Bariloche in Argentina is located at the northern end of the region Patagonia and serves as the perfect gateway to start our adventure. Surrounded by lakes and situated close to the Andes you can go for big variety of activities. While it is one of the largest ski ressorts in South America in winter it turns into a hikers paradise in summer.
Rather than hanging out in the city itself we used it as a base to drive around the 7 lakes, hike & camp to the Tronador and climbed our way up to Frey, Cerro Campanario and Catedral. With this we can give you a bigger picture of the area and you can easily use this video as a Bariloche Guide for your own trip!
This part of the trip was executed within 1,5 weeks by using the local buses and a well planned itinerary after we flew in from Buenos Aries - following I list all the places we visited & Things to do in Bariloche:
- Chocolateria Rapa Nui
- Cerro Campanario
- San Martin de los Andes
- Circuito de los 7 Lagos
- Villa La Angostura
- Center of Bariloche
- Villa Catedral
- Cerro Catedral
- Refugio Frey
- Refugio Otto Meiling
- Cerro Tronador
- Pampa Linda
- Glaciar Castaño Overo
I'm excited to share all our experiences in Patagonia over the course of the next 8 weeks with you. In the next episodes we will Hitchhike the Carretera Austral, trek through the most impressive mountain ranges, ice hike over the glaciers of the southern Patagonian Icefield and meet impressive characters along the way.
The Patagonian Expedition is a 95% self funded video documentary project following my trip in 2012/2013. Our aim is to show you the beauty of the rather unknown parts in Patagonia alongside with the famous spots.
Beside beautiful landscape you can expect loads of information and our personal experiences and struggles along the way.

Mount Tronador 3491m in the Nahuel Huapi National Park near to Bariloche in Argentina. It is an extinct stratovolcano in the Southern Andes in Patagonia which you can ski backcountry, climb and ski tour on.
The mountain was named Thunder by the locals in reference to the sound of the falling seracs. The mountain hosts 8 glaciers and three summits. The first solo ascent on Pico International was by a German Herman Claussen in 1934.

Join us for our trip to Bariloche Argentina! We arrived in this picture perfect town near the Chilean Border from Buenos Aires with Aerolineas Argentinas and we even got to fly business class. Sweeeet….
Bariloche is a famous ski resort that is packed with tourists practicing winter sports anytime from late June to September. However, for the adventurers that happen to be there during the summer (like us) this South American ski center transforms into paradise with stunning forests, mountains, and lakes as far as the eye can see in the Patagonian Lake District. The mountains are green and the city looks more like a gigantic garden full of flowers in every color imaginable. This is the perfect time in Bariloche for other outdoor activities such as trekking, bike riding and swimming in one of the many lakes.
Or if you have limited time rent a car and do a roadtrip around the 7 lakes. We did just that and didn’t regret it. The experience was breathtaking...
Enjoy the video and make sure you let us know where you’re watching from!

San Carlos de Bariloche
The chocolate city of San Carlos de Bariloche has an abundance of spectacular surroundings and it would take more than one lifetime to explore it all. Join us on a very short trip through this beautiful area.
Sightseeing around BARILOCHE Argentina!! | 336
17 November 2019 - Day 87 - Bariloche | 336
Day 87 - Today we go out exploring on the outskirts of San Carlos de Bariloche and make our way to Cerro Campanario! A small viewpoint on a hill just 17km from town, it’s a nice and cruisy activity to go sightseeing around Bariloche for the afternoon. ????????
First we buy our bus card and food for the day. One very noticeable thing was that prices here are a lot more cheaper than Chile! A large burger meal with chips at a restaurant only cost me 350p ($9AUD) ???? ????. You can’t even get that at Maccas for a little Big Mac!
We arrive at Cerro Campanario where you have the option to go up a $10 teleferico or a 30min steep walk up. Of course I opted the later. Though not a very scenic walk up the dirt trail, we are rewarded with stunning views of several lakes, snow topped mountains and the region of Llao Llao! ????????
The original plan was to spend the afternoon hiking through Llao Llao but rain came and the weather decided to turn, and so did I. Back at the hostel for a chilled evening with a late dinner to end out first full day here in Bariloche! ????????

After spending 2 days in Bariloche, we decided to rent a car and hit the road to San Martin de los Andes, going through the routes of the seven lakes with a stop over at Cerro Campanario. Amazing view from up there!
The drive took approx. 3 hours, and we picked up two hitchhikers friends: Niko and Francis along the way. They were mucisians from Buenos Aires and we ended up partying with them the whole night. Hitch hiking is very common on the part of Argentina.
Amazing road trip- passing through beautiful lakes along the way. Had fantastic time driving and discovering more of Argentina!

