Film charting an autumn 'day in the life' of the quiet Australian mining town of Ballarat, Victoria.
Shot beyong housing and foliage of a sunrise; the street is deserted. Silhouette of a church spire. Leaves blow on the ground. A man cycles away from shot. A silhouette of the town's skyline against the faded light. View uphill of a main street, complete with tram tracks. Close-up of two buildings. In the reflection of a shop window can be seen a car driving past. Inside a building, a candle burns. Empty bedsheets blow in the wind. Another shot of the candle, this time at a distance showing it on a tabletop with other items such as a bottle of wine and two eggs. Shot of a wooden attic; daylight seeps in through holes in the wall, and a fire burns. On a leaf-covered ground, leaflets flutter. A shot of deserted buildings with a flag fluttering alongside. Another shot of a flag, this time next to a tent. A clock tower and a tall building are shown, both with flags aloft upon their rooves.
In the early morning light, a man cycles away from shot whilst a woman walks towards camera; meanwhile a haze has been created on the right hand side by a heat source. Close-up of a pavement as two schoolgirls carrying a bag between them walk past. A church building is silhouetted against the rising sun. A man walks past a metal object. He pulls up a blind. His shadow can be seen traversing the metal object. Shot of a train shed; the car in front moves out and the one behind edges forward. A man crosses a desrted street. A shop window says Dining Rooms, and Ballarat Coffee. Rain falls in a pond. Shot of the pond with foliage surrounding it; boat industry buildings stand on the opposite shore.
Shot of an open barn door. Inside is a wooden wagon with Ballarat Berninga written on its rear. A clear office door has Coach Office Cobb & Co. written on it; water runs down the door. A lone tree stands in a field, while a forest can be seen behind. Shot of three more trees in the midst of a field; an isolated farm building can be seen in the distance. A cat pokes its head through lace curtains. it sits on a bedside table beside a bed with its sheets disturbed. A ceramic clock in the shape of a dog ticks; the time is 6.30. Shot pans up from a pile of books to show a china figure (a girl with a pet rabbit and cat) standing on top; pans across to show a gramophone playing beside billowing curtains. Shot of the shop door; it says Ballarat Coffee Palace. A waitress in old-fashioned clothes and headgear talks to two customers.
A tram moves slwoly to the left; cars overtake it; shot pans right to show a male and a female dancer. The tram driver looks through his vehicle's window. As the tram sits beside a lake, he alters the position of its pantograph. Close-up of the female dancer's legs; she wears ballet shoes. Two elderly ladies, one of whom carries flowers, sit in the tram; the conductor stands behind and rings a bell. The driver operates the controls. The tram, with its destination blind denoting Grey St. Sebastl., heads towards the camera. The conductor checks the pasengers' tickets. The tram travels alongside the lake; the trees behind are losing their leaves. Close-up of the word Basllarat on the shop door. Thr ough a glass door, and past a reflection of flowers, can be seen an elderly couple. Close-up of some flowers. The couple point at them. Close-up of a rose. Two ladies walk past. Shot of a large crowd in a flower garden. Amidst one flower bed can be seen a statue.
A jogger jogs to the left of a row of trees. Through the drooping branches of a tree can be seen a rowing crew in action on the lake. As they row towards the camera, the sun glimmers in the waves which their paddles create. Three fishermen stand by the lake; on the far shore are a group of biuldings. Four elderly ladies sit on a bench under a tree. A man can be seen beyond some greenery walking along a road. In the flower garden, a gardener can be seen sweeping leaves whilst others behind admire the flowers. Petals blow on the ground. Two older ladies get up from a bench facing some flowers, and walk along. Close-up of the statue; it is of a young girl in classical pose; behind is a flowerbed. The Australian Gold Rush
This is an educational video for Stage 3 students studying HSIE in NSW schools under the old HSIE BOS NSW Syllabus. This content is still relevant to the national curriculum, under the History K-10 Syllabus. This video introduces events that had a significant impact on shaping Australia and its colonies. Students develop an understanding regarding the evolution of the colonies and early migration to Australia in the 19th century (See ACHHK095 & ACHHK096).
The purpose of this video was to be used in conjunction with an IGASAR (a process model for inquiry) learning sequence as part of a university assessment for unit EDSS223 at the University of New England (UNE), Armidale NSW.
