Pennsylvania State ParkForest Passport Program Overview - Hike, Camp and Fish Your Way Through PA
In this episode , i discuss the PA State Park and Forest Passport Program. This is such an awesome program for the state of PA and it really showcases how beautiful our state parks and forests are.
I wanted to highlight this book because its a great time of the year to get out and visit these sites around PA. Our state of Pennsylvania is beautiful and its our responsibility to support these areas to preserve them for generations to come.
Plus the information in this book can help you find new water bodies to fish. Its a great way to hike, camp and fish your way around Pennsylvania.
The Passport Book can be found here:
The information on the passport program is here:
Official Write up from PPFF:
Some things just lend themselves to a challenge. People climb mountains “because they’re there.” They visit all 50 states or read the 100 best novels or eat 10 hot dogs at one sitting because it’s county fair time. Our Pennsylvania State Parks & State Forests Passport offers the same — and certainly more healthy — kind of natural challenge.
There are 121 state parks and 20 state forest districts – each with its own special draw. And the Passport has a little box next to the name of each and every one that you can have stamped at the park or forest office or simply record the date (and your own memory or photograph) of your visit. (If you have an older Passport and are missing Park #121, download and print this small insert for Washington Crossing Historic Park. It will print on an Avery 5163 label and fits nicely onto page 116 after Yellow Creek State Park.)
champion tags
Submitting a form contained in the book that you, for example, visited 10 scenic views and vistas or 10 CCC parks, that you participated in 10 environmental education programs or paddled 10 streams or lakes will garner you one of our “champion tags” to hang on your backpack. If you don’t want to cut up your Passport, download a champion tag form right here.
Or you could take on the ultimate challenge and visit each and every one of those parks and forests. From tiny treasures like McCalls Dam State Park to the gigantic lake at Pymatuning State Park, from the highest point in Pennsylvania in the Forbes State Forest to the Delaware State Forest’s Pine Lake Natural Area just think of the adventures you’ll have.
If you’d like a little taste of what to expect check out the video slide show of each state park prepared by DCNR retiree Kenneth Brubaker with help from DCNR.
NEW in 2018! Just in to the PPFF office – our Seen ’em All wearable checklist to commemorate your achievement. Be in touch with us with your stories of adventure from your travels and we’ll reward you with one of your very own.
And we would dearly love to share your photographs, stories, favorite memories. Join the Passport Hall of Fame! Here’s just a few we know about. If we’ve missed you, let us know!
FREEZING COLD WATERFALLS | Ohiopyle, PA
This is Part 2 of our trip to Ohiopyle. We actually show you the waterfalls this time. ;) The water was about 64 degrees.. oh, the things we do for Instagram.
Exploring the town of Ohiopyle & Falls in Ohiopyle State Park, PA (Start of LHHT Ultra 70 mile)
In this video I take you from Near the Gate that marks the start (Mile 0) Southern Terminus of the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail through the Town of Ohiopyle (located in Ohiopyle State Park). I pass Wilderness Voyageurs, and walk across the Youghiogheny River via PA State Route 381 South for a view of the Falls. This area is very popular with Kayakers and rafters. Next I head back to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge, which is part of the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) Bicycle Trail, and walk across the Youghiogheny River from this higher bridge to return to the parking lot where my vehicle is parked.

What to Do in Ohiopyle: Rafting, Biking, Hiking, Fishing, State Park
Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania is the outdoor adventure center of the state. Located only an hour southeast of Pittsburgh, half hour from Morgantown, WV and within easy driving distance of DC and Cleveland, Ohiopyle is a mecca for outdoor activities (year-round actually!). Wilderness Voyageurs is the oldest adventure company on the east coast, and knows the Ohiopyle region better than any other company. There's fantastic white water rafting on the Youghiogheny River with three different sections and adventure levels: Lower Yough, Middle Yough and Upper Yough, plus other like the Savage River and Cheat River. Wilderness Voyageurs has a fully stocked expert fly shop right there at the Yough river's edge, and offers lessons, trips, and special clinics for kids and women. The famous Great Allegheny Passage Rail trail travels right by Wilderness Voyageurs, where you can rent a bike, and tackle the GAP trail or single track of Ohiopyle State Park and Laurel Highlands. There are popular hiking trails in the park, too. Want to try rock climbing? This is the place to do it! This adventure company understands great espresso, delicious food, the importance of over 50 microbrews, and how the best gear brands make all the difference! Enjoy their coffee shop, pub, and outfitters store on-site next to the Yough River.
