Outdoors in the Upstate is designed to introduce local Spartanburg high school students to outdoor adventure. Many high school students are not given the opportunity to appreciate and benefit from the outdoor adventures offered right in their area. By pushing themselves toward their goals on hiking, biking, climbing, and kayaking trips, these students will learn skills that can be applied to all aspects of their lives, such as their academic endeavors and college preparation. By collaborating with other students, they will learn communication and leadership skills while enhancing their personal responsibility and self-awareness. In addition to that, they will be having fun in a encouraging environment. The impact from these experiences will stay with them throughout their lives.

Spartan Beast 2018 Spartanburg, South Carolina
Running my first Beast in South Carolina to complete my Trifecta. It was a lot of fun even though I could not convince any of my friends to do it with me. I was able to complete all the obstacles but the rope climb. I plan on doing a lot more of these in the future. AROOOO!

Table Rock Hike Upstate South Carolina
We had a couple of days off and decided to visit our friends in upstate South Carolina. Somebody thought it would be a good idea to hike 4.1 miles up the side of a mountain to the top of Table Rock. Three days later our legs are still feeling it. We hiked to the top once before but this was a new trail to us. We were hoping to meet up with C. Spearman in person but we couldn't get our schedules together... maybe next time.

Why SC counties have trouble tackling abandoned buildings that sit vacant for years
The former Country Hearth Inn motel that caught fire early Tuesday morning has been vacant for at least five years, with no electricity for the last four according to Duke Energy.
Railfanning in Upstate S.C. Vol 3
After being impressed with the railfanning on Tuesday, I decided to go back to upstate South Carolina to do a little more fanning, and was impressed again. Even got CSX into the act this time. Purpose was to take my son to catch the Santa Train on the Greenville and Western, but we always seize an opportunity to get some fanning in.
Enjoy

The newly-crowned Miss South Carolina receives $40,000 scholarship along with the sash and the crown during the finals of the contest at the historic Township Auditorium in Columbia. Jul 2, 2018 AceShowbiz - Davia Bunch from Spartanburg was crowned as Miss South Carolina 2018 on Saturday night, June 30 during the finals of the competition. The event took place at the historic Township Auditorium in Columbia. Davia also won both swimsuit and talent preliminaries, which made her the only double-preliminary winner in this year's pageant. For the talent competition, she performed ballet En Pointe to Feel It Still. Crowned by Miss South Carolina 2017 Suzi Roberts, Davia recieved $40,000 and was marked as the 82nd winner of the scholarship competition. The pageant's Vice President Chaz Elis was also present to help her put on her new sash. After winning the title, Davia explained that it's her mother's death in January 2013 that motivates her to fight harder everyday. I lost my mother to leukemia when I was only fifteen years old, she said. And going through that was something I struggle with for a long time. It was an eight-year battle, it was one I grew up with. But now I can advocate for people with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers. It's something that touches my heart and makes me fight harder every day. Davia, 21, is a political science student at the University of South Carolina. She will take a gap year to do her duties as Miss South Carolina before returning again to the university to complete her degree. She is also set to compete again later at Miss America pageant on September 9. The event will be held in Atlantic City, New Jersey and will air live on ABC. Meanwhile, Miss Greater Greer Sydney Ford was named the first runner-up, followed by second runner-up Miss Clemson Sydney Sill, third runner-up Miss River City Morgan Romano and fourth runner-up Miss Columbia Alexandra Badgett. Miss South Carolina pageant gave out more than $165,000 in scholarship money while the contestants also raised more than $169,000 for the Children's Miracle Network in South Carolina. Assault on Mount Mitchell
MOUNT MITCHELL STATE PARK, N.C. -- Hundreds of cyclists from across the world take on one of the most intense bike races in the southeast, The Assault on Mount Mitchell.
We brought you live coverage as the ride kicked off at 630am Monday morning in Spartanburg.
Some of the cyclists will climb the full 103 miles, all the way to Mount Mitchell State Park. Others will ride about 75 miles, to complete The Assault on Marion race.
Riders say a lot of preparation comes before a race like this, but it's worth it to them.
Spencer Crowe, Greenville SC, every day. Every day of the week, just on the bike.
John Cash, Landrum SC, I just love the atmosphere. I'm a cyclist, I'm an athlete. It's what we do.
Race organizers say one cyclist was injured around 7:15am on Parris Bridge Road in Spartanburg. That rider was taken by ambulance to Spartanburg Regional and is expected to be okay. The extent of the injury is unknown right now.

Greenville County, S.C.: Joining Forces to Fight Rising Inequity
Greenville County, S.C., is one of the fastest growing regions in the United States, with an influx of newcomers drawn to its appealing quality of life. But with a growing income divide and rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods, the region is also one of the toughest places in the country to climb out of poverty. This has motivated private and public partners to search for new ways to fight inequities by challenging deeply ingrained policies and systems.
Their work is guided by a broad definition of health, encouraging collaboration around such issues as access to transportation, the use of data to help raise educational outcomes, investments in affordable housing, and how to connect neighborhoods through an expanding network of trails and bikeways. The journey is not without challenges, but the county’s residents and leaders are working hard to ensure that everyone will be able to benefit from all that the region has to offer.
