairs and Margate, the East Hill Cliff Railway is now the steepest funicular railway in the United Kingdom. It is complemented by the West Hill Cliff Railway, giving visitors access to Hastings Castle and the Smugglers Adventure in St. Clements Caves.