The best things to do in Bariloche, Argentina go beyond skiing. The city has a wealth of activities for you to enjoy during summer and winter. It is also worth nothing that Bariloche attractions are an eyeful. Set in the Nahuel Huapi National Park on the foothills of Andes Mountains near the Nahuel Huapi Lake, you couldn't help but fall in love with the stunning scenery surrounding San Carlos de Bariloche.
Bariloche is one of the most popular Argentina attractions. It earned its reputation as a premier skiing destination. During your trip there, you can still take part in other adventures in Bariloche.
Best Things To Do In Bariloche During Summer
Going hiking is one of the most commonly enjoyed summertime activities and adventures in Bariloche. You can take a professional tour guide with you as you go hiking in Bariloche, or you can go alone or with your friends.
Bariloche guided hiking tours are offered at the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Guided bilingual hikes of Maxi Schoffel, a mountain within the park, is also offered to guests. Other Bariloche hiking trails are in Cerro Catedral, Cerro Campanario, Cerro Frey, Cerro López, Cerro Otto, Cerro Tronador, and Circuito Chico. Each of these trails has a different degree of difficulty and a unique view.
Cerro Catedral is where you'll find the largest ski center in South America. The mountain also has a hiking trail leading to Frey refugio. Cerro Campanario has great views of lakes and mountains that surround it. Cerro Frey is one of the most popular and beautiful hiking destinations in Bariloche. It takes a day or two to complete the trek. Cerro López is open for hiking in the late spring, early autumn, and the whole of summer. The hike to the mountain shelter in Cerro López is admittedly tiring but will reward you with impressive views. Hiking Cerro Tronador is even more rewarding as you get to see many of natural attractions in Bariloche. This includes the black glacier and Saltillo de las Nalcas, a waterfall that pours over an overhanging cliff. And finally, there is the 60-km Circuito Chico.
One of the top things to do in Bariloche during summer is biking. It is a popular activity enjoyed by biking enthusiasts and professionals alike. You can take a mountain bike to some of the Bariloche's hiking trails such as Cerro Otto and Circuito Chico.
The Alpine slide in this video is typically undermined and yet it is one of the most fun things to do in Bariloche. It is also called a Toboggan. The Toboggan slide involves riding a plastic sled (with breaks) down a winding cement track. The Toboggan ride starts at the peak of Cerro Viejo and runs all the way down to the bottom of the hill. For other Bariloche summer adventures besides the Alpine slide, biking, and hiking, check out the list below.
1. Boat excursions to Bosque Arrayanes and Puerto Blest
2. Cruising in Lake Nahuel Huapi
3. Rafting in Rio Limay or Rio Manso
4. Kayaking in Gutierrez Lake
5. Paragliding in Cerro Otto or Cerro Catedral
6. Horseriding at the Nahuel Huapi National Park
7. Historic steam train ride at the 1912 railway
8. Climbing the granite agujas in Cerro Frey
Best Things To Do In Bariloche During Winter
The most popular Bariloche adventure fit for winter is skiing. You can go skiing in Cerro Catedral during winter. But you can do other things and take advantage of alternative winter activities in Bariloche. For example, when the lake in Cerro Frey freezes during winter, you can skate on top of it. During winter, snowboarding is also one of the top things to do in Bariloche. Cerro Catedral is a great venue for snowboarding.

San Carlos de Bariloche Travel Guide - Argentina Beautiful Experience
San Carlos de Bariloche Travel Guide - Argentina Beautiful Experience
San Carlos de Bariloche is a city in the province of Río Negro, Argentina, situated on the foothills of the Andes, surrounded by lakes (Nahuel Huapi, Gutiérrez Lake, Moreno Lake and Mascardi Lake) and mountains (Tronador, Cerro Catedral, Cerro López). It is famous for skiing but also great for sight-seeing, water sports, trekking and climbing. Another claim to fame is its Swiss-like atmosphere and its chocolate boutiques and breweries. Look for the St. Bernard dogs on display for tourists.
San Carlos de Bariloche is located within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. After development of extensive public works and Alpine-styled architecture, the city emerged in the 1930s and 1940s as a major tourism centre with skiing, trekking and mountaineering facilities. In addition, it has numerous restaurants, cafés, and chocolate shops.
Tourism, both domestic and international, is the main economic activity of Bariloche throughout the year. The city is very popular with Brazilians and Europeans. One of the most popular activities is skiing, and most tourists visit Bariloche in winter (June–September). Regular flights from Buenos Aires via LAN airlines and Aerolíneas Argentinas serve the city year round. The main ski slopes are the ones at Cerro Catedral, the biggest ski resort in South America and in the southern hemisphere. During the summer, beautiful beaches such as Playa Bonita and Villa Tacul welcome sun-bathers; brave lake swimmers venture into its cold waters (chilled by melting snow). Lake Nahuel Huapi averages 14 °C in the summertime. Bariloche is the biggest city of a huge Lakes District, and it serves as a base for many excursions in the region. Activities such as fishing, whitewater rafting, and birdwatching are popular with tourists. Trekking in the nearby mountain wilderness is supported by a few high-mountain huts operated by the Club Andino Bariloche. The city is also noted for its chocolates and Swiss-style architecture. Many high school students in Argentina take a senior trip to Bariloche, and the town is well prepared to host these kinds of groups.
The city is served by San Carlos de Bariloche International Airport (IATA BRC/ICAO SAZS) equipped to receive any kind of aircraft. Several of Argentina's most important airlines maintain regular flights to Bariloche, as well as some international lines from neighbouring countries, especially during the ski season. The city is linked by train with the city of Viedma through the Tren Patagonico that crosses Argentina from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean. San Carlos de Bariloche lies close to the Chilean border and is connected to Chile by the Cardenal Antonio Samoré Pass crossing the Andes Mountains. The city has a terminal railway station that links it to Viedma. The main Neighbourhoods are Belgrano, Jardín Botánico, Melipal, Centro, Las Victorias, Las Marias, Dos Valles, and Playa Bonita.
The soaring peaks of Cerros Catedral, López, Nireco and Shaihuenque (to name just a few) – all well over 2000m high – ring the town, giving picture-postcard views in nearly every direction. These mountains aren’t just for gazing, though – excellent snow coverage (sometimes exceeding 2m at the end of the season) makes this a winter wonderland, and a magnet for skiers and snowboarders. In summertime the nature buffs take over, hitting the hills to climb, hike trails, fish for trout and ride mountain bikes and horses.
