Down By the Bay 2016 (Pt. 35) - Wine Tasting at Cline Cellars, Sonoma County
October 27, 2016 - On our first day in California's Sonoma County - aka, Wine Country - Sophie and I visited a few wineries just before they closed at 6pm. Here, we are at Cline Cellars, a small winery with some delicious products. Sophie bought a piont gris (I think?) made for the 2014 World Series winning San Francisco Giants; it was heavily discounted as they were not currently in the playoffs by the time we arrived.
Across the street is the castle of Jacuzzi Family Vineyards, which was also pretty good.

In 1939, the California Mission Models made their debut at the Worlds Fair at Treasure Island. Their construction was based upon two years of research and was completed by a team of German cabinetmakers under the direction of Italian artist Leon Bayard de Volo. All were designed to scale, are faithful representations of the original missions, and are finely detailed down to the shrubbery and the figures utilized. Materials used in their construction include wood, clay, glass, cast iron, paperboard and real plant material. As a collection, the models are acclaimed as an extraordinary and accurate depiction of California history.

Cline Family Cellars Solar Panel System by SolarCraft
A 411 kW Solar Energy System at Cline Family Cellars in Sonoma, CA - designed & installed by SolarCraft of Novato, CA. Offsets 100% of the winery's electrical usage.
SolarCraft was able to design a lightweight aluminum mounting structure that works well with the structural capacity of the winery’s steel warehouse and fermentation buildings, while giving the panels a slight tilt directly south. The winery’s roof is roughly 50,000 square feet and now supports just under two thousand Sharp solar panels. The 34,625 square feet of high capacity solar panels will generate roughly 411 kilowatts, providing 100% of the winery’s annual energy consumption. In fact, the solar panels will generate so much energy that the winery also contracted SolarCraft to completely upgrade its electrical infrastructure to support the increased capacity.
Cline Cellars first considered the switch to solar in 2003. While researching designers and installers, the winery realized that state rebates per kilowatt were dropping. The winery’s management decided to take action before rebates dropped further. In 2004, Cline Cellars awarded SolarCraft the contract to design and build their system. SolarCraft immediately assisted Cline with the applications for the solar energy rebate program with the Public Utilities Commission. In March 2005 the PUC approved the project.
Cline Cellars’ goal is to be energy independent – creating predictable energy and costs. Towards that goal, SolarCraft Services first assessed and reduced the winery’s energy demands. In 2004, SolarCraft advised Cline Cellars to install energy saving lights throughout the facility and add a new urethane, foam-insulating roof that reduces cooling costs in the summer by up to 30 percent.
“The current state and federal incentives make solar electric systems a viable investment for all types of businesses,” says Chris Bunas, Director of PV Systems Division at SolarCraft. “With energy costs skyrocketing, smart companies like Cline Cellars are now looking for ways to reduce and set their facility operations expenses for the long term. With 25 year warranties and 40+ year design life on the major system components, this system will be positively affecting Cline’s bottom line for many years to come.”
“SolarCraft worked with us every step of the way. We are very happy with the form and function of the panels,” says Cline Cellars’ Director of Operations, Peggy Phelan. “This has been a win/win/win project from the beginning. The winery is eliminating huge energy bills, flat-lining our operating budget for energy costs, and improving air quality by reducing 690,000 lbs. of noxious greenhouse gases per year. Project timing was ideal to capture both the state rebate incentive and new federal tax credits.”
Solar Electric is ideal for wineries,” says Bill Stewart, co-founder and owner of SolarCraft Services. “By utilizing existing roof space to generate electricity on site, Cline Cellars is helping to reduce peak electricity demand for others, while exhibiting sustainable winemaking and business practices”.
The project features an educational component to it as well. Cline Cellars hosts frequent tours of their on-site “California Missions Museum” for North Bay children who are in the fourth grade and studying California history. A new addition to the winery tour will be a solar kiosk where students can learn about solar power and actually see the amount of energy the winery is generating from the sun.

