A transitional building, the cloisters of La Psalette perfectly illustrate the gradual shift from the Gothic to the Renaissance style. The origin of the name. The cloisters of La Psalette take their name from the psalms sung by the neighbouring music school.
A setting for La Comédie Humaine. In his 19th-century novel Le Curé de Tours, Balzac put Abbot Birotteau in a wing of the cloister, turned into a dwelling. Cathedral cloisters. One can also see, in the cathedral, the tomb of the children of Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany, who died as infants. This tomb, in Carrara marble, made by Girolamo da Fiesole, in the Italian style, and whose recumbent statues are reminiscent of 15th-century French medieval tradition (school of Michel Colombe), was kept since 1506 in Saint-Martin de Tours before being moved in 1834 to Saint-Gatien.

Moissac - Le Cloître de l'Abbatiale
LE CHEMIN DE RONDE. « Le plus beau cloître du monde » selon l'expression heureuse de Pierre Sirgant. Le cloître de l'abbaye Saint-Pierre de Moissac est célèbre pour être le plus ancien cloître historié. Achevé en 1100, il compte parmi les rares à avoir été conservés dans leur intégralité. La diversité et la finesse des sculptures du cloître de Moissac font sa renommée.
Dès qu'on en franchit le seuil, le cloître de Moissac s'impose par le déploiement de ses quatre galeries charpentées dont les arcades retombent sur 116 colonnes de marbre. Rythmé par une alternance de colonnettes simples et doubles où s'épanouissent 76 chapiteaux tous différents, le cloître de Moissac est l'un des plus ancien cloîtres romans conservés encore en place.
Les 76 chapiteaux, sculptés sur quatre faces, véritables chefs-d'oeuvre de la sculpture romane, révèlent une recherche stylistique et un souci de composition esthétique exceptionnels. Les 46 chapiteaux historiés présentent des scènes tirées de la Bible et de l'histoire de l'Église. Ils présentent un riche panorama de la révélation chrétienne et s'offrent comme une Bible ouverte. Les sculpteurs ont été à la fois fidèles et libres face au texte biblique et l'on devine aussi dans leur interprétation l'influence des commentaires des Pères de l'Église.
Les 30 autres chapiteaux, de même facture et où l'on voit l'héritage corinthien, sont purement ornementaux et s'inspirent pour leur décoration de formes animales ou végétales. Dans la spiritualité clunisienne, les mondes végétal et animal font partie de la Création divine et sont appelés à louer le Seigneur. La diversité et la finesse des sculptures du cloître constituent un outil d'étude et d'analyse privilégié de l'univers iconographique et de l'imaginaire religieux du XIe siècle. L'esthétique rencontrée sur les chapiteaux se rapproche de celles des manuscrits et enluminures produites par le scriptorium de l'abbaye.
Le cloître comporte 8 piliers carrés en brique revêtus de plaques de marbre sculptées. Les quatre piliers d'angles représentent sur les côtés face aux galeries des paires d'apôtres : il s'agit du collège apostolique. On y trouve ainsi matérialisée l'idée de Paul : les apôtres sont les colonnes de l'Église. Il s'agit du premier exemple d'emplacement de bas-reliefs représentant les apôtres sur des piliers aux quatre coins d'un cloître. Ils sont les piliers du cloître comme ils sont les piliers de l'Église.
Le pilier placé au milieu de la galerie Est du cloître représente l'abbé Durand de Bredons, premier abbé après le rattachement de Moissac à Cluny en 1048. Sur le pilier médian de la galerie Ouest, une longue inscription rappelle que le cloître a été achevé en 1100, sous l'abbatiat d'Anquistil. Ces plaques de marbres finement sculptées, contemporaines des chapiteaux, viennent compléter l'extraordinaire richesse iconographique de ce cloître unique. Les scènes qui figurent sur les piliers et les chapiteaux sont l'oeuvre d'un atelier que certains historiens disent être le même que celui des sculpteurs de Saint-Sernin de Toulouse. Ce savoir-faire fera référence en matière de sculpture romane méridionale.
Tous les matériaux pour la construction du cloître ont été trouvés sur place, tant la brique que les Moissagais savent fabriquer depuis l'époque gallo-romaine, que la pierre calcaire du Quercy. Les 116 colonnes de marbre qui supportent les chapiteaux ont été récupérées sur des ruines romaines. Le fait qu'elles ne sont pas toutes de la même longueur ni de la même épaisseur, prouve qu'elles ont été réutilisées. Les reliefs des piliers ont été sculptés dans des cuves monolithes de sarcophage récupérés.
Classé pourtant en 1841, le cloître de Moissac devait être démoli en 1856 en raison des travaux de construction de la voie ferrée Bordeaux - Sète ! Fort heureusement, le projet a pu être modifié. Aujourd'hui, les trains, dont le TGV, passent à un mètre seulement des murs du cloître, et traversent l'ancien réfectoire des moines avec des vitesses dépassant 100 km/h. En 1882, on y voyait encore une fresque représentant la Dernière Cène.

Ask any reading group: People disagree about books all the time. But it’s rare for a novel to be quite as polarizing, or as controversial in the wider culture, as Jeanine Cummins’s new book, “American Dirt,” has turned out to be.
Essentially a narcothriller — it’s about a Mexican woman and her son fleeing to the border to escape a murderous drug lord — the book is already a huge hit. Oprah Winfrey recently picked it for her book club, and it enters this week’s best-seller list at No. 1. But it has also been widely condemned, on political grounds by readers who say it resorts to stereotypes and exploits current events to make a fetish out of trauma, and on aesthetic grounds by readers who say it’s just badly written. (That’s where The Times’s critic Parul Sehgal landed in her review.) In the wake of the outcry, the book’s publishers announced on Wednesday that they were canceling a planned author tour.
So why are we recommending it?
For one thing, “American Dirt” is clearly the book of the moment. It has spawned a galvanizing conversation — if not the one that Cummins might have been hoping for — and anybody who wants to follow along would probably do well to read the book at the center of the discourse. For another thing, both Lauren Groff (in the Book Review) and the editor who assigned it to her were genuinely impressed by the book’s propulsive momentum and topical concerns. You might be, too — or you might hate it! Either way, you’ll have something to talk about at your next book group.
