Cloudehill Nursery & Gardens - Melbourne's Dandenong Ranges
A must see garden made at the top of Mount Dandenong where a maze of stone walls and jewel like garden rooms are set within woodlands of magnificent and historic, cool climate trees.
Some 20 garden compartments are threaded through glorious 80 year old European beech, magnolias, maples and a collection of fabulous Himalayan tree rhododendrons, all beautifully grown and a testament to the lush, moist soils of the Dandenong Ranges. The garden is highlighted by glorious herbaceous borders which focus on two of the finest Japanese weeping maples to be seen anywhere in the world.

Pirianda Gardens - A garden to visit in Olinda, Melbourne
Pirianda Gardens are located just outside of Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges just outside Melbourne.
The gardens history commences as an orchard in the late 1890s. In the early 1900s it was used foe sheep and cattle and at this time the first plantings of ornamental trees by Thomas Crook.
After this the property was used for horse aggistment and then for growing vegetable crops.
It was in 1959 that the Ansells purchased the property and Pirianda Garden as it is now known came to life. Plants were imported, paths cleared and the gardens took shape.
The Ansells donated the garden to the state of Victoria in 1977 and it now under the management of Parks Victoria.

Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden ( formally the National Rhododendron Garden ) | November
We visited the National Rhododendron Garden in Olinda as part of a drive up to the nearby Dandenong Ranges from our home . ( you can read more about our day trip to the nearby Dandenong Ranges : It was an overcast drizzly day and we were probably a bit late in Spring to see some of the flowering Azaleas and Rhododendrons.
The drive from Montrose through to Olinda is a magnificent one through windy roads lined with tree ferns and towering gums. Once we got to the Rhododendron Garden it was still drizzling so we got out the umbrellas and walked to the front office.
We were told that there were some beautiful Proteas in flower and headed down the path that led to the the Protea Garden. The path is made of bitchumen and nice and wide.
It was a pleasant walk with color everywhere lining the path to the where the proteas were. There were a few different types to see in varying sizes and they were all stunning.
Once we had found the protea garden we headed back up the slight incline to the office where we started. All up we did about 5 km of slow walking.
As we were leaving there were a couple of Parks Victoria rangers checking out a new sign that had been made up. It is being updated as part of a name change to the Gardens. It is now known as the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden ( formally the National Rhododendron Garden )
