7 world-famous timepieces to remind you the clocks are about to go forward

Go on, admit it, the clocks changing has caught you out at least once. Though it happens twice a year – quite literally like clockwork – these time shifts always catch some of us off guard.
So, in honour of the clocks going forward, here’s a few famous ones to help keep time at the forefront of your mind. Some are large, some are elaborate, and some are almost as old as time itself…
1. Big Ben, London
Without question the best-known time-teller in the world, Big Ben’s chimes have kept the pace of the nation since its big debut in 1859.
The clock’s bell weighs 13 tons, is accurate to within one second, and tolled through the blitz without skipping a beat. Beneath the bell lies a Latin inscription meaning, ‘O Lord, keep safe our Queen Victoria the First’.
But despite its incomparable fame, there are plenty of misconceptions about our national timepiece. The clock tower is actually called Elizabeth Tower, and the moniker ‘Big Ben’ is no more than a nickname for the bell.
2. Astronomical Clock, Prague
Everyone loves an antique, and there’s something particularly poetic about the age of a clock.
Mounted on the old Prague town hall, this monument to medieval science features a dial representing the position of sun, moon and stars, and the skeletal figure of Death striking each hour. Installed in 1410, it is thought to be the third oldest astronomical clock in existence, and the oldest to still be operational.
Sparkling splendidly after a recent restoration, it now looks as much like concept art representing time, as it does something to actually tell it.
3. Floral Clock, Canada
Do you remember those potato clocks you (probably) used to make at school, where you could tell the time from a display, some electrodes and an ordinary pair of spuds?
This herbaceous offering in Ontario, Canada, uses rather more attractive vegetation to create one of the most Instagrammable clocks around.
Consisting of 16,000 carpet bedding plants which are changed at least twice a year, it’s gone through a whole host of designs, all of which can be viewed in photo form in the small accompanying tower.
The clock probably doesn’t get all the attention it deserves – an occupational hazard of being mere moments from Niagara Falls.
4. Royal Hotel Clock Tower, Mecca
This vertiginous time-teller is a who’s who of clock-related records.
Each of the clock faces has a diameter of 43m and rises 450m from the ground – making them the largest and highest architectural clocks in existence. The accompanying tower (the Mecca Royal Clock Tower – a luxury hotel) is the third tallest building in the world, and stands just metres from Islam holy site, the Great Mosque of Mecca.
There’s one major drawback to this remarkable project – on a cloudy day, you won’t see a thing.
5. Rathaus-Glockenspiel, Munich
It’s not the biggest or oldest clock on this list, but it might just be the most intricate.
Two or three times a day (depending on the time of year), this bizarre little clock in Marienplatz marks the hour by wheeling around a series of figurines acting out scenes from local folklore. There are jousting knights, twirling courtiers, and a good 15 minutes of jangling.
Think of it as a cuckoo clock with 32 different figures and 43 bells, or a really, really classy puppet show.
6. Cosmo Clock 21, Yokohama
Perhaps the simplest way to make an interesting clock is to make something that’s independently interesting, and then slap a digital display on it.
That seems to be the strategy behind Cosmo Clock 21 in Yokohama – which was the largest ferris wheel in the world on its completion in 1989.
Though a fellow Japanese wheel snaffled that record just three years later, it’s now become a local landmark and after dark it lights up like a firework display. It’s a premium date place too – and for obvious reasons, it’s unwise to be late.
7. Spasskaya Tower, Moscow
What Big Ben is for the Houses of Parliament, Spasskaya Tower is for the Kremlin.
The clock itself is more journeyman than showstopper – 20ft face with an almost 3m hour hand and black-and-gold paintwork; a solid 7/10 – but the setting alone makes it a shoo-in for our list. This historic timepiece has lived through Tsarism, Stalinism, and, er, whatever Russia is now.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Longest Day is a mammoth, all-star re-creation of the D-Day invasion, personally orchestrated by Darryl F. Zanuck. Whenever possible, the original locations were utilized, and an all-star international cast impersonates the people involved, from high-ranking officials to ordinary GIs. Each actor speaks in his or her native language with subtitles translating for the benefit of the audience (alternate takes were made of each scene with the foreign actors speaking English, but these were seen only during the first network telecast of the film in 1972). The stars are listed alphabetically, with the exception of John Wayne, who as Lt. Colonel Vandervoort gets separate billing. Others in the huge cast include Eddie Albert, Jean-Louis Barrault, Richard Burton, Red Buttons, Sean Connery, Henry Fonda, Gert Frobe, Curt Jurgens, Peter Lawford, Robert Mitchum, Kenneth More, Edmond O'Brien, Robert Ryan, Jean Servais, Rod Steiger and Robert Wagner. Paul Anka, who wrote the film's title song, shows up as an Army private. Scenes include the Allies parachuting into Ste. Mere Englise, where the paratroopers were mowed down by German bullets; a real-life sequence wherein the German and Allied troops unwittingly march side by side in the dark of night; and a spectacular three-minute overhead shot of the troops fighting and dying in the streets of Quistreham. The last major black-and-white road-show attraction, The Longest Day made millions, enough to recoup some of the cost of 20th Century Fox's concurrently produced Cleopatra.

