Travelling in New Zealand - Wanganui's Carillion - Part 1
A hidden gem in the middle of rural New Zealand - Wanganui's Carillon that I came across - plays every hour on the hour.
A carillon is a musical instrument that is typically housed in the bell tower (belfry) of a church or municipal building. The instrument consists of at least 23 cast bronze, cup-shaped bells, which are played serially to produce a melody, or sounded together to play a chord

Carillon Marsland Hill New Plymouth NZ - we are sailing
A short burst of we are sailing. The bells are just to the left of the gap in the trees.
If you happen to be on the top of Marsland hill when the Carillon starts playing you're in for a treat. You can enjoy the stunning city and mountain views accompanied by the chiming bells.
The 37 bell carrillon first played in 1971, a memorial to Mabel Kibby from her husband and local entrepreneur George.
Together the brass bells weigh over four tonne. They play daily at 10am, 12noon, 2pm and 4pm.
The carillon is operated electronically, playing 25 tunes from Rod Stewart's We are sailing and Tom Jones' What's New Pussycat? to Yea Banks and Braes and carols in the lead up to Christmas.

Exploring Stratford in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 52: Today we are heading into Stratford in Taranaki to explore the town that calls itself the Shakespeare Town of New Zealand!
Yesterday - Day 51 -
Tomorrow – Day 53 –
About this video:
Today we are continuing our trip around the Taranaki region of New Zealand by checking out the town of Stratford. Stratford is famous for being the Shakespeare town of New Zealand thanks to street names after various characters from Shakespeare, as well as the Stratford Glockenspiel that does a performance four times a day.
First thing we do when we arrive in Stratford in Taranaki is check out the famous Stratford Glockenspiel for ourselves. It does a performance of Romeo and Juliet every day at 10m, 1pm, 3pm and 7pm. You can find the Stratford Glockenspiel right in the centre of Stratford.
After that, we look around a few shops and art galleries then settle in cafe in Stratford called Cafe x.o.x which is super quirky and a great way to stay out of the rain.
Finally, we check in at the Stratford Holiday Park before making our way to some walks around the Patea River including a swing bridge.
So what do you think of Stratford in Taranaki? Let us know in the comments below!

StepUp Taranaki | DANCE CHALLENGE
This is the first choreographed dance video of its kind to be launched to the world.
It's the result of one New Plymouth woman’s dream to bring the region together. Behind it is an amazing story of inspiration, motivation and the joining of cultures.
It was filmed over 18 months using a variety of filming techniques including numerous drone shots. A Huge team of dedicated volunteers all worked on it keen to help their community come together.
It features world first shoots like dancing big rig trucks and dancing oil rig workers along with thousands of locals. Even New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key got involved! Mr. Key and renowned TV showhost Paul Henry starred as Pilots in our StepUp Airways scene.
This project was produced by a charity and made money for other other charities and we at StepUp believe it is a world first.
To top it all off, New Zealand has just been ranked the number one place in the world to live (Legatum Prosperity Index), AND Lonely Planet has just voted Taranaki the 2nd best place in the world to visit.
It's about community building, team work, spirit and pride. Whoever you are, wherever you live you can do this and your area will thrive from such a positive and uplifting project. Everyone loves to dance - we've proved it!

Gisborne Art deco town clock repainted
This week Gisborne said see-you-never to shades of salmon and hello to the new grey colour scheme on the city-centre Robinson Memorial Town Clock. The clock has its first colour change in a decade but its history is much richer than that. The tower is said to have been modelled after a lighthouse and was chosen as the winning design in a competition for a new town clock in the early 1930s. The need for a new tower came after the 1931 Napier earthquake damaged the existing town clock tower on the chief Post Office that stood north of the courthouse on Gladstone Road. Today’s town clock might look a little different from when it was built in 1934 but it incorporates the original turret and chiming mechanism from the Post Office building. Next on the agenda is the installation of LED strip lighting. Owner of painting contractors 1st Class Decorators, Michael Smith, says his team grew up in Gisborne. “They were really interested in doing it. It is such a prestigious thing to get to paint, it is great.”
