The Enormous Cliffs of Moher in Liscannor - Ireland
The Cliffs of Moher are one of Ireland’s most iconic, and most visited, natural attractions. Soaring more 700 feet over the Atlantic Ocean, they stretch from about the village of Doolin, for nearly five miles to Hags Head in County Clare at the southwestern edge of the Burren region. These imposing, breathtaking cliffs also offer some of the most amazing views in the country. If you’re lucky, you’ll hear the beautiful sounds of Irish harpist Tina Mulrooney entertaining visitors with traditional Irish ballads like “Danny Boy” while the ocean waves crash below.

Didn’t realize how afraid of heights I was until we came here! Enjoyed the spectacular beauty but was kind of glad to leave, too. The main trail runs right along the unprotected edge. My daughter enjoyed making me nervous while she spun around near the cliff edge. :-0

CLIFFS of MOHER - Liscannor, Co. Clare, Ireland
The Cliffs of Moher are located at the southwestern edge of the Burren region in County Clare, They run for about 14 kilometres (9 miles). At their southern end, they rise 120 metres (390 ft) above the Atlantic Ocean at Hag's Head, and, 8 kilometres (5 miles) to the north, they reach their maximum height of 214 metres (702 ft) just north of O'Brien's Tower, a round stone tower near the midpoint of the cliffs, built in 1835 by Sir Cornelius O'Brien, then continue at lower heights. The closest settlements are the villages of Liscannor 6 km (4 miles) to the south, and Doolin 7 km (4 miles) to the north.
From the cliffs, and from atop the tower, visitors can see the Aran Islands in Galway Bay, the Maumturks and Twelve Pins mountain ranges to the north in County Galway, and Loop Head to the south. The cliffs rank among the most visited tourist sites in Ireland, with around 1.5 million visits per annum.
The cliffs take their name from an old promontory fort called Mothar or Moher, which once stood on Hag's Head, the southernmost point of the cliffed coast, now the site of Moher Tower.

Die Cliffs of Moher (irisch Aillte an Mhothair) sind die bekanntesten Steilklippen Irlands. Sie liegen an der Südwestküste der irischen Hauptinsel im County Clare nahe den Ortschaften Doolin (nördlich der Klippen) und Liscannor (südlich der Klippen).
Ursprünglich bezeichnete der Begriff eine Gruppe von Bäumen oder Büschen. Auf der Klippe nahe Hag’s Head an der Westküste des County Clare stand einst ein solches Steinfort, genannt Moher O’Ruan (irisch Mothar Uí Ruain, „O’Ruans zerfallenes Fort“). Diese Landmarke gab den Klippen ihren Namen.
Die Klippen ragen an vielen Stellen nahezu senkrecht aus dem atlantischen Ozean und erstrecken sich über mehr als acht Kilometer. Am Südende, dem Hag’s Head, haben sie eine Höhe von ungefähr 120 m, nördlich des O’Brien’s Tower erreichen sie sogar 214 m.
Der O’Brien’s Tower liegt etwa auf der Hälfte der Uferstrecke und entstand 1835 im Auftrag von Sir Cornellius O’Brien als Wachturm. Bei guter Sicht sind von dort aus die Aran Islands und mitunter auch die Galway Bay zu sehen. Jenseits dieser liegen die Maumturk-Berge in Connemara.
Am Kliff leben fast ausschließlich Vögel; eine Zählung ergab 30.000 Tiere in 30 Arten. Die interessantesten sind die atlantischen Papageientaucher, die in großen Kolonien an isolierten Stellen des Kliffs und auf Goat Island leben. Des Weiteren gibt es Falken, Möwen, Krähenscharben, Trottellummen und Alke.
Im Sommer sind die Klippen eine stark besuchte Touristenattraktion. Der zum Besucherzentrum gehörende kostenpflichtige Parkplatz in der Nähe des O’Brien’s Tower ist von Besucherfahrzeugen und Verkaufsständen überfüllt. Für Wanderer und Radfahrer ist der Eintritt frei.
Ein breit ausgebauter Weg lenkt die Touristenströme zunächst einen Hügel hinauf zu den Klippen bis hin zu einer Aussichtsplattform. Ein bis zum Hag’s Head (Ceann na Cailleach) weiterführender, jedoch ungesicherter Weg am Rande der Klippen existiert ebenfalls. Bis Mitte 2013 verhinderte an dessen Beginn allerdings eine Absperrung das Weitergehen. Auf einem Schild wurde in englischer, französischer und deutscher Sprache gebeten, den Weg nicht zu benutzen. Mit Eröffnung des Cliffs Coastal Walk am 14. Juni 2013 entstand ein neuer Weg am Rande der Klippen, der auf dem bisher abgesperrten basierte. Dadurch wurde es möglich, auf einer Strecke von knapp 20 km zwischen Doolin und Liscannor die gesamten Klippen abzulaufen. Dieser neue Weg ist größtenteils unbefestigt und führt teilweise in Form eines Trampelpfads nur wenige Meter vom Klippenrand entfernt die Küstenlinie entlang.
Am 8. Februar 2007 wurde das Besucherzentrum mit befestigten Gehwegen fertiggestellt. Der etwa 200 Meter lange Teil des Besucherwegs, der sich bis zum O’Brien’s Tower erstreckt, wurde aus Sicherheitsgründen seitlich durch bis zu 1,40 Meter hohe Steinplatten begrenzt, so dass die Besucher nicht mehr direkt bis an das Cliff herantreten können. Seitdem ist die Sicht auf die Klippen eingeschränkt. Südlich der Klippen liegt die Felseninsel Bishop’s Island.

O'Brien's Tower marks the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher, a very popular tourist destination in County Clare, Ireland. It is located a short distance from the villages Doolin and Liscannor.
The tower was built on the cliffs in 1835 by local landlord and MP Sir Cornellius O'Brien as an observation tower for the Victorian tourists that frequented the cliffs at the time: strangers visiting the Magnificent Scenery of this neighbourhood. It is said to have initially served as a teahouse, featuring a large round table with seats of ironwork.
Another version tells of O'Brien building the tower in order to impress women he was courting. On a clear day the view can extend as far as Loop Head at the southern tip of Clare and beyond to the mountains of Kerry. Looking north from O'Brien's Tower on clear days, the Twelve Bens in Connemara (also known as the Twelve Pins) beyond Galway Bay can be seen, and typically the Aran Islands to the west.

The cliffs rise 120 meters (394 ft) above the Atlantic Ocean at Hag's Head (Irish: Ceann na Cailleach), and reach their maximum height of 214 meters (702 ft) just north of O'Brien's Tower, eight kilometres away.The cliffs boast one of Ireland's most spectacular views. On a clear day the Aran Islands are visible in Galway Bay, as are the valleys and hills of Connemara.
O'Brien's Tower is a round stone tower at the approximate midpoint of the cliffs. It was built by Sir Cornelius O'Brien, a descendant of Ireland's High King Brian Boru, in order to impress female visitors. From atop that watchtower, one can view the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, the Maum Turk Mountains and the Twelve Pins to the north in Connemara, and Loop Head to the south.
