Great New Zealand River Journies: The Clutha River
An excerpt from a 1991 documentary. Produced by George Andrews, Great New Zealand River Journeys is a three-part series exploring the history and majesty of the Waikato, Wanganui and Clutha rivers. In this episode, Jon Gadsby goes rafting (the cameraman falls in when he gets a little too close to his subject), tries bungy jumping, is shocked by Cromwell's giant fruit, worries about the Clyde Dam, and reveals the reason behind Alexandra's giant clock.

Burton's Creek Reserve, Clyde Dam - Lake Dunstan
Thanks to Contact for permission to fly the Phantom 4 over Lake Dunstan at Burton's Creek during April, 2016.
Even though it was a dreary afternoon, the drone managed to capture a few great shots featuring the inspiring Central Otago autumn colours.

Take a trip down memory lane with this ramble around the Clyde township. Originally called 'The Dunstan', this goldfields town was the hub of mining activity in the 1860's and retains its solid charm from those arduous days of the past.

NZ, Addicted To Dams?
Worldwide, large dams are being superseded by new renewable technologies, but in New Zealand energy planners are wedded to past practices and are still promoting large dams, which have a limited lifespan of 80-100 yrs. In the coming decades many of our aging dams will need to be decommissioned at HUGE cost. Who will pay? Music credit: Matrix montage.
Damning the Clutha Mata-Au
The saga of hydro-dams on the Clutha River. The Roxburgh dam, commissioned in 1956, now has a sediment-filled reservoir. The Clyde dam, commissioned in 1992, was mistakenly built on an active fault-line, and was plagued with serious landslide issues and cost overruns. Music credit: 'Unsuffer Me,' by Lucinda Williams.

New Zealand - The Mighty Molyneux (Clutha River) In_Flood = Dam Spillways
The Mighty Molyneux River.
Better known locally now as:
The Clutha River..
Often floods after heavy rain (especially those associated with severe Thunder Storms as we have had recently)
And thus both the Clyde & Roxburgh Hydro Electric Power Station DAMS ..
Often over-flow as their floods are diverted down their respective Spillways..
Which makes for some spectucalar sights.. as we have shown here..
Especially whenever a MASSIVE thunder storm .. !!!
Is quickly replaced with almost Clear skies.. (and bright sunshine).
For reference values only.!!!
We also went to the Other local dam hereabouts, which itself (35 years ago) was in extreme flood in 1978 (when it took out 300 metres of the adjacent Central Otago Railway NZR Branchline bridge approach embankment/causeway and trackage)..
However..
When the Clutha was in HIGH FLOOD.. (on the 12th & 13th of this month, Jan 2013)..
The Lower Manorburn Dam .. barely had a trickle coming over it's wall.
Oh.. and look ..!!!
Almost clear-sky views - 60 miles away .. to:
The Remakables, near Queenstown.
We call them our Swiss Alps.

Clyde cliff face north of Clyde Dam
The huge Clyde dam, between Alexandria and Cromwell in the South Island of New Zealand, is of huge significance to New Zealand rural life and agriculture. Just as interesting are the rock formations along the river, echoing those of Roxbrough and Alexandria areas. The bird, an Australaisian Crested Grebe, also known as Puteketeke, is endangered in this country due to a small population, modification of lakes for hydropower generation, mammalian predators, and is found only in high country South Island lakes ....

Waitakere Dam, Waitakere ranges regional park
Phillip had two week school holiday in April, we planed to visit Waitakere regional parks again.
Today we visited the Waitakere Dam, there are lots of tracks round this areas, we walked along the dam, and also walked along tramline track, the most interesting part was when we walked through the dark and muddy tunnel. The Dam was very cool, we saw the lake reservoir on one side and a huge drop as the water is released on the other side.
The Background music is played by my son Phillip's own piece