Elizabeth kept the curtains of the litter pulled back as she entered the city, and the citizens were able to see her pale, frightened face. She had good cause for her fear; the heads and corpses of Wyatt and his supporters were thrust upon spikes and gibbets throughout the city. The queen waited for her at Whitehall but they did not meet immediately. First, Elizabeth's household was dismissed and she was told that she must undergo close interrogation about her activities. She was questioned by the unfriendly bishop of Winchester, Stephen Gardiner, but she was not intimidated. She denied any involvement in the rebellion and repeatedly asked to see the queen. But she was told that Mary was leaving for Oxford where she would hold a Parliament. Elizabeth would be leaving Whitehall as well, though at first the council could not decide where to send her. No councilor wanted the responsibility of keeping her in close confinement at their homes; it was too unpleasant and potentially dangerous. And so Gardiner and Renard had their way and she went to the Tower of London. The earl of Sussex and the marquess of Winchester were sent to escort her from Whitehall.
Elizabeth was terrified. The mere mention of the Tower was enough to shatter her already fragile nerves. She begged to be allowed to write to her sister, and the men agreed. Written on 17 March 1554, the letter was long, rambling, and repetitious but proof of her fear and trepidation: It is known as The Tides Letter.

After finishing her letter, she carefully drew lines throughout the rest of the blank sheet so no forgeries could be added, and she signed it 'I humbly crave but one word of answer from yourself. Your Highness's most faithful subject that hath been from the beginning and will be to my end, Elizabeth'.
The letter had taken too long to write; they had missed the tide. They could wait a few hours and take her to the Tower in the darkest part of night, but the council disagreed. There could be an attempt to rescue her under cover of darkness. They decided to wait until the next morning, Palm Sunday, when the streets would be nearly deserted since everyone would be in church. Meanwhile, her letter was sent to Mary who received it angrily and refused to read it through. She had not given permission for it to be written or sent, and she rebuked her councilors fiercely.
The next morning, 18 March 1554, arrived cold and grey; there was a steady rain. At 9 o'clock in the morning, Elizabeth was taken from her rooms and through the garden to where the barge waited. She was accompanied by six of her ladies and two gentleman-attendants. She waited under a canopy until the barge began to slow; she then saw that they would enter beneath Traitor's Gate, beneath St Thomas's Tower. This was the traditional entrance for prisoners returned to their cells after trial at Westminster. The sight terrified her and she begged to be allowed entry by any other gate. Her request was refused. She was offered a cloak to protect her from the rain but she pushed it aside angrily. Upon stepping onto the landing, she declared, 'Here landeth as true a subject, being prisoner, as ever landed at these stairs. Before Thee, O God, do I speak it, having no other friend but Thee alone.' She then noticed the yeoman warders gathered to receive her beyond the gate. 'Oh Lord,' she said loudly, 'I never thought to have come in here as a prisoner, and I pray you all bear me witness that I come in as no traitor but as true a woman to the Queen's Majesty as any as is now living.' Several of the warders stepped forward and bowed before her, and one called out, 'God preserve your Grace.'
She still refused to enter the Tower. After the warder's declaration, she sat upon a stone and would not move. The Lieutenant of the Tower, Sir John Brydges, said to her, 'You had best come in, Madame, for here you sit unwholesomely.' Elizabeth replied with feeling, 'Better sit here, than in a worse place, for God knoweth where you will bring me.' And so she sat until one of her attendants burst into tears. She was taken to the Bell Tower, a small corner tower beside Brydges's own lodgings. Her room was on the first floor, and had a large fireplace with three small windows. Down the passageway from the door were three latrines which hung over the moat. It was not as destitute or uncomfortable as she had feared, but it was still the Tower of London and she was a prisoner. This was the beginning of one of the most trying times of her life.

This talk, illustrated by a PowerPoint, will describe what befell the speaker after one quite remarkable cuneiform tablet was brought for examination to the British Museum in London. The inscription on this four-thousand-year-old tablet led to a series of altogether unexpected discoveries, demanding a whole new look at Noah and his Ark, and culminating in a book and a documentary film.

Synopsis:
Sapna (Karisma Kapoor) has been brought up by her three doting, but eccentric uncles. Uncle no. 1 (Paresh Rawal) is a very religious Hindu, while Uncle. No. 2 (Om Puri) is a former wrestler who is very into fitness and makes Sapna do intense workout routines daily. Uncle no. 3 (Anupam Kher) is into fashion and western music. The uncles all wish for her to marry, but their differences clash, as each of them wants the boy to have the same interests as them. Sapna is tired of dancing to her uncle's tunes all her life and wishes to take a group trip to Europe. However, when she expresses her wishes to her nanny, Mary (Himani Shivpuri), her uncles fire the nanny for giving Sapna such foolish ideas. However, Mary works for another family and tells them of Sapna's plight. She shares Sapna's photo with Raja (Salman Khan). He is pleased with her photo and is determined to make her his bride. Meanwhile, Sapna looks to the last resort and tries to run away, but Uncle no. 3 catches her and volunteers to take her to the airport himself. On her travels through Europe, Raja creates nothing but trouble for her, but circumstances separate them from the rest of the tour group, and Raja saves Sapna's life. They fall in love and wish to marry once they return to India, but Raja must first impress all three of her uncles. Through a series of comic events, Raja wins their hearts. He and Sapna happily marry in the end.

Waddington St Helen Church Clock Chimes, 12 o'clock
The Church Clock chimes of St Helen's Church, Waddington, near Clitheroe, Lancashire, in which the sound pretty similar to the clock chimes of Clitheroe Library, a few mere miles away. The Clock I guess is a Potts of Leeds clock (Clitheroe Library has a Potts of Leeds clock as well, you can see the mechanism in the upper floor) with Westminster Chimes, judging at pictures I've seen before the church was rebuilt in 1900, it did not have a clock before then, the bells are a 7cwt 1972 Taylor Ring of 6 tuned to A. This was once part of Yorkshire, straddling the border of Lancashire at the River Ribble, until 1974, when it and surrounding villages became part of the Ribble Valley District in Lancashire. It's also worth noting that this church is popular for weddings as well, nearly every time I've come here, there has been a wedding on....or maybe just mere coincidence?
