Cloth Hall - Sukiennice in Krakow
All of Krakow, from its winding medieval streets to its modern blocks and outlying parks, spirals out from one central point, the heart and soul of the city, the Main Market Square, one of the largest and grandest in Europe. And at the very center of this square stands the exquisite Sukiennice, or Cloth Hall, a delicately sculpted structure that was once a major center of international trade and is now a city icon. From the Middle Ages, merchants would gather under the hall's gothic arches to trade local goods like textiles and salt for eastern spices and silks.
Today the Sukiennice is not only one of Krakow's most well-known and beautiful landmarks, but continues as an active market, although no longer in international trade. The wooden stalls lining either side of the ground floor are stacked with local crafts and souvenirs, such as amber jewelry, colourful wood carvings, hand-embroidered blouses, wool slippers and crystal glasses.

Kraków Sukiennice ( Cloth Hall ) Tour - [12.01.2020]
The Kraków Cloth Hall (Polish: Sukiennice, pronounced [sukʲɛˈɲit͡sɛ]) in Lesser Poland, dates to the Renaissance and is one of the city's most recognizable icons. It is the central feature of the main market square in the Kraków Old Town (Historic Centre of Kraków are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978).
It was once a major centre of international trade. Traveling merchants met there to discuss business and to barter. During its golden age in the 15th century, the hall was the source of a variety of exotic imports from the east – spices, silk, leather and wax – while Kraków itself exported textiles, lead, and salt from the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
In the immediate vicinity of the hall, the Great Weigh House and the Small Weigh House existed until the 19th century. Other, similar cloth halls have existed in other Polish as well as other European cities such as in Ypres, Belgium; Braunschweig, and in Leeds, England.
Kraków was Poland's capital city and was among the largest cities in Europe already from before the time of the Renaissance. However, its decline started with the move of the capital to Warsaw at the end of the 16th century. The city's decline was hastened by wars and politics leading to the Partitions of Poland at the end of the 18th century. By the time of the architectural restoration proposed for the cloth hall in 1870 under Austrian rule, much of the historic city center was decrepit. A change in political and economic fortunes for the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria ushered in a revival due to newly established Legislative Assembly or Sejm of the Land. The successful renovation of the Cloth Hall, based on design by Tomasz Pryliński and supervised by Mayor Mikołaj Zyblikiewicz, Sejm Marshal, was one of the most notable achievements of this period.[1]
The hall has hosted many distinguished guests over the centuries and is still used to entertain monarchs and dignitaries, such as Charles, Prince of Wales and Emperor Akihito of Japan, who was welcomed here in 2002. In the past, balls were held here, most notably after Prince Józef Poniatowski had briefly liberated the city from the Austrians in 1809. Aside from its history and cultural value, the hall still is still used as a center of commerce.

Kraków In Your Pocket - Cloth Hall (Sukiennice)
Kraków In Your Pocket editor Garret Van Reed on the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice). Kraków's Rynek is the natural ground zero of the city, and sitting in the middle of it all like a cake with a cherry on it is the Cloth Hall known to natives as the Sukiennice. Its come a long way since the times when it was no more than a line of two walls, their purpose being to shelter traders' carts at night. In the 14th century, as more and more stalls sprang up around it, King Casimir the Great allowed for it to take the form of a huge hall. This was to become the centre of trade for Krakóws merchants, bakers, cloth makers and fishmongers, and technically one of the world's first, if not the first, shopping malls. During the 16th century the hall underwent a renaissance facelift overseen by Jan Maria Padovano, and brilliantly deformed gargoyles were added to the façade. The late 19th century saw many of the outbuildings torn down and it was then that the neo-Gothic colonnades were added the brainchild of Tomasz Pryliński, a student of Jan Matejko. Inside you can now shop for garish souvenirs and local craftwork inside the draughty halls, or by taking high tea, like Lenin and his mistress once did, in the Noworolski café.

Wiki writes about the Krakow Market Square, The main square (Polish: Rynek Główny) of the Old Town of Kraków, Lesser Poland, is the principal urban space located at the center of the city. It dates back to the 13th century, and at roughly 40,000 m2 (430,000 ft2) is one of the largest medieval town squares in Europe...The main square is a rectangular space surrounded by historic townhouses (kamienice), palaces and churches. The center of the square is dominated by the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), rebuilt in 1555 in the Renaissance style, topped by a beautiful attic or Polish parapet decorated with carved masks. On one side of the cloth hall is the Town Hall Tower (Wieża ratuszowa), on the other the 10th century Church of St. Adalbert and 1898 Adam Mickiewicz Monument. Rising above the square are the Gothic towers of St. Mary's Basilica (Kościół Mariacki). Kraków Main Square does not have a town hall, because it has not survived to the present day...
Wiki writes about Krakow, Kraków (Polish pronunciation: [ˈkrakuf] ( listen)) also Cracow, or Krakow (US English /ˈkrækaʊ/, UK English /ˈkrækɒv/) is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River (Polish: Wisła) in the Lesser Poland region, the city dates back to the 7th century.
