Joshua Tree - Top Things To Do Joshua Tree NP - Best of Joshua Tree National Park
Rock formations, desert mounts, abanded gold mines, world-class rock climbing, cactus, desert Bighorn Sheep and trees that come right out of a Dr. Seuss book, Joshua Tree may be the most unique of all the National Parks. Located just east of Los Angeles (2hrs) and within eyeshot of Palms Springs and the Coachella Valley, it's no wonder that these boulders are a playground for some 3 million active people a year.

1. Arch Rock
Arch Rock Joshua Tree desert loop trail is a short .3.7 mile loop takes you to one of the most famous rock formations in Joshua Tree National Park. The fun and easy hike and scrambling can be done by your whole family and can easily be done in 20mins or much longer depending on how long you're exploring the boulders.
2. Barker Dam Trail -
Hikers of all abilities will love this 1.1-mile loop Barker Dam Hike through the Wonderland of Rocks in Joshua Tree NP. If you’re lucky enough to be traveling in the winter or spring you’ll be treated to a rare sight in the desert, water. This Barker Dam was constructed in the 1900s and provides the only opportunity to photograph reflecting rock formations in its still waters. I suggest you arrive early and after a decent rain to ensure the best photograph results. However, if you’re here in the winter it can get quite cold and you may want to hike this trail in the middle of the day.
3. Ryan Mt Trail
If you're up for a little more of a challenge this 3 mile out and back hike gains over 1,000ft of elevation and gives you a birds-eye view of most of Joshua Tree National Park.
4. Keys View
Keys View is a fantastic vista that rests on the top of the Little San Bernardino Mountains and provides panoramic views of Palms Springs and the Coachella Valley. Its easy access by car makes puts this high on the list of things to do in Joshua Tree. From Keys View, you’ll be able to see the San Andreas Fault. You can also catch a view of Southern California’s two highest mountains, Mount San Jacinto and Mount Gorgonio. On a clear day, you can see California’s largest lake, the Salton Sea.
5. Rock Climbing -
Rock climbing in Joshua Tree National Park is world class and offers traditional crack climbing and bouldering. This high desert monzogranite climbing mecca is famous for its traditional-style crack, slab, and steep face climbing.
The Joshua Tree's has almost 800,000 acres of crack climbing. Thousands of options for sport climbers, slab climbers and a good number of multi-pitch classic routes. There are more than 10,000 climbing routes, 2,000 boulder problems and hundreds of rock formations to scramble on.
6. Cholla Cactus Garden - Joshua Tree
7. Wall Street Mill Trail
This easy 3-mile out-and-back to the Wall Street Mill
8. Hidden Valley
Hidden Valley is one of my favorite parts of Joshua Tree. The 1-mile stroll amongst the boulders and Joshua Trees is fun for the whole family. If you're up for a little more adventure I suggest going climbing.
9. The Chasm Of Doom -
The Chasm Of Doom a scramble, squeeze, craw and climb inside a granite maze amongst giant boulders. This secret set of tunnels and passageways is not for the faint of heart or the claustrophobic and It requires you to be comfortable climbing, scrambling and bouldering in the dark please exercise extreme caution.
How to find the Chasm of Doom -
10. Stargazing
My favorite places to see stars are Ryan Mt, Arch Rock, and Keys View
11. Keys Desert Queen Ranch
You need to book a tour to see this ranch. Be sure to book in advance at the Visitor Center.
12. Lost Horse Mine
13. Geology Road
14. Skull Rock and Jumbo Rocks
If you're short on time Skull Rock can be seen from the road but that doesn't really do it justice. This 1.7-mile stroll in the park is part of Jumbo Rocks and the highlight of the rock formations is Skull Rock. Sure it's just rock formation that looks like a Skull...

Usa California Joshua Tree National Park Campsites
The closest National Park Unit to Los Angeles, Joshua Tree is known as one of the world’s best rock climbing areas, but the desert hiking is fantastic, too. Straddling the transition zone between high and low deserts, trails here climb up prominent peaks, meander through cactus gardens, reach hidden oases, and wander near the ruins of ghost towns. Fantastic stargazing and wilderness camping make this park a must-visit in the cooler months.

VAN LIFE IN JOSHUA TREE, CA I 5 day climbing and camping vlog
Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most magical places we’ve been to. Murphy and I took our honeymoon there nearly 4 years ago, and this week we return to one of our favorite locations to climb, camp, and soak ourselves in nature.
I get a lot of questions around what our typical day to day life is like. In this 5 day vlog we take you along for the good, the bad and the typical. And stay tuned until the end where our friends from San Diego make an appearance and we help them pop their climbing cherry. Enjoy this behinds the scenes glimpse into our #vanlife!
A LITTLE ABOUT US
At the end of 2018, my husband and I sold our yoga studio and 90% of our things and moved into our 1969 VW bus. We travel the United States exploring, rock climbing, adventuring and eating delicious vegan food along the way. Subscribe to follow along with our travels!