Jacuzzi Family Vineyards and Winery FastMix, Sonoma Valley, California, USA
The Jacuzzi Family Vineyards & Winery owns and farms grapes at its estate in Sonoma-Carneros and the Sonoma Coast appellation, specifically the Petaluma Gap.
Carneros stretches across the cool southern extremities of both Sonoma and Napa counties while it touches the historic flatlands north of San Pablo Bay. Jacuzzi Family Vineyards sits on 190 acres at Arnold Drive in Sonoma-Carneros.
Pacific fog and coastal wind are what sets this appellation apart. In the scorching afternoons, bay winds glide over the vineyards, mitigating the blistering California heat. The vines are planted in volcanic soil and adobe clay. This area is best known for producing outstanding Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It's also been a great growing region for our Barbera and Sangiovese.
History:
The Jacuzzi trek to America started in 1907, when Valeriano and Francesco Jacuzzi, the second- and third-born sons of Giovanni and Teresa Jacuzzi, immigrated to Washington to work on the railroad. A warmer climate beckoned and the pair eventually made their way to southern California. Years later, they were joined by four other brothers and eventually all went to work in the aviation industry. Soon they would make American history.
In 1911 their father, Giovanni, a skilled wood worker and vineyard farmer joined them. Two weeks was enough to convince him that his sons would never go back. He then returned to Italy with Valeriano to gather up the rest of the family.
World War I intervened and the trip was delayed until the war's end. During this time, Valeriano had met Giuseppina and fell in love, married and had their first child. Valeriano's new family, parents and remaining siblings departed from Italy in 1920.
Soon after their arrival in early 1921, Valeriano started working with his brothers at their Jacuzzi Brothers factory. A tragic crash, over Modesto, of Jacuzzi's first enclosed monoplane took several lives, including that of Valeriano's brother, Giocondo. At this time, Giovanni asked his sons to cease making planes. Valeriano moved his family to Northern California and purchased a 161-acre farm in Contra Costa County.
During the depression, Valeriano, with help from his older children, planted a portion of the open farm fields with grapes and in 1936 he applied for a license to make wine for home consumption. At that time he was limited to 200 gallons (approximately 84 cases). The vineyard was planted to Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvedre and he sold grapes for $30-$35 a ton.
In 1937, Valeriano returned to work with his brothers at Jacuzzi Brothers, Inc. located in Berkeley, CA where they manufactured water well pumps and eventually, the bath and spa that bears their name.

SolarCraft Power System by SolarCraft ~ Jacuzzi Family Vineyards of Sonoma, CA
Sonoma winery, Jacuzzi Family Vineyards installs a 124 kW solar electric system with SolarCraft and powers facility with renewable solar energy.
The 124 kW solar electric system at Jacuzzi Family Vineyards in comprised of two separate solar energy systems. Each system uses 374 Mitsubishi Electric 165 watt panels and one Satcon 50 kW inverter, for a total system use of 748 solar panels and 2 inverters.
Going solar is part of Jacuzzi Family Vineyard’s commitment to environmentally conscious business and sustainable farming practices. Mitsubishi Electric solar panels are the most eco-friendly solar panels available. They are the first to use 100% lead-free solder in their solar panels.
“Our commitment to sustainable business practices is extremely important to us and it’s a great feeling to know that our winery is being powered by solar energy. Overall, I am impressed with how painless the process was from start to finish. Fred Cline, Jacuzzi Family Vineyard
The system is 124 kW DC power and is CEC rated at 103 kW AC power. The solar electric system will produce an estimated 185,130 kWh annually, not including any additional production from the tracking array which could potentially add an additional 37,026 kWh annually, for a total of 222,156 kWh.
The new solar energy system generates enough clean electricity each day to power 82 average homes. The new system will spare the air nearly 91 tons of harmful greenhouse gases annually, or 2,726 tons over the life of the system. Over the next 30 years, the air pollution saved will be equivalent to driving over 6.3 million miles. This is equivalent to planting over 18 acres of trees.
Each of the two systems connects to a separate PG&E electric meter, each of which provides electricity to the Jacuzzi Winery Building and the Water Well and Fire Pumps. There are two main PG&E meters servicing the entire property, thus the two separate solar energy systems.
One solar energy system provides nearly 100% of the electricity for the Water Well and Fire Pumps. This 61.7 kW system is comprised of two different mounting systems that hold the solar panels in a fixed position facing directly south. Single pole mount & ground-mount structures were used due to limited ground space. The single pole mounting was used to ensure the panels were above any tree shading.
The second structure consists of long rows of ground-mounted panels east to west. Located in the south and southeastern section of the Solar Field, both are fixed mounted, tilted directly south.
The remaining 61.7 kW portion is mounted on a Single Axis Tracking system, allowing the solar panels to follow the sun throughout the day, providing 15-20% more energy production. This system provides electricity to the winery building and is located closest to the building, mounted in long rows north to south.
A solar energy panel produces the greatest amount of electricity when it is perpendicular to the sun - as opposed to an angle. A single axis solar tracking system enables the solar panels to follow the sun as it travels through the sky each day. The panels start the morning facing east where the sun rises, at noon they are flat, finally facing west at the end of the day. The system returns to east at sundown and waits for the whole process to begin again the next morning. This system requires more square footage, so it was determined that only the Winery building will get a tracking system due to space constraints.
The system is currently the largest test case known for comparison between tracking and fixed arrays with identical equipment on the same site. SolarCraft will be monitoring the system very closely with a remote monitoring system and using the data to determine the exact benefits versus cost of tracking systems.
The system it expected to pay for itself 6 years. By taking advantage of the federal tax credit, state rebates, and accelerated depreciation, Jacuzzi Vineyards was able to reduce the total system cost by nearly 75%.

