Address: Former Church, Union Crescent, Margate, Kent, CT9 1NR
Formally: a Church called UNION CRESCENT
Grade: II
Date Listed: 18 October 2010
English Heritage Building ID: 1394721
History:
Margate, one of the first English seaside resorts, flourished in the C19 as a destination favoured by middle-class Londoners, particularly after the establishment of a regular steamer service from London in 1815 and to a lesser extent after the opening of Margate Sands railway station in 1846. The Kent Congregational Association visited Margate in 1843-4 and felt there was a need for a Congregationalist church in the town but deferred aspirations to build one at that time in order to avoid friction with the other denominations present.
In 1845 a number of members of the Zion Chapel of the Countess of Huntingdon's Connection, located on Victoria Road, left and decided to form a Congregational church which they originally set up in a house on Cecil Street. From here the congregation fitted up the former Bettison's Library on the same street as a chapel but by the late 1850s this was too small and plans were drawn up for a new church on Union Crescent. A drawing of the proposed church was published in The Builder in December 1858. Building started on 23 January 1860 and was completed on 7 September the same year at a cost of £3,400.
The church was originally designed without a gallery but it was decided that one was necessary for the increased attendance during the summer season in this seaside town. It had also originally been planned to include a Sunday school beneath the church but this plan was dropped when the local council withheld consent unless the floor of the church was raised, which would have proved too costly. A Sunday school (now a Union church) on the east side of Pump Lane was eventually built in 1872 probably also designed by Poulton and Woodman (this is not included in the designation). After the church closed it was converted to a gymnastic club and the interior altered. In 2003 it converted for use as a mosque.
William Ford Poulton (1822-1900) and William Henry Woodman (1822-1879) were prolific Mid-Victorian architects who specialised in Nonconformist churches and also designed the Grade II* designated Wokingham Town Hall.

GREAT BRITAIN: CANTERBURY (Kent, England, UK)
GREAT BRITAIN: CANTERBURY (Kent, England, UK)
Canterbury is a historic English cathedral city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated in the heart of the City of Canterbury, a local government district of Kent, England. It lies on the River Stour.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the primate of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion owing to the importance of St Augustine, who served as the apostle to the pagan Kingdom of Kent around the turn of the 7th century. The city's cathedral became a major focus of pilgrimage following the 1170 martyrdom of Thomas Becket, although it had already been a well-trodden pilgrim destination since the murder of St Alphege by the men of King Canute in 1012. A journey of pilgrims to Becket's shrine served as the frame for Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th century classic The Canterbury Tales.
Canterbury is a popular tourist destination: consistently one of the most-visited cities in the United Kingdom, the city's economy is heavily reliant upon tourism. The city has been occupied since Paleolithic times and served as the capital of the Celtic Cantiaci and Jute Kingdom of Kent. Many historical structures fill the area, including a city wall founded in Roman times and rebuilt in the 14th century, the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and a Norman castle, and the oldest extant school in the world, the King's School. Modern additions include the Marlowe Theatre and the St Lawrence Ground, home of the Kent County Cricket Club. There is also a substantial student population, brought about by the presence of the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, the University for the Creative Arts, and the Girne American University Canterbury campus. Canterbury remains, however, a small city in terms of geographical size and population, when compared with other British cities.

RYA 'PUSH THE BOAT OUT' WEEKEND AT MARGATE YACHT CLUB.
May 18th and 19th was RYA Push the Boat Out weekend. On Saturday 6 boats started to sail to West Bay.
Conditions started windy and chilly, dry suits were still out for some and the double handers were reefed down. The wind dropped rapidly, reefs were removed and 5 boats ended up landing at St Mildred's bay for a coffee and snack. Heading back into the rising tide, the wind had dropped completely and the 5 boats were towed back & those in drysuits started to cook in the sun.
Sunday was more favourable with a brisk breeze but lumpy sea, 12 boats made the round trip to Jetski World at Palm Bay.

Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Whatever was your angle
With that visionary shimmer?
A strange thing to roll out a spell
À la mode
[Verse 2]
Tears water the flowers of need
And you bend my day at the knee
Sit down, we'll frame the far side
Shapes live forever, designer
[Verse 3]
I give up on your beauty
Shady as the day you were born
I'm leaving you alone with it
We're going sailing
Designer
[Instrumental Interlude]
[Verse 4]
That visionary shimmer
Do not lose your young eyes
Laughing at good work with your ugly son
Give up your beauty
[Verse 5]
Oh, holy bosses leave me here
I'm diving off that memory
Stop pinning up your lives like wives
Give me your finger
À la mode
Designer
[Outro]
We were à la mode

Places to see in ( Margate - UK )
Margate is a seaside town in the district of Thanet in Kent, England. It lies 38.1 miles east-north-east of Maidstone, on the coast along the North Foreland and contains the areas of Cliftonville, Garlinge, Palm Bay and Westbrook.
For at least 250 years, Margate has been a leading seaside resort in the UK, drawing Londoners to its beaches, Margate Sands. The bathing machines in use at Margate were described in 1805 as four-wheeled carriages, covered with canvas, and having at one end of them an umbrella of the same materials which is let down to the surface of the water, so that the bather descending from the machine by a few steps is concealed from the public view, whereby the most refined female is enabled to enjoy the advantages of the sea with the strictest delicacy.
The Dreamland Amusement Park (featured in The Jolly Boys' Outing extended episode of the television series Only Fools and Horses) is situated in the centre of Margate. It reopened in 2015, having been closed since 2006 following a lengthy campaign by the group Save Dreamland Campaign. The Scenic Railway roller coaster at Dreamland, which opened in 1920, is Grade II* Listed and the second oldest in the world, was severely damaged in a fire on 7 April 2008 but has now been fully restored and reopened to the public in October 2015. Today the Dreamland roller coaster is one of only two early-20th century scenic railways still remaining in the UK; the only other surviving UK scenic railway is in Great Yarmouth and was built in 1932. The Margate roller coaster is an ACE Coaster Classic. Cliftonville, next to Margate, has a classic British Arnold Palmer seaside mini golf course.
There are two notable theatres, the Theatre Royal in Addington Street – the second oldest theatre in the country – and the Tom Thumb Theatre, the second smallest in the country, in addition to the Winter Gardens. The Theatre Royal was built in 1787, burned down in 1829 and was remodelled in 1879 giving Margate more national publicity. The exterior is largely from the 19th century.[15] From 1885 to 1899 actor-manager Sarah Thorne ran a school for acting at the Theatre Royal which is widely regarded as Britain's first formal drama school. Actors who received their initial theatrical training there include Harley Granville-Barker, Evelyn Millard, Louis Calvert, George Thorne, Janet Achurch, Adelaide Neilson and Irene and Violet Vanbrugh, among others. An annual jazz festival takes place on a weekend in June.
Margate Museum in Market Place explores the town's seaside heritage in a range of exhibits and displays, and is now opened at weekends by a team of volunteers. First discovered in 1798, the Margate Caves (also known as the Vortigern Caves) are situated at the bottom of Northdown Road. They are currently closed to the public.
The Shell Grotto, which has walls and roof covered in elaborate decorations of over four million shells covering 2,000 square feet (190 m2) in complex patterns, was rediscovered in 1835, but is of unknown age and origin. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building. There is a 16th-century 2-storey timber-framed Tudor house built on a flint plinth in King Street. Margate's Jubilee Clock Tower was built to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, although not completed until 1889. It had a Time Ball mechanism, mounted on a mast atop the tower, which was raised a few minutes before 1pm each day and dropped at precisely 1pm, thereby allowing residents, visitors and ships to know the exact time. This was, of course, in the days before wireless transmission of time signals.
