Taipei unveils Cloud Gate-themed MRT carriages ahead of inaugural performance
The new Cloud Gate Theater will have its inaugural performance this Friday. Ahead of the event, there was an unveiling of special Taipei MRT carriages decorated with Cloud Gate imagery. Pictures of the Cloud Gate Theater decorate both the door of this carriage as well as the seating area, creating a special feeling inside. These decorative touches are a gift from Taipei to the soon-to-be-opened Cloud Gate Theater in Tamsui.Lin Hwai-minCloud Gate FounderIt will be a new start for us. And actually, the trip to Tamsui isn’t that far. As long as we have the Tamsui line with these specially decorated Cloud Gate carriages, the trip may seem even closer. Cloud Gate founder Lin Hwai-min acted as a sort of tour director, leading VIPs around this carriage and introducing representations of nine classic works by the group. Lin also had a clever response to a recent remark about “fake culture” over the past decade in Taipei, made by Department of Urban Development Commissioner Lin Jou-minLin Hwai-minCloud Gate FounderI’m more interested in culture and don’t clearly understand what is meant by the “cultural and creative (industry).” I’m not able to make any judgment. The specially decorated MRT carriages will operate for a period of four months, making eight trips daily along the Tamsui-Xinyi line. Lin told commuters that besides looking at their phone when riding on the MRT, they could enjoy a few pictures of the Cloud Gate group.
Cloud Gate Moves to Tamsui
Cloud Gate is moving its headquarters from Fuxing North Rd. in Taipei to Tamsui, New Taipei. Today the Taipei City government held a special ceremony to bid farewell to the dance troupe. Lin Hwai-minCloud Gate FounderWe cleared out our office today to move to Tamsui. We have been here for 17 years. Before coming to this office on Fuxing N. Rd., we were based in several small apartments and basements. Our office and rehearsal spaces drifted. After February, everything will be concentrated in Tamsui.In 2003, for the 30th anniversary of Cloud Gate, the city government named Alley 231 “Cloud Gate Alley.” To remember the troupe’s time here, the city will create a new cultural landmark and produce a documentary.

Chinese dance began at the time when Da-Jung created Cloud Gate during the age of Yellow Emperor of early antiquity. The myriad changes of time, it has evoled from early sacrificial ceremonies to minor forms of personal enterainment, and from demonstrating reverence of Heaven to go after ones own will. Dance spans through time, space and national boarders to bring people closer as well as Heaven and Man. While based on Chinese culture, dance in Taiwan has drawn upon the sustenances of the world and developed an intriguing style. This presentation will allow you to see how oriental dancers forth the native as well as the global spirit in a universal language. Please come dance with us.

9. Meinong's paper umbrellas-- a legacy of the Hakka people in the southern County
Kaohsiung
10. Sanyi's wood sculpture-- There is the Sanyi Wood's Sculpture Museum in the west
northern County Miaoli; it showcases the evolution from
Austronesian, Chinese, to modern styles.
11. Taoism Eight Generals-- the Eight-General Dance helps ward off negative energy and
spirit and is popular in local communities
12. the Cloud Gate Dance Theater-- Founded by Hwai-min Lin in 1973, it's Taiwan's first
professional modern dance group
13. the Goddess of the Sea-- Mazu, a local guardian from Fujian Province, China, came
with Taiwanese and Hakka immigrants to the island in
around 16th century.