If you haven't done it yet - get in the car & drive in the USA. Such a stunning country.
A quick nature & climbing montage from Joshua Tree 2014 with Team Vining, filmed in the morning golden hour.
There was an eagle perched on the top of the rock when we drove up, keeping a keen eye on his domain (highest point for many miles).
Will definitely be back to film some more - filmed on the Panasonic GH4 & DJI Phantom 2 with GoPro Hero 3+ Black in 2.7K (it softened a little when flattened out Premiere Pro).

Video Summary:
Located close to Palm Springs California, Joshua Tree National Park is comprised of the Mojave Desert and Colorado Desert. There are three entrances to the National Park, from the West, North and South. The southern entrance to the park will lead you in through the Colorado desert, where, quite interestingly, you won’t actually find any Joshua Trees.
The activities in Joshua Tree range from camping to very accessible hiking, strenuous hikes, backpacking trips and of course legendary climbing— and let us not forget star gazing. After all, Joshua Tree is dark sky park which means, the little-to-no light pollution allows the stars to put on a magnificent show.
WHERE TO STAY
Of the 16 campgrounds in Joshua Tree National Park, only half of them can be reserved ahead of time. During the low-season, all campgrounds are first-come, first serve. The campground that will work best for you will best be determined by what amenities you are looking for and what area of the park you are most wanting to explore. If you select a campground that is on another side of the park than your areas of most interest, you will end up spending a lot of time in the car traveling from one part of the park to the next. I personally have only stayed at Black Rock Campground but in the future, my eyes are definitely on White Tank Campground, Jumbo Rocks Campground and Ryan Mountain Campground.
During peak season, it is not unusual for the campgrounds to be filled up even mid-week. A great back-up plan to camp is utilizing the BLM dispersed camping that is available outside of the Park’s south entrance. Just remember that this camping is completely primitive.
Another lodging option, that I actually took advantage of during my most recent visit, was the really wonderful AirBNB community in Joshua Tree.
DINING
While Joshua Tree National Park has many picnic areas, there are absolutely no grocery stores or restaurants in the vast National Park. You will need to pack in with you what are you wanting or needing to consume during your trip.
WHERE TO HIKE
There are many miles of hiking available in Joshua Tree National Park. However, some key things to keep in mind are that pets are not permitted on any of the hiking trails. Also, the ten essentials are absolutely necessary for any length of hike in the park. You should absolutely plan to bring more water than you think you need. Even where it is not particularly hot, the desert is very dry and dehydration can sneak up on you.
Hiking with kids or non-hikers. Some places I would recommend visiting in this case would be Skull Rock, Barker Dam and Keys View. If you are looking for a more challenging hike with a still very well defined trail, I would recommend either the Panorama Loop or Ryan Mountain (for an added layer of excitement this can be done to view sunrise or sunset).
There are also trails in Joshua Tree that explore old mines, there’s Lost Palms Oasis as well as Warren Peak. Personally, I would suggest that if you are not particularly well versed in desert orienteering, I would highly suggest that you bring a GPS device. In any case, you should leave a detailed plan of your itinerary with someone that you trust. Getting lost in this desert is not forgiving but easily done.
If you are looking for a backpacking experience, the 8 mile one-way Boy Scout Trail and 35 mile one-way California Riding and Hiking Trail are great options depending on how long you are looking to spend out in the backcountry.

5 Fun Things to Do in Joshua Tree National Park, California | United States Travel Guide
5 Fun Things to Do in Joshua Tree National Park
With its Dr. Seuss-like Joshua trees stretching out across an almost lunar landscape of giant granite boulders and rolling mountains, Joshua Tree National Park is like something out of a children's story book. It's not uncommon to hear people using terms like magical or spiritual to describe how they feel about this park. Visitors come here to walk or hike among the trees, climb the towering rock walls, camp under the stars, capture the beauty in photographs, or simply soak up the tranquility of the desert.
Located where the Mojave and Colorado Deserts meet, the park has a complex landscape, with profoundly different appearances and vegetation depending on the elevation. Some areas are covered with mature Joshua trees as far as the eye can see, and others are completely devoid of these trees but offer their own unique beauty. Well positioned nature paths, hiking trails, and vehicle pullouts are spread throughout the park, providing easy access to this stunning landscape. Let's see five things to do in Joshua Tree National Park in California.
1. Hidden Valley Nature Trail and Day Use Area
2. Keys View
3. Barker Dam Nature Trail
4. Ryan Mountain Hike
5. Cholla Cactus Garden
