Clos Mogador with René Barbier part.3 #005
René Barbier has kissed the priorat, he is undoubtedly considered THE pioneer of this wine region.
He recognized in the 1980´s as one of four winemakers the potential of this wine-growing region and tirelessly turned to the use of the same. René Barbier and his wife Isabelle persistently worked on the quality of their initially small production. Their 20 hectares of vineyards are planted with Garnacha, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon – some of which are very old and provide the great complexity to his wines.
In Gratallops, René Barbier, with his passion for Grenache, does not hesitate to develop a spectacular wine, which soon attracted the attention of Robert Parker and was dubbed the Clos Mogador. This wine, called “Clos Mogador”, will soon become the benchmark of the wines in Priorat (February 11. 2011).

Clos Mogador with René Barbier part.1 #003
Clos Mogador is one of the great wineries in Spain, whose wines are characterized by a very special finesse. Owner of the winery is René Barbier, who fulfilled a long-cherished dream with the purchase of the property. René Barbier’s great breakthrough has turned a barren, mountainous landscape into a world-class winery, which today enjoys fame and recognition. René Barbier is a passionate winemaker who has managed to turn the Clos Mogador winery into a magnificent and productive estate whose wines conquer the French market. Here, Clos Mogador was a winery that lay fallow for a long time. With the former wasteland that René Barbier acquired in the eighties, the winery is no longer comparable. For more than 30 years, the wine connoisseur and successful winemaker René Barbier has combined modern and traditional wine-making methods to create wines that are not available in this form for a second time.
Previously, the vineyards over Tarragona were wild and untamed. Today, the winery Clos Mogador, located in Gratallops, in the Spanish region of Catalonia, radiates tranquility. René Barbier was able to use effectively the slate soils of his domain, which he affectionately called Clos Mogador, by planting rich and noble vines from which he pressed one of the best red wines in Spain. The grape varieties Carignan, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which have an unmistakable flavor, are still in existence today. Surrounded are the vines of olive, almond and fruit trees, which loosen up the scenic appearance. For many years, the vintage on Clos Mogador is done exclusively by hand, before the grapes are processed with a century-old press. In production, René Barbier pays attention to every detail, so that his red wines are characterized by power and refinement. On wine barrels made of stainless steel waived the winemaker entirely. Rather, he resorts to traditional barrels made of either wood or cement. Since René Barbier remembers old traditions, the wines are neither filtered nor pressed in closed containers. The result is red wines that shine with fully ripe and extremely dark fruits. The spicy and complex taste is reminiscent of berries, leather and wild herbs that provide a powerful and long-lasting finish.
You can imagine how crazy I become, when René welcomed me for my first interview. Enjoy (February 4. 2011)

Clos Mogador - 2015 - Priorat
Clos Mogador - 2015 - Priorat tasted 100% blind by the Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
Dark ruby red colour with a purple hue. Youthful and pure nose displaying wild berries blending red and dark fruit with a mild spiciness, floral hints, tobacco and fine oak. The palate combines an excellent freshness with dense and concentrated fruit, finely grained tannin, notes of cocoa, mild spices, fine oak and a very long muscular finish, powerful and broad yet elegant and supple with good drinkability. Great stuff, should develop tremendously but is already darn delicious.

Clos Mogador with René Barbier part.2 #004
In the 1980s, René Barbier awakened the Priorato from his slumber. With incredible efforts, René and Isabel Barbier and their children have managed to produce a small production (starting at 15,000 bottles) of a world class wine. Many titles have already been awarded to René: Founder of the Priorat, Father of the Priorat, Patriarch of the Priorat , Philosopher of the Priorat, etc. For René and Isabel always the nature and originality of the area in the foreground. For this they have been duly honored.
Manyetes is a south-facing vineyard, located 250 meters above sea level. The soil is 100% “Llicorella Slate”, a type of soil on which the vines must fight to survive. In the last ten years, the proportion of Cariñena in the Manyetes Cuvée has been increased. On this soil and with the strong sunshine, the Cariñena vine offers a surprising freshness and round tannins. Only about 7000 bottles are produced by this premium wine every year, which makes it a sought after rarity (February 8. 2011)

Clos Mogador. Manyetes 2005 #100
René and Isabelle Barbier acquired the Clos Mogador winery at the end of the 1970s – an old estate in Grattalops in the Siuran valley, known for its good slate soil. Manyetes is NOT a single vineyard wine, rather it´s a wine from a specific area. René tried to explain in Spanish, that Manyetes is “una zona”.

Clos Mogador - 2013 - Priorat
Clos Mogador - 2013 - Priorat tasted by The Best Sommelier of the World, Andreas Larsson.
Cassis, Blackberry, Minerality
Very youthful appearance here, dark blue, inky core. High colour intensity. There are quite a wealth of aromas there. It starts out showing off a lot of ripeness. It leans in the direction of really black inky fruit such as blackberry, cassis, dark plum, also with some floral notes like violet. There is also a mineral presence, like some hints of earth and crushed rocks. No noticeable oak really. Much more on the emphasis of this ripe and lushes fruit. Very good grip on the palate. Really mouth-filling, very dense, very concentrated. I still find this being a very youthful wine. I must say it is pretty delicious. We still have a presence of tannin and extract, but they are nicely rounded and well embedded in this anxious fruit. What I like here is we really have a high ripeness, inky dark berries, cassis and juicy blackberry. It is all underlined by a very bright acidity and that mineral sensation. Very long finish. Really layered very juicy, very long finish. Persistent with a lot of fine spiciness going on. Excellent balance. Despite this richness and concentration, this is doubtlessly a very youthful wine. I could drink it now but I would probably prefer to keep it for a few more years, as it will gain more complexity, harmony and roundness, within the coming years. Bloody tempting example.

Clos Erasmus. Laurel 2011 #102
Daphne Glorian was one of the founding members of the Priory. Together with Álvaro Palacios (L’Ermita, Finca Dofí), René Barbier (Clos Mogador), José Luis Perez (Clos Martinet) and Carlos Pastrana (Clos de ‘Obac). Daphne began in the late eighties with the reclamation of the Priorat. Her Clos Erasmus quickly gained cult status and was almost unavailable for years, so great was the demand. How big was the contribution of her husband Eric Solomon in the huge success can only be guessed. Eric Solomon is the leading US wine importer for Spanish wine and responsible for sampling the tastings of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate.
Laurel, the little brother of Clos Erasmus, is made exclusively from grapes from the municipality of Gratallops, but, unlike the Clos Erasmus, it ripens predominantly in the fodder. The cuvée for the lusciously-fresh Laurel, which is meticulously as is the case with Erasmus, consists of 70% Garnacha as well as Syrah and Cabernet. Watch a new episode of The Wine Show.
