Places to see in ( Brora - UK )
Brora is a village in the east of Sutherland, in the Highland area of Scotland. The name Brora is derived from ancient Norse, meaning 'river with a bridge. A small industrial village having at one time a coal pit, boat building, salt pans, fish curing, lemonade factory, the new Clynelish Distillery (as well as the old Clynelish distillery which is now called the Brora distillery ), wool mill, bricks and a stone quarry. The white sandstone in the Clynelish quarry belongs to the Brora Formation, of the Callovian and Oxfordian stages (formerly Middle Oolite) of the Mid-Late Jurassic. Stone from the quarry was used in the construction of London Bridge, Liverpool Cathedral and Dunrobin Castle.
When in operation, the coalmine was the most northerly coalmine in the UK. Brora was the first place in the north of Scotland to have electricity thanks to its wool industry. This distinction gave rise to the local nickname of Electric City at the time. Brora also houses a baronial style clock tower which is a war memorial.
The village is situated where the A9 road and the Far North Line bridge the River Brora. The village is served by a railway station. Buses operate about every two hours Mondays-Saturdays and infrequently on Sundays from Brora to Golspie, Dornoch, Tain and Inverness in the south and Helmsdale, Berriedale, Dunbeath, Halkirk, Thurso and Scrabster in the north. These are on route X99 and are operated by Stagecoach in the Highlands.
An education is available for primary school children in Brora Primary School in Johnstone Place. The building was formerly Brora High School, that included the primary department. Although the school opened in 1962, the secondary department closed in 1985. Includes a playgroup, nursery and Primaries 1 to 7. Pupils are taken by school transportation to the near by Golspie High School.

UK: SCOTLAND: WHISKY UNDERGOING DRAMATIC IMAGE CHANGE
English/Nat
Scottish Whisky, long associated with tweed jackets and hip flasks, is undergoing a dramatic image change.
In the trendiest bars in Europe, it is now considered among the most chic of drinks.
With the festive season upon us, Scottish distilleries are working overtime to meet the growing export demand.
A-P-T-V visited the Glengoyne Distillery to see how the whisky is distilled.
At the Glengoyne Distillery in the southern Highlands of Scotland, staff are working overtime to meet the demands for Christmas spirit.
Eighty-five percent of Glengoyne's sales are in export, a figure that's increasing as drinkers in America, Europe and Asia turn to traditional single malts.
Whisky sales in the U-K had been falling, with the traditional Scotch tipple suffering something of an image problem.
Ten years ago, it seemed whisky drinking was for hip-flask-toting gentlemen in tweed jackets.
But that has all changed.
Not only have sales of single malts grown by almost 60 per cent, they have also shaken off their old-fashioned image.
Whisky is now THE chic drink in southern and eastern Europe, with Spain providing the third biggest overseas market after the U-S and France.
Export now makes up 85 per cent of all Scotch whisky sales, with annual export earnings exceeding 2.2 (b) billion pounds (exceeding three and a half (b) billion U-S dollars).

In some markets it is very trendy. I'm thinking of markets like Spain for example where we promote very vigorously to the younger drinker in a variety of ways. We promote in cinemas for example, I don't just mean cinema advertising, but Spain, France, Italy, they are markets where Scotch whisky is regarded as a prestige product, an aspirational product and where young people in particular want to buy into it.

And Scotland's distilleries are bracing themselves for further rises in sales among the lucrative younger end of the market with some malts now becoming as fashionable as flavoured vodkas and bottled beers.

There is great opportunity for new markets to develop overseas. In terms of Scotch whisky generally, we see growth in China, we see growth coming in India, we see growth coming in Eastern Europe. Those are going to be blended markets to start with. But they're going to also be experiencing malt whisky, as indeed are places like South America, Brazil. There's increasing interest in malt whisky in Brazil and other parts so there's a lot of growth yet to come.

And the Scotch Whisky Association has a word of advice for newcomers to whisky drinking.

They are there to be sipped savoured and enjoyed they are not there to be thrown down the throat. If it has sat in the cask for ten years or more you need to spend a few seconds or even a few minutes putting it on the tongue, tasting it and enjoying it over time.

Visitors to Edinburgh's Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre agree that single malt drinking is fast becoming one of their favourite hobbies.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It's some kind of, you say, trend in Sweden now to drink whisky and to drink quality, good whisky.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
It is the best. I think the whisky is from Scotland, that's why. It is the original.

Dating back so long. Clans having their own whiskies and whatever I think it's probably quite trendy to be seen to drink it.

New Bottles as of 6-4-11
So as promised, I was able to get a video up of my newest additions. The highlight of this video is the extremely rare British Royal Navy Imperial Rum. The Royal Navy had been issuing out a daily ration of rum to its sailors for over 300 years. On July 31st, 1970 they ceased all rum onboard their ships (known as Black Tot Day). The remaining stock sat in underground warehouses in Jamaica under the supervision of the British Government and only served at Royal weddings and very special military functions. Finally in 1989 Mark Andrews (of Castle Brands) acquired the remaining stock of 650 wicker-covered ceramic demijohns and by 1993, all of them were sold. It is the 2nd rarest rum of all time!
As of 8-11-2012, my current bottle count stands at 888 total bottles. I have 540 different ones on the bar & another 348 in back stock. I'm a Certified Specialist of Spirits and I've been actively researching & collecting for the last 18 years. What started as a small basic bar has transformed (with the help & understanding of my wonderful wife) into what I think is a pretty nice collection. Thank you for looking and sharing in my hobby.
Cheers!

A truly magical day in The Highlands of Scotland
Driving around the Scotland Highlands, United Kingdom
Saturday, August 19th 2017 - Started out the afternoon Dornoch, Scotland and drove to the Dalmore Distillery in Alness via route A9. Proceeded to back north on A9 to the Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain. Continued up A9 north to check out the Clynelish Distillery in Brora. Unfortunately the distillery wasn't open for tours when we arrived, but we drove around anyway. Decided to head to the Fall of Shin via A9 back towards Inverness, made a right onto A839 towards Lairg. Made a couple wrong turns, did some touristy stuff at the Falls before taking A949 back to Dornoch.