MITZPAH HOTEL - TONAPAH NV FULL SHOW HAUNTED
The Mizpah Hotel is a historic hotel in Tonopah, Nevada. Mizpah Hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.[2]
The five-story Mizpah was the tallest building in Nevada until 1929.[3] It was named after the Mizpah Mine[4] and was the social hub of Tonopah. The hotel was pre-dated by the Mizpah Saloon, which opened in 1907, and was the first permanent structure in Tonopah.[5][6] The hotel was financed by George Wingfield, George S. Nixon, Cal Brougher and Bob Govan and designed by George E. Holesworth of Reno, Nevada[5] (other sources state that the architect was Morrill J. Curtis). Brougher in particular was involved with the Belmont, Tonopah, Midway and Tonopah Mining Company and the Tonopah Divide Mining Company. Brougher owned the Tonopah Banking Corporation, which had an office in the lobby of the 1905 building, and was a director of the Bank of Italy in San Francisco.[7]
The reinforced concrete hotel was faced with stone on the front and brick on the sides and rear. The neighboring three-story Brougher-Govan Block, with rooms on the upper floors, served as the first Mizpah and remains connected. Cast iron columns were used in the windows and fire escapes. The three and five story buildings are joined with a wood stairway crowned with a skylight. Steam heat was provided, along with the first elevator in Tonopah.[5]
According to legend, Wyatt Earp kept the saloon, Jack Dempsey was a bouncer, and Howard Hughes married Jean Peters at the Mizpah. But Wyatt Earp left Tonopah before the Mizpah was built, Hughes was married in Tonopah, but not at the Mizpah, and Dempsey asserted he was never a bouncer.[8] The hotel nevertheless features the Jack Dempsey Room and the Wyatt Earp Bar.[3]
The hotel is said to house a ghost deemed the Lady in Red by hotel guests who have experienced her presence. Legend says that the Lady in Red is the ghost of a prostitute who was beaten and murdered on the fifth floor of the hotel by a jealous ex-boyfriend. Another widely accepted description of the events is that The Lady in Red had been caught cheating by her husband at the hotel after he had missed a train, who then proceeded to kill her in a jealous rage. The Lady in Red haunting of the Mizpah was featured in season 5, episode 2 of Ghost Adventures on the Travel Channel.[9]
The hotel had been shuttered since 1999, but in early 2011, the hotel was purchased by Fred and Nancy Cline of Cline Cellars, Sonoma, Calif., who renovated and reopened the building to the public in August 2011.[10] [11] The newly renovated hotel features 47 rooms, a bar, and two restaurants; The Pittman Cafe and the more upscale Jack Dempsey Room. There are plans to renovate further rooms in the hotel annex and to add a small casino to the property.
