Cloof Wine Estate - Inkspot
During the 2009 Rocking the Daisies Music Festival, wine-hipster Oscar Foulkes of Cloof Wine Estate talks to us about his early musical influences and how they relate to the World's first Vin Noir, produced from this estate in Darling, South Africa. Darling is a unique spot for growing grapes, with its deep clay soils causing the roots of unirrigated vines to burrow to depths of more than 8 metres in search of moisture, leading to wines of inky concentration and unparalleled richness.

Rocking the Daisies on eXpresso
Now with the support of Pick n Pay, the annual Rocking the Daisies festival at the Cloof Wine Estate outside Darling was a feast for all five senses. This is where great music and social conscience meet.
With SA's first wind farm situated near Darling, the organisers tap into green energy to keep the world- class festival rocking, stating green's not a trend, it's a lifestyle.
Food & Trees for Africa is a local social enterprise that helps communities grow food gardens and has planted more than 4 million trees since 1990.
'Upcycle' is THE word to add to your urban dictionary. This concept of giving garbage a second live as part of something functional and beautiful was seen in action at the festival.
Rocking the Daisies has once again won SA Climate Change Leadership Awards for it's positive influence on South African festivals and encouraging young people to maintain a sustainable, enjoyable green lifestyle. Watch rockingthedaisies.com to be a part of this inspired experience in 2012.

Cloof Wine Estate - Duckitt
During the recent Rocking the Daisies Music Festival held on the Cloof Wine Estate, Oscar Foulkes talked to us about their Duckitt Merlot / Cabernet blend. The name of this wine commemorates William Duckitt, who settled in Darling in the early 1800s, and who was the scion of one of the regions most prolific families. Many generations hence Peter Duckitt is the viticulturalist responsible for the vineyards at Cloof and Burghers Post.
FESTIVAL: Rocking The Daisies 2019
This year I was lucky enough to get to experience Rocking The Daisies at the expansive Cloof Wine Estate. Situated just outside the picturesque town of Darling on the West Coast, is Cloof Winery. This desert terrain filled backdrop is the perfect location to hold South Africa's very own Coachella.
This time around it was ALL about the THE VERY SEXY SHIRAZ.
Grown in vineyards that have been described as ‘Shiraz Heaven’, this wine’s luscious fruit was accessorised with French Oak, making a wine so appealing and seductive that it could only be named after the experience one has when drinking it.
Now available in a can, CAN DO! Cloof wines has made festival drinking even easier! You can enjoy the same great taste in a can, without the fuss of a glass bottle and cups.
Tasting Notes
A deep, dark ruby red colour. Intense and complex flavours of white pepper, cloves, cinnamon supported by dark fruit flavours on the nose that follows through on the palate. A full-bodied wine with soft ripe tannins and intense spicy flavours.
Food Pairing
This wine needs the big flavours of brisket, stew, lamb or venison. It might even rich out to a roast duck in plum sauce.

An African Success Story :: Cloof Wine Estate
AN AFRICAN SUCCESS STORY
Most of the Western Cape of South Africa’s wine growing regions are influenced by one of the two mighty oceans which meet at this southernmost tip of Africa: the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. Combine beneficial maritime influences like regular coastal fog and cooling sea breezes with a moderate Mediterranean climate, distinctive and varied topography, and diverse soils, and you have the ideal conditions in which to create wines of unique character and complexity. Coupled to this, a wine making tradition and history dating back over 350 years blends the restrained elegance of the Old World with the accessible fruit-driven styles of the New, making for wines which eloquently express the unique terroir of the Cape. No wonder that this extraordinary wealth of natural assets and tradition should instill South Africa’s wines with a true success story.
The Crown of this success story is the region of Darling. Only an hour’s drive away from Cape Town, it features several tourist attractions and stunning landscapes boasting the widest variety of wildflowers in the world. Darling is a demarcated wine district and home to her own wine route, including five wine cellars all of which benefit from the cool breezes off the Atlantic Ocean and the long, hot summers to produce some stunning wines with concentrated flavour, depth and intensity.
The Jewel in the Crown, is Cloof Wine Estate. Not only is Cloof blessed with a unique terroir, it is also coupled with neighbouring farm, Burgherspost under the same ownership and so boasts a total 4000 Ha combined surface area. Within these 4000 Ha, you will be treated to a stunning winery on the hillside of Groenkloof, complete with a beautiful tasting room and kitchen, boasting an experience not to be forgotten. Along with that is a Game Reserve which plays host to a multitude of varieties of birds and wildlife. And finally, over 240 Ha of Bush vine and Trellised vineyards which set the foundation to a family of International Gold Medal winning wines. Cloof wines are known for their bold, rich flavours with pure and clearly defined fruit characters, thanks to well-crafted nature and some fantastically progressive wine making techniques. It does not stop there…This beautiful wine estate not only has its wine present in over 30 countries around the world, it plays host to Africa’s largest music festival while being one of only 38 wine producers of the 980+ in South Africa, who are Biodiversity Conservation Champions! Much to shout about, much to see and do.

Cloof Cellar Blend
Consisting mainly of press wine -- the last drops pressed from the skins after fermentation -- this blend is concentrated in the extreme. Its texture is thick and dense. Flavours cover the whole spectrum, with the Tinta giving the wine an exotic fruitiness on the mid-palate. The spiciness of French Oak (25% new) lends an an air of sophistication to this off-beat wine. Big, bold and juicy -- a wine to ward off evil spirits or just to enjoy.

Throwback To Rocking The Daisies 2015! (Part I)
Video shot by: Rick Dodgen
Video edited by: Rick Dogen
It has been almost 6 weeks since the Spunky Crew partied at Cloof Wine Estate in Darling, South Africa to celebrate the 10th birthday of one of our most beloved local music festivals. As expected the international line up – which included The Kooks, Milky Chance, The Cat Empire and South Africa’s very own The Rudimentals – sufficiently blew us away with their awesome musical talents. But what we really love about Rocking the Daisies is the way it feels like a nonstop party from beginning to end with a beautifully fun array of random people from random places all dancing and laughing together the whole weekend through.
In between all that dancing, laughing and partying we somehow found the time to hand our main American man (the aboriginal Paul D) a camera, microphone and the simple instruction to ask some international partygoers a few (possibly inappropriate) questions about their Rocking the Daisies experiences.
