Llanidloes is a town on the A470 and B4518 roads in Powys, within the historic county boundaries of Montgomeryshire, Wales. It is the first town on the River Severn (Welsh: Afon Hafren), counting from the source. The town is close to the large dam and reservoir Llyn Clywedog. There is a scenic mountain road connecting Machynlleth and Llanidloes.
Llanidloes is popular with hikers who walk on the scenic footpaths surrounding the town, including Glyndŵr's Way, which in conjunction with the Offa's Dyke path forms a 160-mile circuit around Mid Wales and local passage over the spine of the Cambrian Mountains. The Sarn Sabrina Walk – a 25-mile circular walk from Llanidloes to the source of the Severn and back – has been held yearly on the Saturday preceding the Late Spring Bank Holiday since 2006. In 2007 the Semi Sabrina, a 12-mile circular walk, was added. The Hafren Forest is also used for car rallies such as Rally GB and motorcycle Enduro events throughout the year.
Llanidloes takes its name from the early 7th century Celtic Saint Idloes (Llan-Idloes = the Parish of St Idloes), after whom its parish church is named. It was then part of the cantref of Arwystli. In 1280 Llanidloes received a market charter from the King (granted to Owen de la Pole) and the benefit of Edwardian town planning and earthwork defences. The present-day street plan follows the 13th century grid layout. O'Neill traced earth bank defences from the confluence of the Severn with the Clywedog and along Brook Street on the north, beyond High Street on the east, and along Mount Street on the south; with the Severn forming the western boundary. He suggested that the medieval castle with its bailey lay immediately to the south in the area of Mount Street.
Llanidloes railway station was opened in 1864 by the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway. Designed as a grand junction station, it was to connect the Mid-Wales Railway and the Manchester and Milford Railway in the south, with Newtown and the Oswestry and Newtown Railway to the north. Designed to hold the railway company's offices, the building is in the Georgian style. The Llanidloes and Newtown railway eventually formed part of the Cambrian Railways, linking it with South Wales. The station closed for passengers on 31 December 1962. The Llanidloes by-pass road runs along a section of the former railway, and the station still stands beside this road. It is now restored and occupied by small businesses.
Llanidloes has a reputation as a very quirky town, known for its liberal, counterculture atmosphere. Llanidloes is known as a popular home for ageing hippies. The alternative atmosphere is apparent, with a wholefood shop, a volunteer-run organic shop and a vegetarian wholefood café. In 2014, it was rated one of the most attractive postcode areas to live in Wales.

Clywedog Dam Nr LLanidloes
Short video showing th Clywedog Dam
Llyn Clywedog dam
The construction of the dam and lake throw up a number of interesting statistics. The structure is the tallest mass concrete dam in Britain, standing fully 236 ft (72m) high. It is 750 ft long, and holds back some 11,000 million gallons of water. This apparently equates to some 550 million baths, or 264 billion glasses of water. The weight of concrete used in the construction of the dam is equal to 7 times the tonnage of the QE2 cruise liner, in all some 200,000 cubic metres; enough to build 28 miles of six lane motorway.
Clywedog Dam and Bryntail Mine
While we were at Red Kite Touring Park we took a short drive up to Clywedog Dam and Bryntail Lead Mine in the valley below the dam. It was one of the first days we were in Wales and were starting to realize the beauty of the countryside.

From Rhayader Climbing up to the Welsh Desert
A ride from Rhayader up to the Welsh Desert
The video starts 2-3 miles from Rhayader and covers the ascent up the side of a valley to the summit before descending t the top of the Craig Goch Reservoir (Elan Valley)
From Wikipedia: There is no exact definition of the extent of the Desert of Wales, but it is bordered to the east by the A470 and the town of Rhayader, to the south by the A483 from Builth Wells to Llanwrda, to the west by the A482 from Llanwrda to Pumpsaint, and from there northwards by a series of country roads up to Tregaron. The northern boundary is generally taken to be the A44 between Ponterwyd and Llangurig, although the substantial area of moorland to the north of this road, including the reservoirs of Nant y Moch and Llyn Clywedog, has similar topography.

Llanidloes | Destination. Community. Home.
Llanidloes, a small market town in Powys, Mid Wales, is our favourite place to live. It is the first town on the River Severn, and often referred to as “a small town at the heart of Wales.”
As a destination Llanidloes offers visitors and locals alike the opportunity to dip into a rich history, to explore some beautiful surrounding countryside, and to join in a vibrant social and cultural life.
As a community Llanidloes thrives, a combination of fiercely loyal locals and incomers, most of whom will fight to the bitter end for what they believe is right for their beloved town.
And as our home - which Llanidloes has been now for almost 30 years and counting - it provides the permanent backdrop for all the highs and lows of life’s many adventures.
As the Llanidloes town website says on its home page: “be warned, the place is dangerously addictive! You may never want to leave!”
The video footage was filmed between October 2018 - February 2019. As well as the town of Llanidloes itself it features the Llyn Clywedog reservoir, Hafren Forest, and the hills above the River Severn near Llandinam - all just a short distance from Llanidloes.

Plynlimon 2015 - A Year On The Mountain
On 1st January 2015 I set myself a project: film the changing seasons at the top of Plynlimon, a lovely mountain in the Cambrian range in mid-Wales.
I started with a wobbly plastic mini tripod on the top of the trig point, intending to do a 360 degree panoramic sweep once a month for the whole year.
I ended with about the biggest tripod Gitzo will sell you, with a heavy-weight pan and tilt head, and a motorised pan action- it is so windy on top of Plynlimon it was the only way to get really stable footage!
And in the process my little 360 panorama once a month somehow turned into a visual poem.
So if you've got 20 minutes to spare and want to relax... sit down, turn up the volume, chill out and enjoy!
