Maryport in Cumbria A great place to visit
Welcome to Maryport, the Queen of the Solway.
This hidden gem situated near the Lakes and by the sea is well worth a visit - as some of the north's best-loved and most well-known artists have discovered.
Apart from being a family destination with plenty of fun activities available, Maryport has a history that dates back to Roman times. Much of its architecture reflects its Georgian history.
The harbour has been painted by such greats as LS Lowry, Percy Kelly and Sheila Fell. In fact, the harbourside fishermen's church, Christ Church has featured in several Kelly paintings even when they are not of Maryport!
If you are interested in a free day out there are plenty of walks and cycle paths around the town and leading down the Solway coast, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. If walking and pedalling sounds like too much work, try and electric bike, avaialbe for hire.
There are several festivals throughout the year including the nationally renowned Blues Festival, the carnival and trawler race. This latter sees our fishing trawlers taking on others from the Isle of Man and the west coast in a colourful and exciting race up and down the coast.
There are lively clubs and pubs, a selection of independent shops and plenty of welcoming faces to meet and greet you.
For the young and young at heart there is a fantastic climbing feature, Clip 'n' Climb. This is only the second of its kind in the UK and well worth a try. Have a go, too, at the go-karting, visit the aquarium - and there is far more to see, do, visit, eat and drink as you will discover through this booklet and when you come and see us.
Maryport is the southernmost town on the Solway Firth. It is on the A596 with direct links to Carlisle in the north and Workington to the south. It is also easily accessible from the Lakes via the A66 and the A594. Maryport railway station is on the Cumbrian Coast Line and is one of the selected scenic rail lines, served by Northern Rail. There are regular train and bus services to the town. If you are visiting by boat then the Maryport Marina is a gorgeous place to stay at a fraction of the cost of many other places and close to the town centre.
If you have never been here before come and visit. You'll be glad you did.
