Torres del Paine Patagonia by car from El Calafate
if you are too late to reserve the free camping sites on the W-trek you might be looking for alternatives. Since organized tours are pretty expensive (3 days around 290US$ p.P.) renting a car is a comparably cheap alternative.
We booked the car at Sunny Rental in El Calafate for:
1250 ARS per day including 200 km per day
700 ARS for the paper work to cross the border to Chile
2 ARS for every additional kilometer
If you combine the TDP tour with the Perito Moreno Glacier you end up saving money eventually.
Don't forget to refuel in Esperanza when driving to the border at Cerro Castillo. After crossing the border to Chile (it's not allowed to bring any fresh food into Chile) you will pay around 50 US$ p.P entry fee for the National Park TDP.
Since the Torres Central Camping site is normally booked out at high season a good and cheap alternative is to camp next to the Nash Patagonia. The Grandfather rents his lawn with a nice view on the Torres for only 6000 CLP p.P.
The hike to the Torres takes about 8 hours from the Parking lot. Afterwards we were heading to Pehoé lake to camp for another night for 10.000 CLP p.P. Here you can hike up to the Condor Mirador to see the lakes and if you are lucky some Condors.

El Calafate is located at Lago Argentino and is famous for the Perito Moreno glacier which is nearby. With its unique layout facing a peninsula you can get some of the most spectacular glacial views in the world. Several terraces have been built to provide several angles and to get up close.
We ourselves took a cab to the National Park Los Glaciares to have as much time as possible to take pictures, film and watch ice collapse from the front of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
This part of the trip was executed within 2 days and this is what we saw:
- Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Perito Moreno Glacier / Glaciar Perito Moreno
- Lago Argentino
- El Calafate
- Campo Hielo Sur
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next weeks with you. In the next episode we will do the full circuit in Torres del Paine and meet more impressive characters along the way.
The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

Patagonia Road Trip 2019: Torres del Paine, Chalten, Calafate
Spending 2 weeks in Patagonia was road tripping down long dusty dirt roads and across scenic country borders. It was hiking up mountain ridges, kayaking through glacial lakes, and resting in flower fields. It was 70km/hr winds whipping through my hair, wind burn on my face, and the the greeting of many sunrises and sunsets. It was making new friends in tiny mountain side towns, and it was chasing down 10pm dinners with Patagonia beers. It was where hiking boots were fashionable to wear anywhere, and it was how I spent some of the best days of my life.

Up Close! Perito Moreno Glacier, El Calafate, Argentina #Patagonia
The first of our Patagonia adventures!
We booked a day tour with Always Glaciers tour company which included a morning boat ride- taking us closer to the glacier, and allowed us to hike the boardwalk trails. It cost CAD 160.
Another option was to hike on the glacier itself but we thought that we would do more than enough hikes in El Chalten, so we skipped this option. It was also about CAD 100 more expensive, which was not in our budget.
Make sure to visit Perito Moreno when in Argentina! It has breathtaking scenery, and incredible views. Watch for the ice breaking and crashing into the water- it is an experience to remember for a lifetime!

Hiking a GLACIER in Patagonia! Argentina Travel Vlog
One of the best things to do in Calafate, Argentina is hiking the Perito Moreno Glacier. This glacier trek is a full day adventure in Patagonia and offers some amazing views, ice chunks falling into water, learning to walk with crampons, and beautiful shapes created by mother nature.
If you are planning on travelling through Patagonia, this is a must do as it is one of the most easily accessible glaciers in the region. It's also a great learning experience. Definitely don't expect to be the only person there as it was incredibly crowded and it is quite costly - but certainly worth it!

EL CALAFATE - PERITO MORENO Glacier - Argentina | Expedition Patagonia | HD 1080p
The last leg of our Argentine Patagonian Exploration takes us to the wonderland of El Calafate, where we get to experience a very unique creation of mother nature - Glacier Perito Moreno, which is the third largest source of fresh water in this planet (Over 250 sq. Kilometer in size).
This vlog documents this amazing journey where we became super lucky to put our feet on this big chunk of ice, trying to explore various things about a glacier.
This walk on the ice was made possible by Hielo y Aventura, an organization conducting these tour all around a year.

Perito Moreno Mini Trekking: El Calafate Argentina
Florencia and I spent the day trekking the Perito Moreno glacier in Patagonia and made this video. The glacier is about one and a half hours from El Calafate in southern Argentina.
A mini trekking tour lasts roughly 10 hours and can be booked through numerous agencies. We booked our last minute through a VERY expensive tour agency in Germany as spaces were limited. That experience was annoying as we had to pay several hundred dollars extra for a tour that is usually $150. Oh well. its done, and we got to spend the day with the glacier!
The tour begins at 7 am with a bus ride to the national park. Upon arriving at the park, you pay an entrance fee depending on your nationality and then take a boat ride to the glacier where you are suited with ice clamp shoes known as crampons and then it is ice time!
After the ice trek, you return to the boat which takes you to a series of lookout points where you can view the glacier from an alternate vista.
The glacier was not as cold as I thought it would be, or maybe I am just used to being cold. Florencia was frozen, but she's not as accustomed to snow and ice.
The trek was the highlight of my Patagonia trip and El Calafate, and I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone who visits Argentina!

Walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier
During our holiday to South American, we ventured down to El Calafate and took a tour out to Los Glaciares National Park, home of the famous Perito Moreno Glacier which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year.
More info on wikipedia:
We were extremely lucky with the weather, and this day was perhaps the most incredible of the entire trip. We also watched the glacier front calving for some time.
If you are going to Argentina, I would highly recommend getting down to Perito Moreno Glacier.

Patagonia - Perito Moreno Glacier, El Calafate | Argentina
Perito Moreno Glacier is world famous and is still advancing as it fills Lake Argentina. The ice sheet that it emanates from is gigantic, and the third largest concentration of fresh water glaciers in the world. You can take a boat or a kayak to view the glaciers closer, but almost constant iceberg calving creates huge waves. Visitors are required to a safe distance from the towering ice walls. The town of El Calafate is where most visitors stay when on their way to visit this awe-inspiring natural wonder.
